A question about Sciroccos

I'm finding these more and more appealing, while going off volkswagens in general

Posted

Also they aren't as cheap as they used to be so not snapping this one up for £250 would be foolish

Posted

£250  and you can have my blue Baleno !!  In fact 200 squid will seal a deal !  I have a Scirocco door mirror if anyone wants one.. red..and a grill ..red.

Ah ha, I have a bench seat back and squab which would be suitable, Christine - you and I could have something going here

"With each issue you can begin to assemble you're very own Scirocco mk2, Each week get a new part, so you can assemble you're very own unloved slice of 80s VW automotive action. Part one is just £2.99, and comes with one wing mirror. 23,098 issues. normal price £13.97 + broken x-box"

Beat this then ...I have a Karmann b post plastic badge .!! .Must be worth a fiver !  I had 5 Sciroccos..inc a GTi and a Storm .And a Caddy Sport ..  I reckon the 1600gt carb was the best , not the fastest , just a sweet engine that loved to rev . Long stroke 1800 didn't like being thrashed .

I have a set of Scirocco side rubbing strips, fuse box cover and front number plate holder, so that's issues 4 to 6 sorted too.

Posted

Fucking hell that numberplate holder is often missing..that's rare !! As are the proper fog lights . I also have numerous burnt out dash dimmer switches, common fault ..why i keep hold of them, is beyond me  . Useful tip.. pulling the relay plate and twisting it one way then the other till  it goes "crack" , fixes a lot of golf scirocco electrical gremlins  . VW garage told me this ... and it works !!

Unfortunately, the previous buyer was messing him round so it's now sat in front of my garage.

I've had it idling for about 30 minutes and everything runs fine, fan kicks in etc, 80s radio works, heaters fire a ton of leaves and bits x forever. The boot IS huge!

It's somehow missing the rear bench (it might be lingering somewhere), I gave it a quick t-cut and it looks nice, apart from the bonnet which has weird white dots (primer underneath) which will need respraying with 10 quid rattle can. The brakes don't work - I have new cylinders and shoes for the back, and I'll change them and the oil/filter tomorrow. It's very tidy overall, I've always had a raging soft on for these, but never enough to go out and buy one, but 250 has to be worth it?

As such I'm going offer it on here for the same before I MOT it (I reckon it will be OK with a day's work).

Posted

That's very cheap, I don't know if there's a north/south price divide but down here you'd be looking at a easy £1500 with a mot.

Posted

Can we get a pic of the engine bay?

We can then confirm if it's an injection or a carb.

Whereabouts are you?

Posted

...its easily worth the 250; in parts at the very least if its an injection model - if its injection its has the 'coveted' 100mm drive shafts which is what the mk1 golf lads search out for fitting Passat/mk4 golf 02A/02J gearboxes (cable change) for engine conversions to mk1 golfs...

I did a p/ex against some welding work, in ex-change for a GTX sirocco that was on UK plates - the car did all of 38 thousand miles with full UK VW service history, before coming over here, never re'regd n shoved in a roofless half built garage here for 2 years before I got it; I think the chap who 'imported it' paid £2500 for it.... I scooped it up just for the shafts, for a future mk1 TDi project; as they are very hard got here (got quoted £300 for a pair of salvage shafts from UK) them shafts- the body had some rear quarter arch rust from sittin about over here - anyways I broke it; everything bar the shell (less the floor which made good pan cuts for mk1 golfs), we sold - bar the engine box , full loom, n petrol tank n Stainless exhaust  which we kept destined for my brothers mk1 golf cabriolet (both are karmann built n share the same floorpan - different from a 'regular' mk1 golf).... sciroccos are very niche in terms of popularity here - only a handful of enthuastiasts, so I 'job lotted' a lot of the parts - a non cracked dash, as this one had, in black seemed 'fought over'  (I offered it/gave it away for free) - screen n tinted glass, were sold quickly, as were the doors n even the GTX factory moulded kit went to a guy intending on putting it on a mk1 Scirocco, shamelessly...

...I still have the lower hella spots, n rust free bonnet from the car - thinking of putting the square hella spots on my Disco on a bulbar I got given....

worth keeping yr scirocco - a friend of mine; also a vw mk1 'nut' calls them 'perfect pigs' for breaking - gut them n you sell everything from them to the mk1 golf contingent... so numbers of good ones are shrinking...

The Hella fog lights?

Mk1 Scirocco is the same as a mk3 Escort RS1600i. When I wanted NOS for my RSi, I bagged em from an American eBay shop.

Clear out your PM's please chap, forum says you cant receive "any more".

My time to shine.

As people have said it won't be worth much. £500-1k with MOT, 2k if it's low mileage.

I think the price discrepancy betwixt it and a golf of similar vintage is down to original buyers. Golf gti's were what a lot of people remember as their first sporty car. Scirocco's were more touring motors for the older gent with spare cash. People get nostalgic about Golfs.

At £250 I doubt you'd lose money on it, and if you don't want it, PM me the details and I'll pass it to the SciroccoRegister Forum. They're very active, friendly and provide loads of advice.

As cars, the ones being produced in the late 80s and early 90s can't be compared the Calibras and Celicas of comparable age. Compare the Corrado.

