Special Moments in Shite

What special moments have you had driving your shite that you wouldn't have had in a new car.

Today I was cruising on the motorway with the sun shining and singing along to The Bee Gees Saturday Night Fever on my  8 track blasting from my 5W shelf speakers with a big grin on my face.

This just wouldn't have been the same in a modern car.

I once met a lovely slightly chubby bird and she left a stain on the back seat of my Sierra I bought for £90.

That slightly odd grey fabric that was in all fords near enough late 80's early 90's was a bugger for stains.

When i collected my son from nursery with the reliant. "You have'nt done the choke daddy". No need on a hot start son. He's only 4 but by the sounds of him he will be a car lover :)

Years back I was sat at traffic lights in my manta dancing while singing along to Lionel Ritchie dancing on the ceiling wearing my aviators, and didnt notice the 2 birds sat next to me at the lights checking me and the car out, probably thought I was on day release

The feeling of joy every morning when it starts.

Was she uncomplimentary about the Sierra?

Not such a big moment if you drive OJCs.

Back when tax discs existed I had a ropey looking chavalier 1.7TD (K286NCM is long since cubed) I got pulled to check I had a tax disc. They also asked to look in the boot. It just looked that sort of car.

I think that learning a new skill, or understanding how something works is a big part of it, as is fixing something that many folks would unthinkingly chuck out.

Many of my moments have been spoiled because of failure to proceed or whatever. So only ones I can be arsed to remember...

• When I first bought my first Mk1 827Si, driving the car that I'd longed for and loved was like nothing I could ever imagine. I was driving a proper Mk1 Rover 800 that well special. Sadly gone now :(

• Driving my Mk2 827 Sterling all suited and booted up after a job interview some years ago, I felt like some proper mid 90s businessman.

Since then I can't say I've had any of these moments.

Turning up for a job interview last year in my Mk2 Golf GTi and getting instant cred from my now work colleagues.

The first drive in my mk1 mr2 driving down a country road on a sunny day with the t-bar panels out, windows down and zingy 1.6 twin cam engine asking for more revs, perfect!

The looks of mild confusion mingled with utter hatred from passers-by and other drivers, as I negotiated Tesco's entrance roundabout sideways in a battered brown Lada Riva. Again, and again, and again.

Drove the Allegro to a friends wedding in the Cotwolds from Kent, before travelling up to Gaydon the next day for the 40th anniversary meet. When the Groom was introducing me to others it was "this is Alex, he's the one with the Allegro"

87mph, new Little Dragon CD, A/C set just so, dark A12, passing cars fifteen years younger.... knowing that mine isn't depreciating.

One time I remember was being called out to work in the middle of the night many years ago. It was a clear night with loads of stars out and I had the roof down in one of the Fiat Strada Cabrios I used to have.

Was a great, fast drive with loud music made even better by the fact I was being paid. ;-)

Over taking a Bimmer M5 in the snow last year in my old dented to feck Fozzer

Shouting at him 'wheres your God now' First and possibly last time I ever overtake a M5 or any bimmer

I have had one or two lately (see Oscar The Cowley birthday caper) but almost every journey in an old car is special in some small way.   We went to Westward Ho! last weekend and I was glad I had a nice smooth reliable comfortable Merc to take but we still went in the Minor instead.   It felt great parking it outside the 1960s chalets and seeing it in the morning when we got up.  It took about 20 minutes longer and used about £10 less fuel to use the Morris!   Using him everyday for work makes even that journey more bearable - its a better place to sit out a meal break than the bloody mess room that's for sure....

Coming back down the M6 from the 2CV World Meeting at Kelso in 2005, favourite co-pilot riding shotgun (he was only 9 then!)  In convoy with my mate Martin, both Dyanes were in that trancendental groove that only happens once in a while; lane 3, 75-85mph, moving as one, Mercs and Audis getting neatly out of the way...

Brilliant.
