Bug Jam 29

I used to do Bug Jam every year. Camp, lark around with mates, eat scabby value burgers, drink scabby value lager, go to bed when it starts getting light. Somewhere along the way I grew up, and stopped going as often. Two years ago was a bit of a nightmare, it was packed and badly organised and the weather was toss so last year, day visit only.

This year, we were back to full-blown camping but with the bonus that if you know a racer, they'll sell you cheap tickets and you can get in on the Thursday. Only problem is that this was organised AFTER I'd set up work on the Friday, so I had to leave work in Hemel on Thursday, meet the family at Santa Pod, put the tent up, avoid drinking too much with friends, arrange to leave the site 6.45am Friday and go to work. It does mean we bagsied a nice camping spot though.

There was some interesting stuff that I did take some pictures of. Behold.

What is this? I DON'T EVEN. Ran mediocre times but looked cool doing it.

P7190380.JPG

A little electric car driven by Johnny Smith off of Fifth Gear. Doing respectable times in the 11s.

P7190372.JPG

A larger electric car belonging to people not off of the tellybox. Doing world record times for doorslammer electric cars, hit a 9.34 this weekend. Fun fact: This car used to belong to my ex (although it had a 1600cc dinojuice engine, was more green, probably the same height, and not as fast. I'm told the only panel that remains from then is the roof)

P7190379.JPG

Two litre Pinto, apparently. Not massive quick but went OK. Glittery

P7190360.JPG

My friend's 2236cc 21-window Samba, which broke into the 16s yesterday but was roomy enough to carry 9 people plus their pizzas back to the pits.

P7190350.JPG

To get something this big and mostly metal to do that takes a fair old bit of grunt I'd imagine. And probably a babywipe or two for the drivers seat.

P7180169.JPG

Reiger Kitted Corrado looking like 1997-onwards was just a bad dream

P7180298.JPG

R32 Jetta that sounds fricken' awesome.

P7180247.JPG

Santa Pod's most trusty of steeds, the Nissan Gluebird.

P7180172.JPG

They'd invited some BTCC driver and his car along to do exhibition runs. Here he is about to get DESTROYED by a Mk1 Scirocco - a good 4 seconds between them over the line, with the Scirocco running 10s. BTCC Boy managed to get it into the 12s by the end of the weekend but it's clear the setup differences between roundy-roundy racing and straight-line stuff.

Also, because I'm a massive fucking windup merchant I'm going to post pictures of the Rust and Rat show on Autoshite and watch you all just collapse into a massive black hole of hate :D

I was keeping my stomach contents intact until I saw the Audi 100s....Never mind.

That little yeller thing is an Enfield Electric made on the Pile of Shite in the 70s.

Superior Motor Home probably rocks a Chrysler Hemi, think they were Dodge based....

I know we give dubbers some shit on here but you have to give them something for being consistent and loving what they do.

But someone is going to have to explain to me why they're all lowered though I just don't get it. Same with the fake rust. Real patina can look amazing but fake looks exactly that.

Thanks for this Pillock, I 'liked' all the posts since it's a nicely written report about something happening, which is increasingly becoming a bit of a rarity on here. I feel as if I've experienced some of the show too, sat on my sofa thousands of miles away. Of course, I don't like everything I see there but I'll admit that I find the yellow rusty T2 quite appealing, especially with its less-is-more mods of a bit of lowering and not overly offensive wheels. The tractor-wheeled Beetle was a bit of fun in a Mad Max way but I'm assuming it drove home on normal wheels. Again, something novel to look at, which is what these one make shows have to be about, as it'd be pretty dull seeing the same car times x. I did a hearty LOL at the washing machine drum on the roof of the Beetle though, even if they do make bloody good braziers.

The very first square/blocky thing is a Toyota/Scion bB. One of those weird non-EU models.

I shouldn't really like that but I sort of do. It looks so nicely ill proportioned height wise. Like how they used to draw cars in Viz magazine, tiny wheels and massive high windows

Bet that bug with the tractor wheels on is fun to drive

Your mate 2.3 t2?

Was that the old Akcidentto bus?

Yeah, Abi bought it from Dan but it's not raced since 2008 or something, just needed a new step welded in for MOT and it's back out.

Why do the septics (and their fanboys elsewhere in the world) do that utterly mongish thing with the bouncing suspension?

If vehicles with frazzled ECUs could belm, that's what they'd do.

Some good pics of early VAGs there, especially the more sympathetically-modded ones... did you see any actual pineapples?

Posted

Bouncing suspension is "just because". The same reason we get a lob on over correct logos on number plates and the right coloured sun visors. The cars are usually massively over engineered so no issues with being dangerous.... Just harmless showing off.

The lowrider thing started with cruising, you would go out for a drive with about 12 of your mates in the car which would naturally lower it.   Then that lowered look became popular which then progressed to lowering the car as far as possible on hydraulics.   Then it was realized that with a bit more power in the system you could get the car to hop.

As Pillock says it's just fashion, no more odd than some of the Allegro love on here for example.

He is, y'know - he really is...

Quite like a lot there, the R32 Jetta, the yellowy orange and rust bus, and the tastefully done Audis.

Have always thought about getting something tastefully done and not overly wanked up never to make it through another MOT, but I'd make a complete hash of it and become the person who I don't want to be, so I haven't.

The Sharan looks like it was legitmately dragged out the Channel though...

Missed it this year - knees still recovering from surgery, so walking around for a few hours is out for now. Some great stuff there, and the drag racing is excellent.

I do like a nice bit of patina, but natural, not made.

I got the idea [from a film, prapps?] that up/down ride height is.. as said.. a 'low' thing >> but up/down was to razz the fuzz who might ticket the (effnik) driver for 'headlight height' violation.

Sound feasible.. ??

Odd???

I saw an aerial view of the site and it was completely rammed.....amazing really and good to know messing with cars is alive and kicking even if it is not always to everybody's taste... As a reformed VW addict I enjoyed the pics :)

Hydraulics don't lower a car.  Historically speaking they were called 'lifts' when first introduced in the '60s.

Any pictures of the Irn Bru Bug racing or otherwise?

Surprising only one - there was a massive turnout for VWDRC and my proper camera died Sunday morning before the heats.

Thank you. I hope you don't mind me sharing with the owner ;)

Only if you apologise from me for not getting anything better. Next time I'll make a point of getting decent pictures if I know they're appreciated!
