I recall seeing the article in either Practical or Popular Classics about Nick Larkin saving this car and concluding that it was "one very sick wedge". So it's wonderful to see this car undergo an epic restoration. The picture of Harris Mann signing the bonnet is quite amazing too.

I think ' against all odds' is totally applicable to this car.

This resto continues to astound me. Wowsers. I assume the vinyl roof in the early photos was an add-on and won't be reappearing? Looks good with the roof as is, although I'm not totally convinced about the sunroof! Was that original?

The sunroof was fitted in the late '70s and is a genuine Unipart accessory roof, so it's legit and it's staying, and we just don't want the unnecessary hassle of more welding and expense of rectifying that big hole in the roof which would never look right.

Absolutely incredible. A credit to you and the magic welder chap.

How much does he charge?

I've really enjoyed this thread, I love it when restorations are done on the basket cases, this and Dacia Pick Up restoration make me keep coming back to this site. I am really tempted to go to the NEC to see this in the flesh. Well done guys, if you want a Marina to do next, mine could do with a little work  8)

We will try to get an N plate for it as we have evidence it's a 1974 build. But that can wait for now. We sourced the panels from far and wide and we were damn lucky we managed to get them all in such a short space of time, and we really did think we were stuffed with the A pillars.

Here's a pic of the flash Denovo wheel trims and new chrome wheel nuts on it; we can't find a nice set of hubcaps but these look so cool we're glad we had them

If you were that way inclined just transfer an older N plate onto it. And agreed those trims are just class.

I'm not sure about the reg, that YJO 71R registration is a Cowley plate, and part of its history. I know it's a 77 R reg, but it seems a shame to change it for some random issue after all these years.

This is turning out great - you must have some cracking contacts to get all them panels!

I'd also 100% want to keep the original plate, why change it?

I agree, keep the original plate, it's a good talking point and part of it's history.

This thing is fantastic. I like how it's gone from being probably one of the worst examples left right back up to one of the very best. Great stuff.

Wish I'd known you were after a good set of hubcaps, I had some on my watch list on eBay which sold very recently, they weren't even mega expensive but a long way down my list.  Would've worked nicely.  That said, the Denovo trims do look excellent, a fitting trim counterpoint to the Morris grille.

+13496849586 on keeping YJO71R. It's the only registration number it's ever had, and a vital part of the cars' history. Anybody who knows about these cars (especially the Morris with the snouty front end) will know an 18/22 should be on an N or possibly P plate.

Are you driving the car up to the NEC or trailering it?

Is 74 not tax exempt now??

Yes. Just got my Capri over onto 'Historic vehicle'.

I think it was this April 74 became eligible. 75 will be by April next year.

Just read this from the start.. absolutely magnificent effort. Look forward to seeing this at the NEC.
