Un exciting astrashite.

Was over at the in laws to be the other day at the time it just so happened SWMBO's brother was ringing the scrappy to take away his astra.

Although dull, it didn't seem a bad old bus so I swooped and offered £150 for it against Overton dismantlers £135.

Nice original 16 inch alloys with near new goodyears all round, a three week old battery, Carlos fandango stereo and a newish shiny full exhaust.

The test is out hence the scrapping as he's pissed off at having shelled out for new tyres , exhaust and battery in the last couple of months.

Seems to me a stupid plan. I reckon it needs an adjust on the handbrake and a set of rear shock absorbers and it should pass an MOT, so I plan to swipe the alloys for the Calibra, wang the stereo on gum tree and use the £10 mot voucher I've got to see what the mot man makes of it.

If it needs much I'll just weigh it in for near money back and take the free alloys and battery etc , if it's a cheap fix I'll flog it on for profit.

What's this worth with a years test? 4-500?

Why would someone scrap that ? Madness in this disposable society we live in

Looks far better than I expected. As I was working my way down the page I expected something looking pretty tired and mk3 stylee. Cavcraft will be impressed with that.

The back shocks are so bad it's like driving a bouncy castle. Otherwise though it's tidy. Came with 3 other stereos in the boot too including the original vauxhall cd500 which I'll put back in

Thought it would be worth a bit more than 500. Desirable colour and trim level. Looks nice for what you paid

That looks a million times better in the photos than I expected when I started reading. It's quite a nice car - why on earth would someone scrap it?

Looks a decent nick car, most mk4s look scabby, tired and battle scarred, they are dull as dishwater but will run forever with little maintenance, I sold my uncles missus my old 52 plate 1.6 16v Comfort 5 years ago for £1900 with 87K on it, full folder of history, recent genuine timing belt kit and water pump, wiper motor and linkage, mint interior, I'd spent thousands on it but it had scabby rear arches, poorly repaired body damage, ticked constantly (previous ran on no oil) and had started burning oil (hence why it'd been ran on no oil) so piston rings or valve stems seals away, I expected it to last 2 years tops as she has no mechanical sympathy and doesn't do maintenance it goes for a mot every year and gets the bare minimum it needs to pass, but 5 years later its still going and has just gone through another mot.

That would easily fetch £750, I regularly see less tidy ones going for circa a grand on ebay, Gumtree, auto trader, free car classifieds from the petrol station etc.

That looks dead tidy. I sold the former Mrs xbols 1.6 16v X-plate one of these a year or so ago for 550 quid with a years ticket, was a piece of cake. If its clean and tidy with a years ticket and a recent cambelt i think you could ask £6-700 and have no problem shifting that.

The shocks are like 20 quid each as I replaced the ones on that coupe I had.

simple mech stuff to pass mot - do it :D

wang about in it sell for lots to fund nice old shite :D

There must be £595-£650 in that with a full ticket. The models with the white dials are far nicer than the boggo dash on these things, I loved my 1.6 Sport one.

Posted

Bargain that and wouldn't take much to get it up to spec, then stick it up for £795

Posted

I'm also in need of a stereo if you've got anything for cheapness....

Posted

That is an epic bargain and a nice looking motor in that colour and spec.

Agreed, the "Comfort" trim one I had was fairly well equipped for a mk4 Astra with rear electric windows which I was told was pretty uncommon. It also had chrome dial rings, steering wheel audio controls, electric door mirrors and air con but the boggo black dials, horrid "velour" seats that absolutely everything stuck to, fluff, fibres from clothes etc and a walnut veneer effect centre console and gearknob, luckily a genuine aluminium/alloy effect centre console as fitted to this car was a measly 13 quid inc vat from the VX dealers parts counter.

Cort16 - I don't suppose the cars got the extra stalk wiring and adaptors to allow the factory steering wheel controls to control the Sony head unit? IIRC when I bought them for an Alpine stereo for my mk4 they were quite expensive so could be worth £20-30 on scumtree?

Posted

Aye it's properly wired in with the wheel controls fully working. I'm not sure whether to take it out or just leave it for extra sale value given I'll be swiping the alloys

As to the other stereos.. There's a boxed JVC CD player , the Vauxhal vdo500 and a shitey 90s Vw branded radio cassette . I'll take some pics later.. But they won't be dear.

swipe the alloys for the Calibra,

Just a friendly reminder that this is Autoshite, and we praise trims.

Also I don't think they'd look that good IMO.

That is one nice looking motor. I drive ALOT of these whilst at Mahmouds garage. Lovely cars to drive, they feel adequate and unpretentious.

Sadly most just see it as scrap fodder/disposal goods. Good to see its been saved from the jaws of the baler.

Losing its alloys are the price it pays for not being cubed, which it would otherwise have been.

The tyres on the calibra are perfectly legal but ancient, this has four brand new goodyears so I'm 100% swapping them.

The calibra wheels are 15inch so should fill the arches of this ok... Most of this gen astra seems to have trims anyway

Sold a couple of sxi's in the past. Both sold for around a grand 2 years ago. Easy 650-750 there. Good spec

Don't think it will get as good a price without the alloys on but it's your choice mate.

Posted

I was just thinking that and wondering why someone would scrap a three year old car.  Only it's a not a three year old car.

Possibly not, but I wanted new tyres for the calibra anyway and the alloys are a bonus. As long as I clear my feet im happy enough, and I get the warm glow of stopping a half decent car being cubed.
