JohnK Posted February 16, 2015 Author Posted February 16, 2015 Fuel consumption isn't bad at all. I tickled the bottom of the tank with £40 of unleaded yesterday, got me 150 miles back and then did another 60 miles running about with a bit left. Apparently. Brimmed it for £70 this morning and apparently this is the range: I would be happy with 300 miles from a tank overall. It does have essence of my old MK2 Ford Mondeo though ... But I think the clock is my favourite bit, restoring some class - My indicator stalk repair has only partially worked. Headlights now work on the 'Auto' function, but don't work on sidelights or dipped beam. I've rang my local Jag breakers and I can have a new indicator stalk for £15 so will pick that up this afternoon and fit it. For anybody who needs Jag parts, I highly recommend EuroJag - they are local to me but do post out items as well, both used and new parts. I've used them plenty when I had my S-type and XJ40. 01325 722777
Partridge Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 That looks very tidy for under a grand. Nice one!
Pete-M Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Easiest way to tell the difference between an X300 and X308 at a glance is the indicators and side marker lights. Rectangular on the 6 pot, oval on the V8s. Also, X300s have chrome the full width of the bumper, 308s only in a kinda quarter bumper style.

I have never filled mine up to the brim, I normally just put in 30 litres for the week which is normally about right doing 130 miles to work and back a week, which gives me 21.6 mpg which is about right, I can get more on the motorway. I think the tank in these is about 80 litres but you will always leave some in rather than running it dry.......so if you get 300 miles out of 70 litres, thats bang on 20 mpg which is about right. cort16 Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 I thought the Fiesta key with the jag badge glued over it looked a bit crappy given the original purchase price.
Noel Tidybeard Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 from this angle they really are horny looking muthaflippers
Spiny Norman Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Lovely looking car, I doubt these Jags will never be this cheap again. Be careful with the keys btw, they're not the same as the Ford ones, they've got 2 extra 'segments' in them and as such they're a bugger to try and get replacements made. Also it's possible to 'decode' them from photos & that pic you've put up is enough to get a key cut that would a least open the door. xtriple Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Lovely car, well bought. I think the colour is spot-on as well and goes with the interior nicely. I had (of course I bloody did - I've had EVERYTHING if my posts are to be believed!) a 300 and a 308 and the 300 suffered from serious (though hidden) rot around the windscreen. Looked fine when I got it.... I do love them, there is nothing that drives the way a Jaguar drives for the money, and sometimes you can spend an awful lot more and still not have something that makes you feel so 'special'.... in a good way!
JohnK Posted February 16, 2015 Author Posted February 16, 2015 I've looked at quite a few X300's and some have had horrendous rust issues, even more so than some of the horrors I found on XJ40's when I was looking for one of them. The first X308 I saw yesterday had some pretty dire hidden rot that I uncovered, I checked this thoroughly and *touch wood* I haven't seen anything untoward. Time will tell though I guess. I will be keeping an eye on it regularly so that anything that does start to appear will be nipped in the bud at the earliest opportunity. It's a keeper this car!
Pete-M Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 My X300 had a crusty arch but it still looks the same now as it did nearly five years ago. Ace things. Nothing quite does things like a Jaaag. I really want an alloy XJR.
JohnK Posted February 18, 2015 Author Posted February 18, 2015 Update in the Jag camp - Big JK is borrowing it at the moment whilst the Omega is off the road. He likes it too. After copious amounts of John Smiths last night in the pub, we did an impulse buy following a recommendation from somebody we know 'of a decent motor' Big JK picks his new XJ6 4.0 up on Saturday - the bumper mounts will be sorted by then as it's sagging a bit at the moment. What more do you want for 500 notes? Just need to pop the new diff in the Omega and get it sold! Shep Shepherd, cort16, colino and 3 others 6
JohnK Posted February 21, 2015 Author Posted February 21, 2015 Currently playing 'fuel light roulette' with a 4 litre XJ6, a gallon of unleaded and 45 miles of finest North Yorkshire moors... Magnificent Rustbucket and Craig the Princess 2
320touring Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Currently playing 'fuel light roulette' with a 4 litre XJ6, a gallon of unleaded and 45 miles of finest North Yorkshire moors...With an 86l tank, the last 1/4 is essentially meaningless!
JohnK Posted February 21, 2015 Author Posted February 21, 2015 I'm back. I did bottle it and chuck some fuel in mind. More details and more pics when have had a cuppa. forddeliveryboy and Craig the Princess 2
dollywobbler Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Great stuff. Even the baggy XJ6 I borrowed for a bit last year was quite majestic. Cramped, but majestic. Certainly made me question Citroen's magic carpet ride, though I couldn't live with the horrendous thirst. Magnificent Rustbucket 1
RoadworkUK Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I really love these. My only slight criticism is that the interior went fully Ford after the 308 facelift; I rather liked the old XJ40 / X300 carryover interior. That said, the later interior was probably better in every other respect apart from nostalgia. Genuinely magnificent and the collection story was better than anything I've seen on TV this week.
JohnK Posted February 21, 2015 Author Posted February 21, 2015 To echo the above post - The XJ6 is a sound little car and an absolute steal for the 500 notes I exchanged for it. Inside it does feel very much like my old XJ40 and the straight 6 engine very much echoes this too. I do much prefer the straight 6 to the V8 I think, but jumping back into my XJ8 didn't disappoint - they have their own charms in very different ways. The XJ6 needs a few bits doing to get it upto scratch - needs a tyre, the drivers window wobbles a bit when it goes up so I will have to check the runner. It needs a good clean out and is extremely solid, there is a slight rust blister on OSR arch but it's just broken the paint and the arch is solid - I think it's possibly had a repair in the past, but nothing major. Big JK is in hospital recovering from his bowel cancer op at the moment, so gives me chance to get this up to scratch as he won't be driving for a few weeks. I can then get the Omega prepped for sale and advertised. Both need a clean! brickwall, HillmanImp, HMC and 3 others 6
RoadworkUK Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I think, overall, I prefer the idea of an XJ6 to an XJ8. I loved the one I drove (write-up here). Definitely on my inevitably never-gonna-happen bucket list. brickwall and Magnificent Rustbucket 2

