I have lost my marbles!

I've gone crazy I think, I have done 3 very foolish things, I have bought a brand new car, and its a Vauxhall, and a Corsa.

On the plus side I've got shot of my shitty mk3 Clio, all Vauxhalls are shit etc.!

I bought a '12 Corsa, biggest mistake of my life. Thankfully the first owner had taken the biggest hit to the wallet by losing over a quid for every mile he drove in sheer depreciation (4,000ish on the clock when I bought it) but I still ended up selling it for £3.5k less than I owed on the finance plan (36,000 miles on the clock)...

It also drove like shit, rode like shit, servicing was impossible to DIY and a fortune at the dealer, it started to fall apart despite me bothering to look after it, the paint had worse orange peel than my 1970s economy car and it felt huge and was impossible to see out the back despite it being a "small" car.

Buy a modern car my parents said, it'll be reliable and won't cost you money like an old banger they said...

That's what my friends said when I was convinced to sell my old shite cars and buy a modern car. It was also a Vauxhall and cost £3.5k and was sold 2 months later for £650.

The new Corsas are quite nice to drive though TBH. Sure they are good to own pretty new too with a warranty. Like any car its further down the chain you feel the pain.

A friend of mine hired one of these recently. I have to say, I quite liked it.

Driven a '13. No they're not.

IMO a 50,000 mile fifteen year old Civic drives better than a Corsa on delivery miles.

Though that's proably not a fair comparison.

The only foolish thing that you did was to actually buy it. You could have had it on a PCP  like everyone else, for 35p down and £1.47 per month (or so I am led to believe :)) and handed it back just before the warranty and most of the electronics expired ;)

Nice one, what model did you get? My lad still impressed with his 2014 1.2 'Sting' (insert your own irony jokes here) and it's not a bad car at all.

I once bought a new Golf so I understand what you are going through. I got over it and am ok now.

If its a 2 door then i hope you have an account at the chiropractors we have one at work and you have to pull the seat belt out before you get in as its almost impossible to do once you are sitting in the seat......makes you look like a right plonker as you get in but that doesnt really matter as driving a Poxhall people already assume the worst. I am just grateful the car is signwritten so they know i did not spend my own money on it.....

Had engine management light on and drove like shit. Took it to 4 different garages who all said it was the same problem, 'repaired' it and then took money off me and gave it back to me only for it to happen again within hours.

Wanged it on ebay and it sold for jack all to a couple of police car mechanics who traced the problem to a broken wire somewhere or other.

Bumhats.

Only new thing I have ever bought was a mattress, and I quibbled about that

A slippery slope indeed.

My mate's GTD Golf, (he always buys new fuck nose why he bothers with an old scruff like me making the place look untidy), the EGR made of cheese shit itself as they all do at 4 years old just outa warranty, so around £800 to fix its buried as usual being an almost service item on veedub shit, sod that so he 'invested' in another brand new one of the latest model a few weeks ago.

I spend most of me time with him shaking me head in bewilderment...buggered if i know where he gets the money.

Corsa aint a bad motor, i quite liked the Nova SRi, they're ok so long as you avoid the 3 cyl wanking chariot and the automated manual satan box.

don't worry, when you come to you senses, you can rely on your old mates at Autoshite to tell you 'I told you so' when it shits itself......

Have to confess to still being very happy with out new Picanto automatic we bought a couple of months ago.  Nice little car, bought on a PCP and suits our needs perfectly.  Sometimes buying new makes sense.

But did it ever lock you in at the co- op?

If it works for you (and we have no idea of your circumstances), well done. There is something about the feel of a brand-new car, and the new Corsa does look like a funky little(-ish) thing

But did it ever lock you in at the co- op?

No, but oddly the central locking never worked at the Somerfield at Texaco up the road. The electronics used to go mental there and sometimes the car wouldn't start etc. Someone on here suggested that there might have been a telephone transmitter in the garage sign playing silly buggers with it.

It's the new model (Corsa E I think) and it's the 3 door 1.4 petrol 90bhp "ecoflex" SRi (which is the new SXi) the SRi VX-Line replaces the SRi of old. Being the ecoflex its £30 a year tax, It cost £2500 less than list price as I bought one the dealer already had sitting in the compound (but still brand new unregistered) it's a gunmetal grey colour (official name is something wanky like "shiny Rock") and the spec is pretty good, USB, DAB radio, Bluetooth, intellilink, touchscreen stereo, heated front screen like the Fords, front sports seats, 16" black alloys, LED DRLs, sight and light pack (auto lights, rain sensor wipers, auto dim rear view mirror) tyre pressure monitoring, trip computer/check control, plus the usual remote locking, loads of airbags, air con, electric windows and mirrors, front fogs, and then some nifty wee touches like mood lights under the interior mirror, in the cup holders and front door pockets, aluminium pedals, lights come on when you unlock it.

