Zelandeth Posted October 20 Posted October 20 Skoda Estelle probably rates as the car I've owned with the second loudest starter. Loudest was the XJ-S, which both sounded utterly bizarre because V12 (almost as though it wasn't attached to the engine) and was silly loud. Really good to see another one up and running and close to the road again.
High Jetter Posted October 20 Posted October 20 3 hours ago, Yoss said: do wonder how loud this starter motor actually is. As owner of a FWD Triumph with exposed starter ring and motor at the front of the engine bay it might sound completely normal to me. That rings a loud bell. Had a few FWD 1300's and 1500's, exposed pinions (on sale at Longlife and other good accessory shops) were very noisy. Yoss 1
somewhatfoolish Posted October 21 Posted October 21 Even better if it fires enough to disengage the bendix but not actually start, so the starter does that mournful moaning noise. Yoss 1
ianbmw Posted October 21 Posted October 21 Rug Doctor returned (really impressed btw). Carlton didn’t do anything exciting bar start, complete journey and got home again. Will a Carlton 2.0i estate with a cat or a 1.8i saloon without a cat be faster! Let's get out the egg timer and check. Stinkwheel and Wibble 2

ianbmw Posted October 22 Posted October 22 At the risk of this thread turning into a running report of @Six-cylinder cars……not driven by him…..here we go. I had to go and assist a friend who had a flat tyre and battery on his Mercedes …..Fire up the noisiest start motor in the world! As already highlighted, the headlining shot, with bits of foam randomly falling and making reversing a PITA. In the ideal world it needs taking out, the old foam stripping off and a new cover. At the moment I have no inclination and I’m sure Chris isn’t overly excited with the thought of spending money on it until it’s proved itself. If it hangs around and is in the good books, me and the wife will do this in the spring. After being distracted by the model kits in Hobby Craft, I made a £2 purchase……we can see what bodge work is occurring….. before a trip to B&Q to buy the cheapest spray glue in stock……£10!!!!!! before across town to blow up some clapped out old Merc tyre and jump start said Merc The merc owner cannot drive at the moment, so we did what most greying men do best…..went for a coffee and brought Haribo! The Mini has a crook lock on to deter thieves……we just have an old fashioned key and barrel……most 90s car thieves are now retired and this old tech confuses the current tracksuit brigade…..so the Carlton was safe! Back home, time to get hire off glue! The material is buggered and to do a nice job, it all needs to come out. But with a dosing of glue and some pins, it’s not going to drop down and unless you look up in the boot, it passes the 10 meter test and means the rear seat passengers are not decided by falling foam. Assuming all goes to plan, this evening I’m going to pull the starter off and see if I can quieten it down…..because, I may of hinted this, it’s the loudest starter motor in the world. beko1987, LightBulbFun, adw1977 and 8 others 10 1
beko1987 Posted October 22 Posted October 22 I leave the Xsara unlocked alot of the time for similar reasons, if anyone tried to hot wire it the citroen wiring would make them fail, and I doubt anyone would steal it over anything modern and easier parked next to it. They might have tried and I've never known, but cheaper than them doing the window in to try 😂

ianbmw Posted October 22 Posted October 22 Had to walk the dog, took the worlds nosiest starter motor, took some arty photos …… came home and thought, what shall I struggle with this evening, ah yes, let’s pull the starter out by torch light. negative battery terminal off,10mm nut, 13mm nut, 17mm and a 19mm bolt, then a lump with the wacky stick and start out…….7 minutes from bonnet opening to me closing! A car designed by an engineer who has worked on cars and not just on CAD in uni! Into sketchy shed HQ for sketchy work bench stuff. The start works but is loud…..grinding noises. Pulled the starter apart and re grease and cleaned what I could. However the spindle has a far bit of wiggle at the back, so I’ve greased what can be greased and cleaned what can be cleaner and reassembled. It sounds a little better, but it’s difficult to say how much better it is until it’s bolted on and the bell housing can echo the noise. Or , I’ve made a working starter motor……a non working starter motor…..something like that, sounds like a job for tomorrow.w Coprolalia, Mrs6C, LightBulbFun and 10 others 12 1
Six-cylinder Posted October 22 Author Posted October 22 Well the Carlton Estate seem to be leading a great life without me! Thank You. Now summer is over several of my cars are nearly ready for the road. The Mini has just a few gremlins to sort like the leaking heater rad, but there is a plan in place. The Juulars worked their magic on the Saab 95 and that just needs a few bits like a indicator relay and the n-s rear brake checked that is making a rubbing noise. Soon it will be on its way to collect fish and chips as was planned for summer 2022! The Mitsubishi Sigma is very close and Saturday if it does not pour with rain it might be running again. I am grateful to all the Autoshiters who help me with my outrageous purchases and facilitate my habit. My eldest son is an addictions counsellor maybe he can help me! ianbmw Posted October 23 Posted October 23 Stop the press! Starter motor reinstalled……. It’s quiet! In fact, it sounds like new! Of course all warranty ends when this post is read, but what a transformation and all for the price of…….zero!
