Coprolalia Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Plenty of chod left in Devon and Wales. Tons of mk1 Focuses and old german stuff. Saxos are left but they're all 02 plate stuff that look rough as a badgers arse. Don't see K11 Micras anymore.Escorts.Mk1 KaFiat Bravo
theorganist Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 There seem to be loads of turn of the millennium cars around here. Megane mark 1's in both normal and scenic form seem to be particularly prevalent. I am quite taken with the early Megane's I think they are a really nice shape. Pug 106's (later ones) and Saxo's are quite common, Focus's too. Astra's I see quite regularly. Mondeo's are certainly on the wain and mark 1 Corsa's don't seem to be common. Not sure about Japanese cars as I never take much notice. There are plenty of Rover's to be seen still probably due to being close to Longbridge.
Vin Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Plodding up and down the M62/M18/M180 most days for the past 16 years, you do notice the 'disappeared'... Mk 1 Vectras and Corsa are thin on the ground...Don't see any Fiat Brava/Bravo anymore.Peugeot 406 are also unusualDon't see many Saxos now eitherMK1 Focus is also disappearing fast.Espace has gone, Laguna Mk1 too...Not so many MK1 Zafira either. Basically anything that ceased to be made circa 2001 is dying out...A lot of the older stuff mentioned previously has already been missing from the roads for the past 10 to 15 years...i.e. I can't recall seeing a Vauxhall Senator or Carlton in the last 10 or 12 years, let alone recently. In fact it is the Omega that is the most recent big Vauxhall disappearance... Oldest cars I see on a regular basis are normally W201 Mercedes. I have started seeing a fucked H reg Reliant Regal van in colour that could be described as 'bauxite' with black duck tape repairs, driven by an old codger.... Bamboocarman 1
Junkman Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Bentley Turbo R; used to see loads around Wooton Basset.... Even more than the Turbo R, the Mulsanne Turbo should be on the IUCN Red List.
forddeliveryboy Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Given that leaded petrol vanished over 20 years ago and there are effectively no cars left without de-smogged exhausts, it's a mystery* why air pollution levels continue to rise. Is it all chainsaw and lawnmower exhust fumes, blowing into cities from the sticks? There are a couple of old Volvo estates round here, the odd ZX diesel estate, one or two rotting C-class from the late 90s, a mint 124 coupe owned by someone at the local Vauxhall dealership - and that's about it. for day to day chod. I think without the Peugeot back axle which disintegrates notoriously quickly on local roads, there would be loads of older Berlingos left. Owners don't mind cambelt bills but when there's an £800 ask for a recon axle every five years, they get rid. It's either newish Vauxhall people carriers or Kias. Mostly Kias - even the wealthy are buying them now that Jags have Pug straight fours and Mercs lost their reputation. Bamboocarman 1
mercrocker Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 A white ZX with no wheel trims has just driven round our office building. Hero..... Junkman 1

Is it all chainsaw and lawnmower exhust fumes, blowing into cities from the sticks? No, it's called "Diesel".Besides, the pollution levels have come down significantly since the demise of leaded petrol and the introduction of cats.I hope you know the difference between "emission" and "pollution".
forddeliveryboy Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Exactly - diesel. And as jonny69 has said, modern diesel particulates are excremely nasty. But in place of lead we've got benzene and heavy metal dust in congested urban areas. Just a matter of what the air is tested for... after all, the ground around Sellafield is apparently free of radioactive contamination according to the govt scientists. It's just that if you scratch the surface (well, 10mm deep) levels are huge. Negative Creep 1
HH-R Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I got cut up by a 406 the other day, but other than that can't remember the last time I saw one. K11 Micras, any left are looking seriously rough now. Mk5 Scrotes, see one or two but they always look days away from a scrapyard (and months past an MOT). 3 door mk3 Puntos for some reason? See plenty 5 doors. I notice these because I still look out for my old 3 door. I've not seen it since they day it was traded in in 2008 though , probably bean tins now.
Split_Pin Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Volvo 240s suddenly became extinct a few years ago, latterly I only saw 1 being used in Edinburgh by what appeared to be a charity supplying used furniture. Quite a lot of what has been mentioned survives in good numbers in a strange little triangle between Bonnybridge, Cumbernauld and somewhere near Airdrie. There's about one example of each in the streets near me, such as a P reg Escort, smiley face Transit, Saxo, N reg Laguna, mk1 Vectra and so on. Can't think of anything that has disappeared recently which I care about. Haven't seen a Citroën Xsara for a while. Early Volvo s40s are few and far between, I like those.
robinmasters Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Fiats. Mk1 Puntos are dying out, the bigger ones (Stilos, Bravas (or is that Bravos?)) are all but completely extinct. I haven't seen a Coupe for a while. Mk1 Lagunas. They should be lasting longer than reliable* Mk2. Volvo C70s have been slowly declining for a while, but have now got to the stage where they're noticeable by their absence. Ford Probes. Gone, with Cougars following closely behind. Jeep Cherokees, the early ones. Having written that down, I've realized they're all (apart from the Laguna) cars often bought by people for their image alone, so their disappearance isn't really all that surprising.
twosmoke300 Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 The later ford maverick ( not the Nissan terrano type)
skoda_fan Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 This thread has made me realize 1) it's true that all of the above are fast disappearing, but depressingly 2)I don't really care. I read in an article a while ago that cars in this category are unlikely to become "classic" because they are just like new cars only not as good. Why would anyone spend out to keep a soulless old Daewoo going, when for easy finance they can have a soulless new Kia? Am I just getting old and missing the whole Autoshite ethos? (Probably!)
MarvinsMom Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 no, it is true that todays moderns are all really soul numbing, spirit crushingly dull. a pishat?, no thanks, an aldi god knows what?, nope, some vw goon? i think not.... an bmwhocares? oh fuckin' hell, kill me now.... apart from the fact that they all look the same, take the badge off and you wouldn't know what it was, they are all the same bland crap, made with the same cheap crumby part from china, that when they fuck up, and they will, either the car will be rendered scrap cos the bit is NLA or it costs 4 times more than the frigging thing is worth. and as such they will end up as something more useful, such as a beans tin.
Rusty Pelican Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 MK 6 Escort saloons although theres a few vans still about , strangely vans seem to keep their rear arches better than saloons which dont keep any bodywork thats not plastic .Couldnt give a toss about the saloons becoming extinct but the vans id miss
Slappy Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I reckon we'll notice the numbers of Mk 4 Astras drop off significantly in the next couple of years. Many look like death warmed up, a lot are mildly barried, and every time I see a scrap collection lorry pass by there always seems to be one on the ramps. I hope the Coupe versions remain an exception though, but I think that will be the case hopefully (BTCC pedigree and all that).
drum Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I saw an early vectra estate today. The first one I've seen in a while. I used to think they were gawpingly ugly but I found it strangely attractive, ergo they must be falling into the rare shite category. Signums are also vanishing.
SambaS Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I saw a MK1 Kia Mentor today..... mmmmmmm. I WILL get a photo of it one day oldcars 1
phil_lihp Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Mercedes C-classes from the 1990's seem to have all but vanished. Quite a smart looker in their day but I'm guessing the rampant rot problems have killed off most of them. The very first ones on an M-plate with orange indicators are a particularly rare sight now.
dollywobbler Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Most of the cars mentioned so far can often be spotted in regular use in West Wales. I love it here.
