Just booked a hire car for our 11 days in spain next month...... £23.03 !!!!!  It says Fiat 500 or similar.... so taking bets on what is similar to a Fiat 500 because I have no interest or knowledge of modern cars.... A small Spanish prezzie bought while on holiday will be sent to the winner on my return or burnt and the video uploaded if preferred.....

I win if I actually do get the Fiat.....

Is that £23.03 per day or in total? The exclamation marks imply an amazing price hence my question.

Anyway I reckon a silver Corsa with no hubcaps.

Edited to add: I didn't see Bren's post ,but if it's a tie he can have the sombrero for the first half of the year.

That sounds cheap, I bet it's "Goldcar" They shaft you on the juice, well assuming you don't use a full tank. Usually in the hire car game you pay a dipper for your fuel and then bring it back full for a return of your deposit. Goldcar you pay for all the fuel then bring it back empty. I guess they make up all their cash on most peeps bringing it back half full or in out case 3/4! I did have everything on air con and ragging the tits off it to use more fuel on the way back to the airport but the needle never moved. Twats.

After we booked an 'Astra or similar' in the south of France last year and got a Renner Grand Scenic that some poor schmuck had driven down the night before from Picardie (if the plate was to be believed) I reckon that you'll get a Seat Alhambra diesel because 'thats all they have left'

That's the total...Its through Argus but the company is "dickmanns" which is worrying... you pay for a tank but its unlimited mileage and having been a trade plater in a former life I am the past master of using every last drop of petrol .... although it says they will refund unused fuel...

My brother works for Gold Car in Ibiza, they love him as he speaks English as well as fluent Spanish (SiL is Ibizian). The amount of money he makes for the firm from screwing over holiday makers who are desperate not to miss a flight is huge.

He tells a good 'un about an older bloke who returns a car and casually says "no need to inspect it, I don't want my deposit back". Bro goes out to have a mooch at the car to find out it's been sandwiched and needs every single panel bar the roof replacing. €500 euro well spent

French hire companies register their cars in departemente 60 because it's somehow cheaper.  I know not how.

I'd be disappointed if I was supplied with anything other than a late 1980s Fiat Panda with several dangerous defects and an odometer that has stopped counting. Especially if a Corsa was given as a substitute.

Every time I hire in Spain it ends up costing way more than expected, last couple of times more than double.

Be very careful!

I did similar, although the last 40 miles were with the fuel light on! But as soon as I got within pushing distance of the airport, only then did I dare start flogging it. Left the AC, HRW etc on for as long as possible when unloading too. Wouldn't have minded so much but the amount they charged for the tank of fuel beforehand was half as much again as the stated tank capacity!

Each department sets its own rate of tax for car registrations. Its only a few Euros difference on an average car but when you have literally thousands of cars to register, its worthwhile.

I hired a fiat 500 or similar in Spain and actually got a 500. Gutless, especially with the aircon on but surprisingly good off road

I always go for the 'economy' MPV version which ALWAYS ends up being a diesel Berlingo.

And always always ALWAYS go for the 'return full' fuel policy - if you let them fill it up, it'll cost you an extra 30% on top of the normal price of fuel, and on the rare occasions that they refund for unused fuel, it will be minus an 'administration' charge.

And get your collision damage waiver insurance from elsewhere - usually around about £7 will cover the exorbitant excesses they'd want to charge you, but that they will very kindly offer you insurance for only £4 a day!!!!!!!!! that protects you against the excess.

Yeah, you can buy insurance to insure you against insurance excess. This world rules.

you want to hope it's not a red corsa, because it is a very poor car, judging from the povo spec on I've had for the last three days

Why don't you buy a car and drive it home?

Because I value my Gentlemen's vegetables.... and apparently 3 cars is all I need !!!

White 2009 Berlingo. Wheel trims missing, panels bent, electrics partially absent. Whenever I've hired anything in Spain...I've got this shitheap

They will try a strong sale on extra insurance and demand a big deposit if you don't cough up on the insurance.  I always pay the deposit and always get it back. Missing wheel trims is normal.

Return it early because it can take hours to hand back the car and take the minibus to the airport

£950 deposit and already have insurance to get it back...... cheers for the return tip I do like to get to the airport early I will report back on the total cost.......

Closest but no cigar. I got a black Citroen C3 Diesel. Steel wheels and no hubcaps or aerial or remote and damage to every panel which I documented on the form provided and he jokingly said "is that all" and wrote 25 on the form  . 17,000 kms on the clock. Amazingly it had good aircon and cruise which held 160 on the way back for the plane . On a private road I found ..., drove really nicely although not really quickly and swallowed Mrs Ds "holiday purchases" and our suitcases all hidden away under the rear parcel shelf.

As long as I get my fuel deposit back the total cost will have been under £50 for the 11 days.... Finally we were a little late getting back to drop the car back (see above) but time from driving into the compound to walking into the airport was less than 15 minutes. Its a little early to be delighted as it could all still go *tits up but so far so good.

Final report will follow when all is completed.

Early 1980's Opel Corsa. That's what I travelled in the back of the last time I was in a hire car on Spanish shores, and it was nearly new. Quite a few Citroen Meharis kicking around as well iirc.
