Shite soft tops

Recommended Posts

Thus nice weather makes me want a soft top. I'm thinking Saab 900 or 9-3 but other makes would also do. Anyone enjoying theirs at the moment? Go on, make me jealous! Bonus points the cheaper the car was...

I bought a 2001 MX5 back at the start of summer with 6 months' test and a new mohair roof for £580... :-)

1978 Lancia Beta Spyder ... £900 a couple of winters ago, probably the cheapest and scruffiest road legal Beta around.

MGF all they way. Ace cars for peanuts.

MGF was great, Saab 9-3 is different but I can't choose a favourite. If I was driving far and wanting to cruise, Swede. If I wanted to "go for a drive", MG every time.

I've got this at the moment, from this very forum; in fact the poor thing is becoming an Autoshite bike!

Top down at even the slightest opportunity, natch, even at 6am going to work.

Of course for maximum Shite points you want to be where I was ten years ago...

1990 Chrysler leBaron 3.0V6 convertible.  I actually miss this one.

If you don't need to carry passengers, MX5 or MGF is good, or if you can stretch the budget...

I got a call last May about this Midget from a mate who was tipped off about it sitting in a garden over the other side of the city. Turns out it was for sale by an old chap who had had it years, he started restoring it a few years back but age and other things caught up and he was never going to get it finished he said.

Like any self respecting shite enthusiast, I hopped in the car and went for a gander at it one evening. To cut a rather boring story short within the hour I was handing the old chap four crisp 50 notes and loading it onto the flat bed, headed for home.

We got home that evening and parked it right outside the house and I was well chuffed with it. Summer was only around the corner and I had bagged this absolute belter on the cheap, it needed feck all and my girlfriend was gonna be happy cos' it was a convertible

Now all I had to do was find an engine and 'box for it..

Yeah, that was part of the deal. There was no engine or box, the old chap had sent them off to be reconditioned and the chap supposedly doing this reconditioning had sold them and gone to ground. To cut yet another long story short, I ended up having to buy this, because after searching every corner of the country, nobody wanted to sell me Midget running gear.

Totally faaaaacked but I got it for a few crates of beer!

(Which was a total shame because this was a 1 owner car with service history, bill of sale, logbook etc)

Out with the engine! (which wasn't even seized)

And into the car that same evening!

And after about a full month (including a week in Spain and Portugal cycling a stage of the Camino, I should add. I won't bore you with the holiday snaps though) here she is, on a day out at the sea

Total cost? About 600 quid and a few crates of beer (and I got 100 quid for what was left of the Dolly!)

And here she is a few months ago, still going strong :)

All real sports cars are convertible and pop up.

One of these would be shite enough for me, preferably a 4wd automatic. The spoiler would go though.

I really quite like the Mk1 Punto convertible, and I used to laugh at my auntie's one when I was a kid.

If only it were still around :(

You did well there. Nice car for £600. I bet it would go for a lot more now.

With the bonnet resprayed it would be practically mint. The shell itself is like new in terms of rust/ originality. One of my better purchases alright

No self-respecting 'shite convertible' thread is complete without one of these...
