Pppppppick up a pug and pppputting it back down again

I have been getting twitchy since getting rid of the 405 and buying the Saab. Yes it is a capable car and is pretty quick but it lacks a certain rustic charm.

So after being given my car allowance with the promise of no nagging (yeah right) I set out hunting for something interesting and less than £100.

Gumtree, eBay and fb all abused during the day yesterday with little luck (although a seat Ibiza 1.4 for £100 did lead to emails). Then I remembered the free 205 on here.

Bingo!
PM dashed off to Mr Cox, then sat there pressing F5 until can haz reply. He replied in the affirmative that it still existed in car format and was available for the princely sum of zero. Truly one of life's gentlemen.

Plan of attack was to ask my mate in Brighton if he could collect it and stash it at my mums in Uxbridge. Texts exchanged but bumhats he couldn't do if for a couple of weeks.

Next up was my brother who owes me a few favours. He was willing and able right up to the point his son was taken to hospital on Monday. Sadly this seemed more important* than collecting prime piece of semi working chod.

Bugger. Not one to be defeated I took Bucketeers advice and looked on blablacar for cheap lifts. Nothing doing so on to megabus. Result!

Preston to London is £10. Add in the trains and it is Accrington to Preston £7 and London to Brighton £8.

Double checked with Missus Moog that she hadn't changed her mind about it being my* money it was on.

Texts and phone call exchanged. Saturday agreed for collectioning.

Ignition modules ordered (both types £25 each but can return one) and k seal to be bought (£ 8).

Car has tax, insurance allows me to drive any car 3rd party and AA card already paid for.

So far so under budget. Leaves me £40 for fuel which I think should be enough. Will have to take sandwiches to avoid splashing out on megabucks train foods.

Is it wrong to be excited already?

Especially when I have told people and got withering looks and in one case some angry arguments as to why I will die in the process.

This sounds like Pppppick up a Pug win to me!!

I think probably not. One of three things will happen

1) car proceeds and I have a long boring drive home

2) car doesn't proceed and I have a long AA passenger journey home

3) car proceeds then doesn't proceed see 2)

sounds like a good trip planned:)

one thing though-you know that "drive any car 3rd party" only works if the car is insured by someone else?

Only if that is a condition of the policy. I have had some that said that, my current one doesn't have that clause.

So called Adrian Flux to transfer the van insurance over to the pug cost - £1500.

WTF!

In fairness, the premium is probably only 84p. The rest is admin fees.

Admin fees because the commission is so low on the ludicrously cheap premium & they

"have to make our money somehow but at least this way our charging structure is fair and transparent"

Fuck off.

I'd be wary of that third party clause as the car will not be on mid. I'd check that with your insurer given you'll technically be the keeper at the point you get the v5.

That's why most tat shufflers on here use day insure or have trade insurance. It's just not worth 6 points and a big fine.

Agreed, just go onto DayInsure and get some cover - £30 tops I reckon. Better than the points and the fine, especially if you get PC Jobsworth pull you.

Adrian Flux in stupid twatty insurance quote for a car worth next to nothing 'shock' !!

Been there, done that, told them to FRO.

Checked with insurance and I am covered as long as it isn't specifically excluded. They recommended taking a copy of insurance certificate with me. If I was to buy the car then I wouldn't be covered.

I am just going to be borrowing the car for the next couple of months. It needs a VIC which is being abolished at beginning of October so we cant change keepers until then (well unless cough up £42). Once back to chez Moog it will be parked up until we can sort that.

Insurance looks to be a bit of a challenge. Current company wont add to Saab insurance (they wanted £1300 for new policy) and best confused quote is £430 with limit of 5000 miles a year. If I use my old address which is a mile away it drops to £210 (must have moved to the ghetto of Accrington)

EDIT:  Just checked it is showing up as untaxed back to 1st April. this may be a challenge, as green slip V5 is present but also it is showing a VIC marker.   Anyone know if I can tax the car using the green slip even if it has got a VIC? Also will it mean a fine for PO because no tax?

Untaxed, not showing on MID as insured, how long a drive back? Seriously, your life is not worth the hassle of extricating yourself from that. Big problem is if you're driving the uninsured car, but, say, stop and get out of it - it's uninsured again.

You can tax with green slip online  BUT it may be kicked out if there is no MID insurance showing or other anomaly . You can try it beforehand and see if it gets accepted but not go through to the payment if you ave the reference number from the green slip.

I wouldn't drive it back untaxed as it wouldnt be worth it, fine plus car would be seized not worth the hassle.

Insurance I am more comfortable with. i looked into the DOC before and as long as it is all one journey then you are covered. I am not parking car up anywhere so wont be an issue. At very most will be petrol station.

I can't remember which forum I was on, think it was 300C. Someone got nabbed for exactly this situation, and they ended up with months of hassle arguing the toss - and the paperwork - with the police. I've been done for this myself when a trader didn't have insurance and my "drive any car" policy did have the clause in the small print, but not on the certificate. 6 points and bad luck being seen on a 2 mile test drive and mistaken for a local drug dealer (black Capri, long hair).

If someone went back to me then and said "This will happen. Pay £25 or 30 now and it won't" I would bite their bloody hand off.

Another (potential) problem is if the green slip is relatively old, it will only have 11 digits, not twelve, so on-line tax won't work. I do happen to know though that if you use '8' as the first digit it will accept it, presumably it assumes you're the registered keeper on the V5. Just make sure you send the V5 off for the day before you taxed it, then the previous owner won't get a refund and you have an untaxed car on your hands.

I don't think the seize the vehicle if it's not taxed (unless the DVLA are present at road side) what happens is you get reported, then dry bummed by Swansea at a later stage.

..but just in case I'll have 3, 14 and 21 in the lottery draw to pay your fine. If I win I want it signing and framing.

I'm pretty sure you can't tax a car that needs a vic check anyway.

Once upon a time, a non MOTd car had to be moved a long way. It had a twin, belonging to the new owner, that was MOTd/taxed/etc. but otherwise not in use.

Four screws later, and the car was magically on the way home.

Not that I would suggest there is ANY sense in doing that, on the offchance you knew someone or had a very similar road-legal car...

Haha that's just been tried a couple of weeks ago with the only difference being the colour and through 5 country's and 900 miles as well.

Well Gary chased up DVLA and apparently car was sorned way back in April. I guess old owner must have done it.

To get tax it will need new log book applying for which in turn will need VIC.

Which is a whole world of grief so its over before I start better I found out now rather than being pulled over and fined.

Anyone want to a one way ticket from Preston to London on Saturday?

Just book an MOT 300 miles away.

Would be 5pm on a Saturday so MOT test is unlikely to be available.

I think we have managed to find the least desirable car.

And it isn't even a Rover.

It is MOT'd is it not?

Get the ref no off the green slip and try to tax it online as per cavcraft, go direct debit, they don't take the first payment for 14 days so you can drive home smugly with your confirmation email then cancel it when you get back having not paid a penny.

For insurance try Footman James, they'll take anything over 20 years old as a classic and you'll be looking at £100-150 fully comp.
