CortinaDave Posted April 6, 2015 Author Posted April 6, 2015 15 quid plus a fiver to post it? Or come get it.. I'm in fife (or Aberdeen at the weekends ) VW one is free for whoever wants to cover the post of a fiver or so
bub2006 Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 Possibly not, but I wanted new tyres for the calibra anyway and the alloys are a bonus. As long as I clear my feet im happy enough, and I get the warm glow of stopping a half decent car being cubed.New owner can buy some from scrappy, car lives on and you get new wheels so all well mate. Not a fan of this shape astra myself but it looks very smart for what you paid
RobT Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 Although I liked the Calibra with trims for the comedy boggo look, it'll look hot on those alloys. CortinaDave 1
CortinaDave Posted April 10, 2015 Author Posted April 10, 2015 Wheels duly nicked. I quite like them on the calibra. Astra on inspection needs 2 brake pipes and the 2 shock absorbers. Apart from that it seems really tidy underneath. I've got a ten quid MOT voucher so I'm going to do those bits and stick it in. Should pass at that I think and it'll have a years test for under a ton all in. Then it's out with the polish and stick it on gumtree. trigger, cort16, RobT and 2 others 5
Cavcraft Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Dear God, that isn't just a car, it's a thing of absolute beauty. Jim Bell and CortinaDave 2
CortinaDave Posted April 10, 2015 Author Posted April 10, 2015 Must admit I'm really chuffed with the calibra. I've had a few over the years and it's the best one by a mile. Just bought a new half back exhaust for it which is going on through the week, and it's currently an ornament because the fuel pump packed in yesterday. What I love about these cars though is that everything seems to be ten quid and a piece of piss to sort. I suspect the fuel filter has been blocked solid and overworking the pump. Found an app for my phone that takes any photo you have and makes it look like you are champion the wonder artist. Just ran this photo through it - RobT, DVee8 and Cavcraft 3
Lacquer Peel Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 It does look good on the Astra alloys, and swapping the set with nearly new tyres for a set with ancient teflon tyres is a no brainer, as an American man might say. CortinaDave and Cavcraft 2
mk2_craig Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 I don't care how dull these Astras are, you'd have to be brain dead to send that over the bridge just because you weren't sure if it would sail another test. New POD 1
RoadworkUK Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 My guess is that Scrappy Joe woudn't have even considered baling it. He would have turned up and requested that you passed it over on the green slip. He'll have marketed it at £995 on an advert with lots of keywords like "2 door", "Coupe", "Air conditioning" and "Sporty".
They_all_do_that_sir Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Bloody hell amazing what people would scrap. To me that car would be an upgrade compared to what I've got at the minute.... New POD, JohnK and RobT 3
greengartside Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Fuck a duck, that Astra's in better nick than mine. Well saved, sir.
CortinaDave Posted April 16, 2015 Author Posted April 16, 2015 YAHOO. £150 Astra passes its MoT first time on a ten quid special offer voucher. Got away with just wire brushing the brake pipes as they weren't too bad. Shocks cost me £25 and my mate fitted them for a tenner a side. So total cost as it stands - £150 for the car £45 in parts and labour and a tenner for the test. It stands me £205 with a full years ticket. Pardon my French but I'm fucking delighted. My biggest concern this morning when it was going for its test was the headlights which were really cloudy. I spent most of yesterday with various polishes, toothpaste etc but nothing was making the slightest jot of difference. So I cheated and put a thin film of motor oil on the lenses ten minutes before the MOT which made them look brand new... For probably a couple of hours 😂 xtriple, Shep Shepherd, Rusty_Rocket and 3 others 6
Vince70 Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 That's great news it went through the ticket.I find that using 2000 grade wet and dry and hot soapy water normally brings headlamps up a treat then go over them afterwards with a light compound and polish. It looks like you've got the autoshite bargain of the year with that lovely Astra next you will be telling us it's only done 20000 miles and has a full history and has dozens of service stamps in the book.
CortinaDave Posted April 16, 2015 Author Posted April 16, 2015 I've stuck it on gumtree for 600. Realistically I'm happy if I get 5. Have to agree with those who said it wouldn't look as good without its alloys - they did set the car off, but my need was greater unfortunately. It actually seems to be a decent old car now the shocks are done. Runs and drives really well and seems quite rapid. My only concern if I was holding on to it long term would be the indeterminate age timing belt, although I'm led to believe that's quite a simple job on these. cort16 1
CortinaDave Posted April 16, 2015 Author Posted April 16, 2015 ... And so the gumtree mongs begin. Text message that just says "500" I reply saying - come and see it and if you like it there might be a deal to be done. He replies - " over 700 once I tax it for a yr m8 I'm not wasting my time 500" Knob. Come out and look at the thing. Another woman rings . "Is it diesel?" No I reply * she hangs up" Hilarious!
Rusty_Rocket Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 God, it sounds like you're already attracting the lowest of the low 'Gumtree-ers'.. That is a perfect car for the money, I wouldn't drop too much. Hell, with a new belt and the odd oil change, it'll last years! Vince70 and Mr_Bo11ox 2

CortinaDave Posted April 16, 2015 Author Posted April 16, 2015 sold paid for and gone. Boom! 550 quid. Vince70, Cavcraft, cort16 and 2 others 5
New POD Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 That is one (Fucking) bargain. Not as Cheap as the astra my wife's dad didn't want with only 19K on the clock Which he Gave to my son last summer (second time I've posted them pictures, but hey, we all love an astra) If you hadn't sold it I was thinking about it. What kind of tosspot only wants £135 quid for a car that was worth £700, (before you stole the alloys) ? Does he have a house he wants to sell for £37.50 ? CortinaDave and AnthonyG 2
CortinaDave Posted April 16, 2015 Author Posted April 16, 2015 Did wonder if it would be you testing Tiff. I've seen the X1/9 sitting outside a couple of times. You've got the calibra to test in a couple of months as well👠Thank you for not cremating the Astra!

I'd have just messaged him back and advised him to look at cars that are advertised for £400. Then I would have rang that bird back and when she answered I would have said 'Does your phone do this?' and promptly hung up. Rusty_Rocket, AnthonyG, Vince70 and 2 others 5

You've got the calibra to test in a couple of months as well Thank you for not cremating the Astra!I actually commented on how decent a car it was,not knowing whose it was. I thought it was a povvo spec ex CID motor until I opened the bonnet. I'm sure it must have been you casting your eye over the Calibra Turbo parked at the door... CortinaDave 1
motormatt Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Even these astras seem far too new to be going over the bridge! CortinaDave 1
Barry Cade Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 A This one? Bloody lovely.Aye, That's Ronnies. Had it 9 years. 1.8 OHC turbo conversion...he's got about 3 other Calibra's in bits all over the garage. CortinaDave 1
Split_Pin Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Good result that! The alloys look good on the Calibra.
Hendry Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I'm going to be honest here, I kinda like the look of the Astra on the Calibra trims, puts me in mind of early mk3 Cav SRis.
AnthonyG Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 The guy you bought it from does sound like an idiot, why spend a few hundred on a car and then just get fed up because it runs out of MOT? Sums up what Rev BJ was saying on another thread about pure waste. Don't forget to let him know how it easily passed an MoT at such little cost and work. I would have been inclined to run it for the next 7 years or so whilst he spends 15k on his next dozen cars!!! New POD 1
sierraman Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Is it a diesel? I'd have told her yes, let the silly twat buy it then unsuccessfully fill it with £15 diesel. Jim Bell 1
