I only visited him once and it was around 1996ish but we were supercharging a national engine using the rootes blower of a scrap Commer TS3 we had bought from a quarry sadly now under the M6 toll.

Obviously it needed to be rebuilt first and so by some means, I can't remember how, we were put in touch with this chap from, I think, Bilston area. I remember it was the back of his house and the 305 was parked on the drive but chatting to him extolling the virtues of supercharging, he took us out in the 305 in which he used a Turbo engine but just replace the turbo with a supercharger from I don't know where but I'd guess the states.

What I do remember is that it had no lag and produced its power from low down so accentuating the characteristics of a diesel. I was well impressed!

The supercharged national? Well that wasn't much of a success. Quite early on in the running of this engine, the front bearings on the supercharger ran dry and disintegrated, causing the rotors to hit and bugger themselves royally. As it really was just a play thing money was not forthcoming to rebuild it so the idea was put to bed and we moved on to other things. Like putting a vertical dustcart engine and box into the back of a National.

Will, the cam differences I'm sure came from the recesses of a 306 site. I'm sure it came from a question the poster put up about tuning the XUD and what else could be done. There was talk of using a N/A 1.7 cam but the thread petered out before any answers were given on that front. It was one of those " now that's interesting to know. I'll remember that" type of threads. I'm sure it even gave part numbers for the different cams too.

Supercharged XUD = living the dream.

I wish my Volvo was fitted with a fully mechanical injection pump, I'm limited to chip tuning. Used to love playing about with turbo XUDs.

I've wondered about this..reckon you could take a vag tdi lump and fit td aaz pump etc to it?

I've heard about people fitting Land Rover TDI pumps to VAG TDIs, greater capacity for tuning and fully mechanical. I think it has to be a pump from a direct injection engine.

Hmm,the next door neighbour has a td5 disco...

He also has a shotgun-risk/benefit anyone?

TD5 has unit injection like a VAG PD engine sadly.

Should we have a diesel tinkering thread?

I was in Llangollen, realising I'd arrived a little too early and drowning in a sea of Morgans. How is that a week ago already FFS?!

If it helps any I'm roasting my bollocks off on a Van Hool Volvo with forced air ventilation and only one sodding skylight :@

It's ok andy. I work in a nursing home with temperatures set to 28c and can't open windows as old dears say it's cold. And doing lifting and moving etc don't help

I'm just about to set off on another road trip, to Skye and Raasay this time. I've almost started packing for it.

I'm taking my flamethrower in case I see any more fugging Morgans.

If I never see a mog private plate again it'll be too bloody soon. Stood at cashpoint with svm and one stalled and I swear the passenger was a Audrey Hepburn lookalike
