Having boasted to rml2345 that both my new cars were in fine working order I immediately broke the S Type Jaguar before he got to me.

 

I went to fit Osram night breaker bulbs because the headlights were so poor and found the headlights both flopped around on there leveling adjusters. A fix on you tube was to add a screw to act as a manual adjuster which I have now done, but while main beam is lots better dip is little different. I had noticed with the lights off the headlights showed some cloudyness but with the lights on they are terrible so I will have a go at polishing them over the next few days.

If you go back a long way in my Notes you will find that I had to araldite one of the core plugs on my E Type to get it home 6 miles, the car has sat out of use ever since and now the summer is over I decided to tackle it. I asked a mobile Mech I use for Citroens to tackle it as it was going to involve getting under the car to get the starter motor off to change the entire right hand side set of core plugs. Unfortunately he managed to push one of the small ones though into the water jacket and was unable to retrieve it.

 

I bought a small magnetic pick up tool and some very small super strong rare earth Neodymium magnets which I thought I could drill a hole in, screw it to a junior hacksaw blade to slide into the water jacket and grab the core plug.

 

The new pick up tool broke trying to get it into the water jacket so I had a go making a pick up tool using a rare earth magnet. I tapped a centre punch on one of the magnets and it exploded in a flash! I have never seen anything like it.

 

I had some other magnets on order with a hole so I was ready to wait for them to arrive.

 

Mrs6C got interested at this point and decided to have a go at retrieving the lost core plug and has succeeded!

Neodymium magnets are very brittle. As you've found! Just becareful with the fragments. Breathing in or swallowing can do a lot of damage inside you.

That looks lovely and well done you for having the bravery to fix it. If I dropped something inside anywhere on any engine, I’d be panic stricken for at least a week

That's what fillings are for, to catch bits of errant magnets.

that's because its the wrong cassette- a Jaguar needs Chas n Dave and Al Murray tapes, any f00! kno that!

That S-Type interior definitely shows how much they were hoping for it to be a hit with the US market doesn't it...

God that interior of the S type takes me back - press day Brum Motor Show 1998, me and a colleague sitting in it thinking it was awful. Whilst I quite like the S type now I still think the early interiors are horrible. Rover got it so right with the 75 and Jaguar got it so wrong.

 

I think the Rev BJ once said it looked like what a Hyundai designer of the period would do if instructed to design ‘an old British car dashboard’ over a weekend, and that about sums it up.

 

Facelift cars have much better dashboards, both in style and quality.

 

Anyway, sorry to moan all over your latest car purchase Chris, enjoy it!

Some progress on the E Type today, core plugs fitted, carb jet diaphragms fitted and inlet manifold refitted and of coarse the backward step one of the heater hoses is falling apart and as it has different sizes on each end I have had to order a replacement. 

 

Oh well next week now before any more will get done........

 

Edit - in case you wondered why we have only done 2 out of 3 carbs today it is because I had already done the other one. It was pissing fuel out, fortunately it was the only one you can get to with the carbs in place.

Providing My Own Main Car

 

Now Oct 1999 and I had run the 1975 Mercedes 280CE for 2 ½ years, it needed a couple of jobs but I was ready for a change anyway, I always liked Volvo 740s so while I made up my mind what to buy I bought a 1988 740GLE Auto Estate. Mrs6C asked why I had bought that home, but after six months when I was ready to sell it she asked to take it over! It went to Mrs6C father and ended its days in Wales at 260k miles.

 

 

 

 

1979 Ferrari 308 GT4 The words of the motoring journalist Steve Cropley stuck in our minds, if you can buy a Ferrari do it! 18 years ago we bought the best 308 GT4 in the county at the time for Mrs6C and we still have it. Just 30,000 miles from new and a fully functioning car we last had on the road 2017.

 

A replacement for the 1975 280CE was a stunning 7 years old Mercedes 300CE, I was so pleased with it but it only lasted 7 months as we needed the money towards buying a flat in London that cost rather more than expected.

 

Another stop gap needed so a 1988 740GLE Auto Saloon was purchased from the paper. The owner complained that the heater always sent cold air to his feet and had even taped up the heater inlet grill under the windscreen. I started using it and immediately got the cold blast to my feet so closed the foot well vents, lightbulb moment because I sold them new  it was a natural thing for me to do but the previous owner had never read the handbook!

 

Now looking for a new car for myself Mercedes W126s were on the menu but I had trouble finding one I liked so looked at a cheap damaged Lexus. That car was not for me, but Mrs6C gave me permission to throw the budget away and get a proper 1994 Lexus LS400 because she liked them so much, which I did. It was super smooth powerful but I never loved it.

 

1963 Herald 12/50, it was for sale at a show at a price that a visit to a cashpoint would complete the payment so we could take it home. We still have it in bits and plan to reassemble it one day.

 

With Mrs6C working abroad I preferred a Mercedes again and got a 1992 300TE 24v to replace the Lexus. I liked it very much and that last 1500 rpm of the 24v engine gave such a growl to an otherwise benign car.
