Brookjm's Volvo 760 turbotdieasal soot-omatic

I got this off a friend thats a local coach driver. At the moment he has the ex brookjm volvo 960 on his fleet in addition to a 700 series limo that he uses instead of an MPV. He had spotted this white 760 diesel half heartedly advertised by the roadside (behind a low wall so only coach/ HGV drivers would ever have known it was there!) He bought it on impulse; there was no real role for it although he was contemplating chopping it into a pickup. We bumped into each other during last week and to cut a long story short, in a deal he gains a tatty rover p4 and I gained this (with a cash adjustment).......

Well whats it like? Its been sat for a while, all the tyres needed lots of air, Brunel would have approved of the smoke to begin with but now its settled down, I think it just needed a good blast. The autobox and truck-like 6 cylinder diesel seem a good match. Theres sometimes quite a noticable transfer of transmission rumble/ vibration, espectially when the box changes down coming to a standstill. Ive had a look underneath and I think the rubber mount that sits on a cross member at the rear of the autobox is shot- I can move the rear of the prop and transmission casing a bit up and down with my hands, is this a common problem? Looks easy enough to sort. There's what I think is the ABS light on the dash- I'm hoping cleaning up the sensors will sort? Also the TURBO light is on permenantly. The turbo seems to be working-any ideas? Although in 700 series shock news the actual dash cluster is working perfectly. The MOT is due at the end of the month so a bit of work/ fiddling ahead, but on the whole its a sold old thing. I think It may have had a bump at the front as the bumper is a later one (I think) without the chrome bits and one front wing isnt quite the right shade, but you can't see that from the squashy black leather interior.  I think this may become my shitefest transport of choice.

I think the turbo light is to signify too high an exhaust gas temperature, so might just be a sensor.

I've had a couple of D24TIC Volvos and both of them smoked like fuck, that's just their way. Looks like a winner wagon.

Wahey!  I give you joy of your purchase, sir.

Bit sad at the P4 leaving the family - get your friend to sign up, he sounds like he'd fit in (as long as he doesn't mind abuse for his dodgy angle grinder pickup ideas).

Aye. Sad the P4 has gone, but a pretty fabulous replacement. I really do want to join in and try one of these.

...the TURBO light is on permenantly.

Isn't that the light that glows on KITT's dash when gravity defying jumps are forthcoming?

Looks good brookjim.

Did all 760's come with the 3 lights in the headlight like that? It looks kind of weird to me.

What!!!! This is the nuts. I can't wait to get mine sorted, think have everything I need for an MOT now thanks to a free headlight from CMS_volvo_services

Integrated foglights. Gr8 for driving with your foglights all the time without looking like one of those twats who have their foglights on all the time.

^ Yes! Volvo 760/940 headlights are probably the best I've ever had on a car.

This looks thoroughly acceptable in every way with mega bonus points for a working instrument cluster.

Is the ABS light on permanently or is it intermittent? Corroded brake disc back plates at the front can cause intermittent ABS problems due to rusty shite sticking to the sensor.

Or GR8 for looking like you've got your main beam on. See also Nissan Terrano II first facelift.

^ yes it's just an intermittent light, goes off once the car has started but once under way it lights up. Wondering if I have to remove the brake discs to get to the sensors to clean them properly.

I like your thinking Matthew regarding Shitefest transport, no need for that Poundland tent now. Shame the P4 has gone though, had you reached an impass with it? Or a simple case of one in one out policy?

Posted

Aye you'll need to take the disc off to get at it which is a bit of a pain. I had the same problem with the white 940 and found jet washing it regularly would sort it for a few weeks so just did that instead.

Welcome to the world of Volvos, looks a good buy that.

Only had mine a week or so now and i love it, would love a drive of a Diesel version.

Hope you enjoy it, and it brings you great service.

The TURBO light is on to highlight the fact you're a winner.

This is turning into the best forum of ever. SO MANY VOLVOS!

All you need is a small white dog and you'll have cracked it.

Model year 88 onwards facelift, which also means better dashboard, indicator/wiper stalks, alloy bonnet, obscured wipers, different windscreen and scuttle, ABS, sealed front hub bearings, and a host of other trivia.

That looks amazing! :-D

I also agree that 760/940/960 headlights are GR9, especially if fitted with uprated bulbs. Pity that 740 ones aren't anywhere near as good.

... like all good Volvos. For a while it was the SVM Profession of Choice.

There's what I think is the ABS light on the dash...

It is; same style as the coaches. If it's been sitting the sensors will be cruddy.

It's definitely got 940 headlights, but the bumper was the same as the 940 IIRC; that looks like it's off a 940 base as it's got no moulding whatsoever on the top of the bumper, normally on 940s it was body coloured or chrome. It's definitely got facelift 760/pre-facelift 960 wings and bonnet as they are slightly different to the 940.

Seriously though, now I'm on a PC and can see the pictures more clearly that looks GR12 - don't think I've ever seen a white 760 before, must've been a delete option to lose the metallic paint.

I've recently been tackling various little jobs in anticipation of today's MOT. The most obvious fail was the ABS light on the dash. After much cleaning up of sensor connectiors and relays, I decided to remove the front discs so I could clean up the sensors themselves as they are magnetic and attract all sorts of crap. Still the light winked. In despiration (im not very good with electrics) I removed the bulb from the dash like a right bodger. I then had a bit of a moral dilemma and decided to fix it properly and put the bulb back in the instrument cluster. I broke out the multimeter (always had one, more because I thought I should ratzher than actually knowing how to use it) and noticed one front sensor wasnt giving a resistance reading. After a bit of messing about trying to find a sensibly priced bosch sensor it arrived in the post today on the day of the MOT! Once fitted that warning light finally went out.

I did have a bit of a worry about the timing belt and the smoke test as Ive got no idea when it was replaced, and running it up to the govenor like they do can give a tired belt a hard time. Its high up on the to do list. In the end it did fail. A few minor things but an advisory on a borked propshaft UJ which explains the rumbling through the drivetrain that I had thought was a knackered transmission mount. Recently I've tried to tackle everything myself but at the mo I'm tight for time so Ive asked the garage to sort it- should be back with me in a few days. Oh and it actually passed the smoke test!

Posted

Excellent, nothing too serious then. Good work on fixing the ABS. I think my 440 must have a borked UJ too, as I'm getting rumblings under acceleration.

Nice work, looks like a tidy old crate.  Certainly tidier than mine, despite the 7 year age difference.