I was really impressed tbh as we still have Corsa Ds at work on 63 and 64 plates and they are awful to drive. This feels much better, better built, smoother and more refined, and the reason I bought it on HP rather than PCP is I actually like to own my car eventually rather than feel like it's leased and not mine and never going to be. Plus the dealer gave me a fantastic deal on the finance (better than I could've got 5 years ago when I worked in a dealers) plus I got £2700 p/ex for a 55,000 mile 2009 '59' Renault Clio 1.2 Dynamique 3 door, good condition with FSH but which needs 2 tyres, a service, timing belt kit/aux belt kit/water pump change, and the mot was up at the end of the month and it was needing work for that too plus the tax was up at the end of the month as well so a good price IMO, only issue is it was bought from Arnold Shark, there is 2 independent Vauxhall dealers left within 30/40 miles of me, the rest are all either Arnold Clark, Evans Halshaw or Peter Vardy so all big chains with a bad rep and Arnold offered the best deal.

The 1 thing I would say with the new Corsa is the model range is confusing, it's not like the old hierarchy where each model was the next rung up the ladder like the old Merit/Envoy, L, LS, GLS, CD, CDX, SRI, GSi type thing. There's the Life which is base model, then all models are side by side after that, other than SRi and SRI VX-Line, they each have features that the other doesn't, e.g. The Limited Edition has a body kit and 17" alloys where mine doesn't, but I've got sight and light pack and folding rear seat which the LE doesn't. The Sting R model doesn't have anything like the equipment of the other models but has a VXR steering wheel and gear knob which no other model has. It's all very confusing, no more going in and picking the top trim as there isn't one.

I reckon new cars should come with a menu.  You pick which items you want from the list, have a mild coronary at the price, readjust your selection and go from there.  All these exactly the same but different models just seems odd, if all the parts are interchangeable why not give the customer personal choice?

Of course, all car manufacturers need only one basic set of options:  Billy Basic, Middling, Top Brass and Sport.

I do have odd days when I feel like throwing in the towel and buying a new car. Actually working out what it's costing, and thinking for the same money I could have had one of these

Usually snaps me out it.

I may still get a Sandero Access one day.. it's cheap enough for depreciation to not matter

Your model is a better spec than my "Black Edition" which is essentially an (Un)Limited Edition but with the 1.4 turbo engine and only available in Henry Ford's favourite colour. Mine also had lower suspension* and bigger wheels with low profile tyres, might be why I didn't like the ride quality so much, although my mate's Audis and BMWs were even less comfy! I'd forgotten about the fact the seatbelt mounting is about 3 miles behind the driver, especially if you're a short arse like me and have the seat quite far forward. I also found the doors to be ridiculously long and squeezing in and out of the car in parking spaces was no fun at all.

It's not exactly a small car either...

Spare wheel is/was an extra, mine didn't have one. Naturally it's the only car I've owned where I've needed one...

If there were any positives it's that unlike the Dolomites it required no upkeep and was utterly hassle free. Given both my cars are currently broken and my bank balance is a stupendous £10 I have to admit a modern car does seem tempting until I remember the cost of the finance plan!

* Actually, Vauxhaul cocked it up in the usual Vauxhall fashion and only one end of the car had the lower suspension. It was recalled and they sorted it free of charge when I replaced a wheel...

Posted

Please say it comes with a spare wheel ?

No, as it was one already in stock at the dealers and not a factory order so I couldn't spec it, I'm planning to get one sorted out though, although I reckon its going to cost more than the £95 the factory option costs, although better that than paying full list price.

Yeah the only reason mine is better specced than your old one is its the new Corsa E model which throughout the whole range is better specced than the D. My spec on the D wouldve been SXi so yours would've been much better specced but oddly missing side and curtain airbags and map reading lights.

Just out of interest, how on earth did Vauxhall manage to mess up the sports suspension? And was it just your car or a batch of them affected?

A batch of 2012 Black Editions left the factory with normal springs at one end and "sports ones" at the other, there isn't much in it really and I never noticed until looking at photos after my local dealer told me it was wrong!

I got talking to my mum's neighbour about his new Hyundai and sort of zoned out, agreeing with his choice of motor car and praising the free tax and high MPG.

I SPENT SEVERAL THOUSAND POUNDS ON A MISERABLE NEW CAR TO SAVE MONEY SUCH FINANCIAL GENIUS WOW.

Posted

Crazily, if you spend £95 on a spare wheel for a Corsa, like my mum just found on her '15 plate SE, you lose the inflation kit so not only are they robbing you for a steelie and a tyre, they're taking stuff out too.

Hers looks nice though. Top line with heated steering wheel, Bluetooth, nav etc... And above all it's a new car, which she really wanted. The dealer was also nice, she's a bugger for wasting their time when she feels they're not trying hard enough but they were spot on. Even gave her a full tank of fuel, because she'd filled up her Fiesta trade in and they bought the date forward two weeks so she couldn't use it all.