Definitely on my inevitably never-gonna-happen bucket list. I have never driven an XJ6 but the reason I went for the XJ8 is because I prefer the dash. As that is what I will be seeing most of when I am in the car, that was the breaker for me despite the 6 probably being more reliable but I do not fear electrics*. *my wallet does though
Magnificent Rustbucket Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I think, overall, I prefer the idea of an XJ6 to an XJ8. I loved the one I drove (write-up here). Definitely on my inevitably never-gonna-happen bucket list. It is a well written article and I enjoyed reading it. I disagree though with the statement that, "By the standards of the time the XJ40 was a good enough car, but not one that pushed things forward." In fact the reverse was true: the XJ40 was a significant step forward in many ways over the Series III. It was an unashamedly modern car which outclassed the outgoing Series III in every way other than charm. It was also very well received - such was the demand for them that there was a long waiting list right through 1987, which meant that many buyers paid large premiums to jump the queue. Several car magazines proclaimed the XJ40 to be the 'Best saloon car in the world'. Of course, not all purists were keen on the shape of the car, but they bought old cars anyway and joined clubs and attended shows. Few of them bought new Jaguars. Their distaste for the XJ40 only became a problem for the model when the cars became old themselves and owners found their '40 wasn't too welcome. Much though I like them, the car which 'didn't take things forward', was the X300. It is a face lifted XJ40 - slightly re-engineered, and re-styled to look like a car Jaguar had stopped making as a mainstream model nearly a decade before. The X300 is a lovely, beguiling thing, but it faced the very modern BMW E38, and Mercedes W140. Still an XJ40 underneath, it was now an old fashioned car. Whereas the XJ40 could offer a competitive alternative to the BMW E32 and Mercedes W126, really the X300 sold on charm - which it has in buckets, of course. This doesn't matter a fig now the cars are old - they all roll together on the barging smorgasbord and timelines cross, but at the time it was significant.
RoadworkUK Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I disagree though with the statement that, "By the standards of the time the XJ40 was a good enough car, but not one that pushed things forward." Yeah, you're right. Not entirely sure if I know what I meant when I wrote that. It's like I was going correct, correct, correct, ABSOLUTE BOLLOCKS, correct, correct, correct. Magnificent Rustbucket 1
Timewaster Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 What an great incentive for BigJK to recover and get back out there. I love the colour, I love the black wood dash and I love the reg. BAD as in Bad Mutha Flipper!
JohnK Posted February 23, 2015 Author Posted February 23, 2015 I was kind of hoping that my old man would make the decision to keep the Omega and I could keep hold of the blue one (I would then sell my Escort and the Volvo when it's returned from loan). But no, he wants it. So the hunt may soon be on for my own straight 6 XJ to join the fleet. Can I make it 3 Jags in 3 weeks ?! Yes I will end up living on my own probably ... Magnificent Rustbucket 1

MarvinsMom Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 i love mine, an xjr-6 it is redundant now really since the arrival of the rover 75, but i dont want to part with it! its just abit sad sat out on the outlaws drive. when the weather picks up i'm going to run about in it on weekends, though its nsr wheel arch needs some attention and one of the wheels really needs re cutting and re lacquering. its a car that makes you feel like a million dollars!
