It's rapid!

 

It feels reasonably quick compared with the last one, it does pull to the left and the axle compensator seems to lock up the rear brakes when braking. It also needs some welding.

Apart from that it's reasonably solid everywhere else, I think a bit of welding, brakes, a few bulbs and a cv gaiter should see it back on the road.

Engine bay looks a bit grotty/filthy but I think after jet washing it, it will be ok.

Woo, C15!

 

Roughly how long did that drive in the Audi take? Any overnight stops?

 

I'd like to do that sometime soon.

 

It took 9.5 hours from Ullapool up to Durness, along the top to Thurso then back home via Inverness. The previous day we drove from Dunfermline to Ullapool in around 5 hours then stayed over at a motel in the middle of nowhere.

The whole journey could have been done in a day but was probably more enjoyable spreading it over the two days.

I did Applecross a couple of years ago across a couple of days too, I'm not sure which trip I preferred to be honest. Single track roads are a novelty at first but having to stop every 5 minutes becomes a bit tedious...

Where do 307's rust and how badly?

Thanks again to Foad for the use of his workshop. Mine had gone at the rear sills quite badly as the idiot previous owner had covered them with glass fibre including the drain holes so they sat filled with water.

Ooh, yours has correctly sized tyres. 

And was cheaper than mine. 

And is/was less rusty. 

 

And has side trims.

What did they make these things out of?  They seem to rust more spectacularly than an 80s Lada left by the coast...

 

Having said that, they were probably cheap old vans and were only really built with the intention of a 10 year or so lifespan...Plus I can't help that I still think of anything on an 04 plate as being pretty new.

I don't really have any major plans for it other than getting it running and driving well and in for an mot. I might paint it a different colour and there's a very small chance I'll get around to fitting a turbo diesel engine I have here but as the dw8 engine seems to run so well I'll probably not bother unless something catastrophic happens.

Someone gave me a set of Berlingo steels, I've fitted the fronts and I'll do the rears tomorrow. The petrol 305 is in for an mot tomorrow so I'm looking forward to see how that goes.

I replaced the front plate and did all the welding I think it needed, it starts, stops and handles well and everything electrical works so I'm thinking it will probably pass.

The photo quality from my phone is poor but I did a lot of welding on the c15 today. I started off by chopping out all of the rust, I then made an inner sill section and seam welded that all the way along, after that I made an outer section which I joined from the top onto the lower part of the new sill. It looked a bit odd so I cut a long strip of metal and welded it on to make it look like it did originally.

I painted a really rubbish looking tidemark for the moment but will likely paint the van all one colour in the near future.

Any suggestions?

It looks like it's rapid because it's so light from it rusting away!

I think it would look quite nice in lime green, definitely a light colour but DO NOT paint the black plastic bits as it would just look naff.

 

Amazed as always with the rapid progress on the FOAD fleet.

Agreed, plastic bits should be left as they are and a lovely vibrant hue would look ace

Just leave it as-is. All it needs is text on the side reading "FOAD TOFU* DELIVERY"

 

*Or whatever the Scottish equivalent of tofu is.

Congratulations.

 

I would like to try a 305 before the prices sky rocket so please give me a nudge and a wink if it is to leave you in the future.

So... Not much has been happening here lately, the petrol 305 went straight into daily use and has been pretty good with no issues. The Mazda pickup and Lada sold.

The W123 has developed a misfire, it dies/bogs down at lower revs but seems to rev fine when planting the foot, it's long overdue a service but I think I'll probably have to change the plugs, leads, distributor etc.

The gold 305's brakes are dragging even after fitting new calipers and flexi pipes, I'm going to try bleeding it at the weekend.

 

The C15 I'm no further on with but it's just a case of changing some bulbs and fitting a new cv gaiter which were fails on the previous mot. The previous keeper text me recently to say she has a roof rack for it that I can have so going to pick that up soon.

 

I spotted my old Proton Jumbuck on ebay in Glasgow, I had visions of getting it back, welding it and getting it roadworthy but...

It's pretty well fucked now so either going to break it and maybe keep the engine for my other Proton or just scrap it and hope I can break even.
