I had to look that up, apparently Peugeot designed the chassis first and fitted the body around it... Don't all car makers do that?

 

They were rightfully proud of their cars' "roadhandling" at that time, they are lovely to drive. The 405 saloon probably has the best ride, handling and steering feel balance of any car I've driven.

Capri i had used to jam on the starter, i'd put it in first and rock it backwards, then in reverse and rock it forwards.

It worked for me........but your not me.......and thats not a capri........

Have you checked the relay under the dash.

When my before last before last 405 did this, it was that so-called double relay #240107.

They call it a fuel pump relay, but that's very misleading. It really switches electrickery to all of the ECUs and wiring harnesses.

The 405 diesel has a mechanical fuel pump, no relays here.

 

Hope you get it sorted, I would give the starter a whack if you're still stranded.

I tried knocking the starter and rocking it on the starter.  Much to the amusement of the missus.

 

Then the Pineapple Express electricity delivery van arrived.

Cant knock the AA.  Thats twice this week I've had them out for trivial things, at rush hour, and they've been at the car within 40 mins both times. 4 Stars!!

Why were they testing a dead battery?

It wasnt fully dead. There was plenty of volts to run the radio, lights, heater all at the same time, but it wouldnt turn the starter.

 

I'm guessing he tested the battery to see if it was fucked or just flat?

 

I dunno man?

 

I couldnt find any batteries suitable for the car for less that £80 online.  I'm not complaining about paying, I'm happy he had one to be honest.  We had a weeks worth of shopping melting in the boot.

 

 

Much better result than starter or alternator.

They have indeed done the usual dodge of drop testing a flat battery. The AA used to jump start the car then test for alt output and let you go on with some advice but it's much more lucrative to charge 150% rrp and fit one at the roadside.

Why didn't you just bump start it? XUDs are pretty easy to bump start - just ease the clutch up gently in second. I may have done this on more than one occasion - once on my own! That was quite hard work. And scary, as a BX has no brakes until the engine is running.

1) Because I'm recovering from knee surgery and trying to bump start a 405 estate by myself on the flat would probably have seen me in the back of an ambulance rather than laughing about all the money I'd cleverly saved and rubbing my hands together.

 

2) couldn't be arsed.

The clutch is exhibiting similar symptoms to the 305 and 306 I have had in the past.  It pulls fine and doesnt slip, but there a judder on pulling away (even at moderate revs, and worse in reverse) and the pedal travel is short and stiff. 

Pug clutches seem to go like this for some reason so its something to address in the future but absolutely fine to enjoy as is for the time being.
