Budget hot hatch

Recommended Posts

I need to scratch a hot hatch itch ! Doesn't need to be very fast just pointy and fun ( a kind of anti Saab if you like )

I've got a budget of 500 but don't mind something disposable for less .

Short list so far

306 gti

206 gti

Puma 1.7

Alfa 147

Fester Zetec s

Any more suggestions ( no golf mk3 or 4's)

I struggle with the pedals on saxos tbh but a 106 gti could tempt me even though they are the same

205.

The 1.6 auto is much quicker than you'd think, especially the later ones with SPI on the XU5 lump.   Plenty of little old lady cars around with low miles too.

Alfa 147?

Fiat Seciento Schumacher edition?

I think a 306 gti6 is your best bet there amazing handlers, fast enough and still pretty cheap. Everyone raves about them.

The 206 is a bit soft even the 180, Pumas are ace, the fiesta is a great motor just a tad slow. I wouldn't bother with the 147 they was never that quick.

I had a 145 cloverleaf many moons back and that was ace. A bit hard to find now days. I also recently had a st170 they are dirt cheap and I was proper impressed with it, they are always dismissed as being a bit slow but I thought it had enough poke to be fun.

A zr160 would be a good you might as well do it proper and not bother with the 105 1.4 etc.

Soz if I sounded a bit piston heads there, but hot hatches are my mastermind choice of subject.

I liked the st170 , thought it had a good balance of power and handling but didn't think they would be anywhere near my price range

I think you'd struggle to get a 106 gti for 500sovs, 205 xs is a cracking car

How about a BMW 318ti...

It has a hatch plus it's nippy with a 140bhp twin cam M44 plus you've got the added bonus of rear wheel drive..

There's a gold 106 GTi for sale near me, 110k on it, it's had a respray which looks lovely apart from the roof which seems to have been missed and looks horrible with bad lacquer and they haven't removed any trim, just masked stuff so it's a good 6 foot car.  £1100 asking price in the window seems optimistic even though it looks pretty original (paintwork blowover aside).

I was going to suggest a Focus ST170 but I have been beaten to it. What about an Astra SRi or coupe.

Rover Streetwise ... It could be yours for £7, do you feel lucky ;)

Alternately there's the 220 or 25 versions of the Rover that are well liked around here and can be found rather cheap.

I asked "The Sun" and this is what they told me to buy if I want a hot hatch.

A mid-range Fiesta, a 60bhp pushrod Fabia and a diesel Golf (SDi?) are my options. HTH.

I would also go for the volcane. I had the diesel version and it was a lovely car and quite quick. Or how about a xsara vts (if you can find one) or an almera gti?

Focus ST170. Handle nice, big boot, go like fuck, under a grand and when you're sick of it someone will pay you 90%  of the purchase price to stick the motor in their mk2 escort.

SportKa ! They're far, far more capable cars than their image would have you think. Slower than a 106GTi in a straight line, but they can certainly keep up with one in the twisty bits and are far easier to drive fast !

Blow me didn't realise ST170's were so cheap.

Should I fill an old barn and then use them as my pension in 30 years!!

Another vote for the MG ZR  :-)

I would say Metro GTi,but they're starting to get expensive now.

I quite liked the other halfs 206 gti, seemed pretty quick and didn't omg break every ten minutes like you would be led to believe. Good handling and rides really well unlike most hot hatches. Put 90k on ours with minimal bother.
