There's some really pedantic testers. "Had to remove items from drivers view" on every years pass. "Trims fitted, wheel studs not checked" too. Yet that doesn't appear on every car with wheeltrims, so why would they put effort in to mention it on one or two?

Possibly the bit about removing items from drivers view is an attempt to stop you pinching the tools pikey style from the test station? Dunno about the trimz though..

Lol!

Excellent resource, just checking through some MK5 Fiestas on Ebay to see what they're failed on regularly and unsurprisingly its rust. Shame there's no Irish version of this site as my Fiesta has already had its rear arches replaced and one is starting to go again.

Haha a mate of mine who is a bit of a gobshite and bullshitboy has just got a bmw X5.

Posted it up on some car Facebook pages and some are saying its a fake. Clearly they are the ones who are annoyed that their supposedly mint car is a death trap!

I was hoping on keeping this new *insider knowledge well away from FB pages for good reason

Thunderbird 2, the XM estate apparently failed in 2009 long fefore I bought it because

Ermm it hasn't got shock absorbers unless that refers to a failed sphere? Either that or the owner had it MOTed at Quickfuk

  • Reason(s) for failure
  •

Nearside Front Shock absorber has negligible damping effect (2.7.5)

Offside Front Brake hose excessively deteriorated (3.6.B.4d)

What a dick, id be straight back causing a massive fuss if that was me! Tbh my tester started to get worried when the xm spat a damper releif hose off and wet itself, I just put it back on, we worked out thay it wasnt an oil leak because it was lhm and now not leaking, and carried on trying to make it pass the emissions (on the 3rd try it squeaked through)...

Offside Front Brake pipe excessively corroded (3.6.B.2c)
Offside Front Suspension arm has excessive play in a pin/bush (2.4.G.2)
Service brake: efficiency below requirements (3.7.B.7)

That's quite bad for a 5 year old van, rotten brake pipes! Its recent MOT history isn't so bad.

My 1300 failed a few times on rust before I got it.

The 1850HL constantly has problems with brakes and exhausts apparently.

The 1500HL isn't on the system.

The Civic is as problem free as one would expect.

My old Yaris is faultless, I had the only failed MOT because the headlight adjustment was too high...

My old Corsa has yet to have an MOT as it's too new.

The black Princess 1800 I should have bought for £800 trucked along happily until it was SORN'd in 2014, the Acclaim I should have bought for £600 is still trucking along happily with no real MOT problems...

I'm surprised (and genuinely pleased) to see that my old '89 Master T35D is still batting, with ticket until next June :-D

I thought we had a candidate for a haircut in my dad's old company car 307, Y605UJU, one of the first in the UK and a recall magnet at the time. Yep, it's still going and well over 200000 miles on it....

Mine is 8 (4mot) and 'my man' has failed it twice, separate years, for Rear Numberplate Lamp.

He always hands me the PASS - and taps the rear bumper to get the bulb on :)

Do these guys have failure stats to achieve??

The Bentley had an advisory for general corrosion underneath. But.... sob.

My Merc SL that i had to sell fast cos I was skint had been 'leniently' tested for a few years while I owned it and boy, did the next owner get a shocker of a fail! Lots of suspension components, emissions, lights, all bloody sorts.

Still, he got it cheap....

+ Feeling guilty, runs and hides in shame :(

It's called Pass, rectified at station or PRS. This lets you fix minor problems while the test is still logged on but generates a fail and a pass on the system to show what was done.

Posted

My Focus used to need a tap to the numberplate light every year - checked the history and it's needed it for the two years since too :)

Are PRS the ones that have the same mileage on the fail as on the pass?

Posted

^ Yeah, same date and time too with identical advisories.

Example -

  • Test date 20 August 2013
  • Test Result Fail
  • Odometer reading 55,180 miles
  • MOT test number 5174 0253 3264
  • Reason(s) for failure
Offside Registration plate lamp not working (1.1.C.1d)
  • Advisory notice item(s)
    front compliance bushes perishing slightly
  • Test date 20 August 2013
  • Expiry date 19 August 2014
  • Test Result Pass
  • Odometer reading 55,180 miles
  • MOT test number 5282 6243 3236
  • Advisory notice item(s)
    front compliance bushes perishing slightly

Aye, that's what's been happening to my ex-Focus.

Amusingly since I sold it to a WBAC-type place for a pittance and saw it marked up £2000 on their website, it sat around for 6 months and then instantly failed the next MOT on front suspension, but they used to advertise a warranty on every sale (plus finance at 34.5%). I don't think they earned as much on that car as they thought they might once both the DMF and DPF had been sorted out.

Posted

I was told that it's important to go through the prs procedure because it's how vosa get the stats/ evidence to argue against 2 yearly testing

Just catching up with this.

I bought a mk1 Mazda MX-5 from a dodgy dealer as an impulse purchase in 2013. It had no (visible) rust on it... but as it would turn out, lots of filler. When I bought it it had a fresh, clean MOT from the dealer's mate.

A few months into my ownership rust started to appear from nowhere, so I took it to a specialist for some welding. I loved that car and thought it'd be worth getting sorted. I then had a horrible phone call along the lines of "it's like a patchwork quilt underneath here, there's nothing for us to weld to."

I quickly bunged it on eBay with an honest description and sold it to a guy who wanted a cheap MX-5 for track days. Anyway, he MOTed it a few months later and this was the result...

Reason(s) for failure

Front Windscreen washer provides insufficient washer liquid (8.2.3)

Offside Front Headlamp not working on dipped beam (1.7.5a)

Offside Front Headlamp not working on main beam (1.7.5a)

Nearside Rear rear parking brake recording little or no effort (3.7.B.6a)

Advisory notice item(s)

odd stickers on screen

slight bodywork damage to n/s/r

bodywork has surface rust in places

both front sils to floor areas getting rusty and weak

car has been patched and welded in places

general oil leaks around engine area

Under-trays fitted obscuring some underside components

ext. system getting rusty in places

first ext. mounting bracket missing

fuel filter rusting

general wear and surface rust on discs

slight damage to chassies

underside of car has surface rust in places

n/s/f a/r/bar drop link bushes wearing

surface rust on parts of susp.

Amazing how quickly a car can go downhill

It's also interesting that my E34 has been MOTed since I sold it (with HGF). The guy told me he was exporting it to Poland. This was the result...

Reason(s) for failure

Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content at idle excessive (7.3.D.4)

Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive (7.3.D.3)

Exhaust emissions hydrocarbon content after 2nd fast idle excessive (7.3.D.3)

Centre Front Exhaust system not adequately supported (7.1.1)

Offside Front Direction indicator incorrect colour (1.4.A.2f)

Nearside Front Direction indicator incorrect colour (1.4.A.2f)

Offside Rear Direction indicator incorrect colour (1.4.A.2f)

Nearside Rear Direction indicator incorrect colour (1.4.A.2f)

Supplementary Restraint System warning lamp indicates a fault (5.4.2)

Advisory notice item(s)

Fuel pipe/s corroded

Not every car I sell is shagged  :?

LOL! I'm watching the S2000 episode right now, these things must take more than 2 months to go from filming to being on TV yet the car failed at the end of August on loads of really simple stuff like lamps and washers.
