Another eBay Seller Description Disappoints Me and Ruins Today

I went to collect the Chrysler Sebring convertible I won on eBay today from the Wirral a 350 mile round trip, when I got there I found the car has lots of faults none of which the seller mentioned even when asked in writing

The whole of the o-s of the car had been repainted and the paint was flat with a small patch peeling and the paint on the side trim was lifting.

Ding in boot lid.

One of the rear side windows did not work without grabbing it and pulling it to get it started

The hood had been repaired badly with mastic over a joint and mastic around the rear window.

The suspension rattled and banged over rough ground in spite of the recent MOT.

The boot lock was damaged by a break in, supplied with a secondhand one not fitted with the wrong key.

The rev counter did not work.

Front seats had badly slit leather when he stated they had some cracking.

The Air conditioning did not work.

Paint peeling from the hood internal handles.

78,000 miles not the 76,000 stated.

All this in spite of me asking the seller in a PM did the car have any faults I should know about and the reply returned saying “no know faults

I rejected the car as not being as described and felt very disappointed.

I have never been to the Wirral or Liverpool so we had a drive around the old dock area and I enjoyed seeing the old industrial history. Then we stumbled on Woodside Birkenhead Ferry port and decided to take a trip across the Mersey!

A friend came with me and the ZX TD Estate performed faultlessly doing 45 mpg driven at a full 70mph!

Good! You walked away to fight another day. ☺

Car sounds perfect for this forum.

On the plus side, you couldn't have been in a nicer part of the country.

That's a pretty extensive list, Chris. Do you 'CSI' the cars you sell thoroughly? Seller sounds like a fud.

But but but one man's idea of mint condition will be so much different from another's.

View before you buy, caveat emptor etc etc.

It is amazing what trash people out up with and how many faults on a car somebody can class as 'just normal'

I would have easily put up with those faults in a £500 car, but would expect better for £2K. Are those fat yankmobiles popular enough to justify the price ?

The seller has five denim shirts currently for sale on eBay.

five.

kin scousers etc :D

I spent Yesterday at the races. I had a more disappointing day. When I was mugged by scousers, I lost less money.

Narrow escape.

Chrysler Sebring Floppytop epitomises the kind of car that is ok to rent but crazy to buy and at £2k just not worth the struggle.

The problem of viewing first is you then have a second journey to make to collect it if you are successfully.

There is another one for sale in Liverpool now, I would ask if someone local could go and see it for me but the car is for Mrs cylinder and she is not keen on a black car with a black interior.

I agree but this is Mrs cylinders desire and it has come up before I am very lucky to have a wife who likes but but with that goes her own strong options as to what we should have. I would rather have a 1994-5 Mustange 5.0  Ltr GT.

The close ups of the pictures show what seems to be different shades of paint between panels in places and WTF is going on with the n/s/f wing where the front indicator is, and where the wings meets the bonnet?

He probably hoped because you'd come all that way that you'd buy it anyhow. I hope you neg him to high heaven.

Perhaps I should stick to "Autoshite approved used cars" instead in the future! Now who's got a ............

I had a similar one with a Sierra 3 door, ad said it was in excellent condition, got there, the old EMAX lump was pissing oil out of every orifice, the interior was run ragged, arches full of wob.

Some people's idea of excellent and mine differ somewhat.

A bit like ads that say 'runs ok' I mean if that's anything to go by it barely runs at all.

Based on the ad, I, too, would have expected a creampuff, especially at this tariff.

Providing knowingly wrong answers to your inquiries is well naff.

Strange, since I bought some of my best cars from Scousers, although all of them were private sellers.

I found them very nice to deal with and very open and honest.

Helped someone view a car out in New Zealand. A 1996 Mitsubishi Diamante

The guy selling it seemed dodgy, apparently he owned it for the past six months, but had no real paperwork to speak of. We met on a street expecting the car to be sitting there waiting but he then drove the car down to meet us. When questioned as to where he had been he said he had quickly had to go to get sausages, which, true to his word, were sitting in a packet on the back seat. The temperature gauge was right in the middle though so it was obvious he wasn't keen on having us starting the car from cold. I think this was to hide a problem with the exhaust system as it was still evidently very loud.

The seller almost insisted on the windows being down and the radio turned on whilst giving it a test drive, I suspect to hide the noises from the worn out suspension.

One minute he proudly stated it was chain driven, so no need for a cambelt, then the next he states that the cambelt was changed around 40000kms ago.

The rear tyres were also worse than bald, and I'm not sure about the rest of the car as the only time he was free for viewings etc was in the dark.

Apparently he had a lot of interest though already and someone had already been round earlier that day and made an offer close to the asking price, so it was important we let him know a decision as soon as possible. Strange, as its still sat on the street with a for sale sign in the window a week or so later.

A lucky escape, although a pita that you had to travel a fair bit to not buy it.

Is it wrong that I quite like the pt cruiser convertible on the first eBay link (apart from the shitty bits)?

That's dangerous, too, since everyone has a different perception.

Especially people with a long yank track record would probably dismiss all the "faults" you listed as perfectly normal and become suspicious if a car doesn't have them.

If it was the Wirral then no Scouser involved. ;)

I realise that mis or under descriptions happen thousands of times every day, but why?  In no time over the past too many years, buying far too many cars have I turned up, after either a detailed phone or email talk-through, and discovered a rat and then said, "OK, you've lied to me, I suspect you are dodgier than a dodgey thing and the car will be worse on the way home, but as I've come 10 feet/500 miles, I'll take it anyway".

Who do these driveway dealers actually convince?

Who do these driveway dealers actually convince?

Themselves.

We live in a society, where an overwhelmingly high proportion of people think they are blessed with intelligence to the bursting point,

but in reality are so stupid that they rattle when they walk.
