Am I mad for saving this R14 ?

This was problematic enough getting the bits for. The wings were genuine Renault parts sourced from France and the bonnet

again a genuine panel from Fleabay.

Not the usual rotten Pear and one owner from new.Still posed a few problems though but required no welding to the rear or floorpan.

Thanks for the comments guys , all of which I have read and taken on board but I am going to rescue this car . It will definitely be rotten underneath I know that but so far I have a friend who has found me a bonnet from france ,I have fou d a pair of gen renault front wings . I think all the other panels are repairable . I have some rear lights courtesy of Nigel Bickle .

The plan will be to strip it down to the shell and repair what we need to underneath .

It will probably be a massive weldathon but it has to be saved as it is the only Example left of the R14 ts regency . It was a UK special edition and they beer sold them other than the UK .

At a later stage if it's real bad I nay source a spares car from france and make a good one out of two ,we shall see :-)

as before, when you go to collect this car do you have to take your own dust pan and brush to sweet this car up with?

but if you do fix that up, then sir, i have to tip my bonnet to you sir.....

and as for mad, well mad is a very subjective term. perhaps special, or touched, or if you have some money eccentric would be a better term?

good luck.......

I never cease to be amazed with what some folk can accomplish resurrecting a car I would have dismissed as terminally fucked, I wish you the best of luck and keep us informed of progress, I'd love to see it saved.

I wish you the best of luck but as people have said I'd import on from France. Then again I've never met anyone whose profited from restoring a car.

As mentioned before anything metal can be reconstructed, ground back and dressed with filler, but sourcing trim is going to be a problem. And glass. And panels!

If you are absolutely determined, I think a Leboncoin sourced parts car will be required. Something straight-ish for 500 euro or thereabouts will provide you with the bits you will need in one mobile package. Then maybe you can properly evaluate if the UK car really is saveable. Worst case scenario is you have two utterly fucked Renault 14's and that ain't no bad thing to have on your CV!

Verdict - WCPGW?

You aren't wearing some weird distorting spectacles are you that makes you see a 246 Dino when you look at that R14?

Posted

I was thinking of that Ferrari Dino as well. That 14 will cost thousands of hours to restore and whilst a UK market Regency gets me excited I just cant see it being a workable project for anyone but those with deep pockets and an inexhaustible supply of time. And MIG wire.

Answering the question - er, yes, you are mad.... The metal in the pictures looks like the material used to make old fashioned egg boxes and if I was a betting man I'd bet that when you try to put it on a trailer it will break into at least two large pieces.

To answer the question.  Yes.

But it is better than being sane.

If you think it's possible and you have the enthusiasm, (which you clearly do) go for it!

Make sure you let us know when you start so we can all buy shares in steel sheet and mig wire suppliers beforehand

Good luck with taking this on I can fully understand why you want to save it rather than buy one from France as it's a UK car and a special edition.  As others have said though don't be surprised if it snaps in half when you try and load it.  How long has it been off the road and in that field for?
From what i've read the Renault 14 Regency was the highest spec 14 ever made:

well done finding that!!

send me a pic of that next to an MoT certificate and I shall send you a pint :)

Wow I may have some spares lying around if you do go ahead as I think I may still have some bits in the shed!

I love Renault 14's but will abstain from giving you advice, it looks pretty bad but it would be great to see it back on the road. Let's face it rationale is probably often not the priority when it comes to rare unloved cars and I have seen lots of projects on here where I have thought "wow you are mad"!

I'd imagine this one is in about the same state as Diana by now.

Nut job......

I hope you are under 25.......... Because otherwise you don't have time!

although Diana`s bodywork probably isn`t very pretty I would imagine the main structure is still more solid than that renault

Love seeing stuff like this coming back from the dead. So go for it. Just because you can.

That car is FUCKED.

You are about to launch yourself into a world of pain, penury and frustration, and when you're finished it'll be worth half a licked Twix to 99% of the motoring public.

I'd seriously spend the £3000+ it'll cost to resurrect this pre-cube on something that doesn't need anything near as much work.

But if you really must take it on, the very best of luck to you. I look forward to seeing pics the finished product in about 5 years time...

I admire your optimism (and your taste in cars) but that looks too far gone to me :-(

What happened to the RichieG and Cyanide Steve part of this thread. The bit where it was revealed that the whole of 'FSO CARS UK' were on the case...

Basically all bets are ON. Concours in 12 months... 8) 8)