Mk2 Sciroccos are based on the mk1 Golf A1 platform, designed in the 60s, produced from the 70s. VW never really improved the mechanicals, just reskinned them and updated the look. The engines are basic, but strong and will do 200k+ happily with no rebuilds. Oil change intervals are 6,000 miles. Gearboxes will do similar. Clutches are strong and can last 100k. Drivetrains are tough. A 1.6 won't be quick, but they're economical for their age (expect 40+ MPG), and with the right gearbox will happily keep up with motorway traffic. My 1.8 with a caddy gearbox cruises at 3k RPM at 80.

The clutch mechanism has a small hole coming through the bulkhead, with a weak mount. These can pull through, so look for signs of damage around the cable site. The 1.8 injections are much quicker, and much more sought-after.

Brakes aren't great so now, but weren't bad for the 80s. VW designed it for LHD, and couldn't fit the actuator into the tight space on the right hand side, so there's a complicated linkage to activate the master cylinder on the left hand side. As such the feel is a bit doughy. Fronts are discs, rears drums.

Driving position is low and sporty, as fits the shape. Seats are comfy, even for long distances. Bolsters wear and collapse. Look for damage to the drivers side bolster by the door. The dashboard decays and cracks if it sees the sun, telltale signs are cracks around the screen demister vents.

Rust - not a huge amount TBH. Check the sills. Check the drivers rear wheel arch. The fuel filler neck runs through the arch and acts as a grot trap. Filler necks then rust through and drop rust into the fuel tank which leads to all sorts of running problems. Doors can drop, but just need shims. Boot doors leak water when the seals deteriorate. Windscreens can leak as the seals deteriorate and drip water onto the fusebox. None of these are difficult fixes.

Suspension is tough, but is more set for comfort than sport from factory. Spend £150 on a set of strut braces and the car becomes instantly chuckable.

Essentially, they're cheap to buy, relatively economical, simple to repair, cheap to tax and insure, and quite fun to drive.

My bold - mine did this, and I got home with a set of mole grips on the bulkhead. Which were still there 4 months later when I sold it.

additionally, the good Doctors post highlights for me why this forum is so great. You aren't going to get such depth of impartial advice on a specialist in many places - Nice one, Doc

p.s. - am I right in thinking I am currently 617th in line to have it at £250?

Jesus, I'll throw my name in the ring for £250, wherever down the line I am! I've always liked these.

Dark photos from last night, the grille is in the boot.

Bear in mind if you want it, you'll have to get it towed/trailered, it's a car that's been in the garage since 2002, I'm not making excuses for things I may have missed in the 2 minutes I spent looking over it. :)

Sciroccos were (are) good cars. Far less rot prone than a Golf, and both were based on the Mark 1 floorpan. I had two or three including a Y reg 1.5CL. They drove well and the 1.5 carb engine was quite lively plus there drive just like a Golf. Nothing amazing but perfectly pleasant and very useable. The only weak points were the oil strainer gauze clogging up (1 hour to remove the sump, clean and sump and gauze and refit) plus that bastard Pierburg 2BE carburettor. The Mark 2 was built by VW and not Karmann, so they don't tend to rot badly.

For £250 you cannot go wrong.

I had a Mars red GTX as well back in 1990, C183KHD. That was a tremendous thing.

I think that the mk 2 was built by Karmannn as well.

Volkswagen Scirocco I 1974–1981 504,153

Volkswagen Scirocco II 1981–1992 291,497

Productions figures at Karmann from Wiki.

Numbers are down for the mk2

Did VW build some of them as well?

Posted

From memory, the mk1 was Karmann designed.

Karmann designed a mk2 prototype, penned by Giugaro himself, but VW decided to keep it in house and make a boxier bigger car. They chucked the Karmann designs.

I think they used multiple factories for the mk2, but I may be wrong.

Also: that missing hole in your dash would have probably been for a VDO oil pressure gauge.

Weird isnt it, Id rather have a Scirocco than a Golf ( Id rather have my todger bitten by a horsefly than have a Golf) yes I had always assumed people thought the same as me and they would be megabucks.

I might have to have a look on the bay of e....

Again, can we get an underbonnet (ooo-er) shot.

The carbs have an airbox on the drivers side, the injections have injector lines and airbox on the passenger side.

If it's injection I'm keen, as this would be the exact model I've been looking for. I've already got a red carbed Scala, so another would be *madness.

Get on it, or have a look on the RegisterForum. Good ones change hands for between 1k-2k, and one needing work will be £250-500.

This is tatty but solid with MOT for £700 http://sciroccoregister.co.uk/carforum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=18712

I've always liked the rear spoiler raised away from the glass on these. I remember the ads in What Car, with arrows showing where the air went (because we didn't understand aerodynamics and wind tunnel testing in the 80s) and something about how it kept the rear glass clean. Or something. Although having just typed that I'm having doubts now, maybe it was the Ford Escort mk3 with it's awkward (for it's time) rear styling. Off to google search that one...

Bingo!

Proof, if proof be need be, that I completely wasted my teenage years. Funny how I can't remember where I put my phone charger last night but I can remember this from 30 years ago. Sigh.
