Pre 1985 motor: What can I get in VGC for £2000?

Volvo volvo uh huh, uh huh. Otherwise a w123 Benz, Saab 900. Plenty of Jap stuff I'd love to get my plates on, Legends, 300ZX, Supra mk2s.

Not much decent British stuff unless you go older and hard to find and upkeep the Frog/Italian stuff. I'd like a Pug 504 estate but the chances of finding a rhd in restorable nick are zero.

I do like those late 240 Torslandas!! I just passed one about ten minutes ago in the next village, with a big FO roof rack, it just looked totally indestructible.

Liking that Escort but I have a nagging feeling tjat 2k is on the wrong side of 'investigate previous repairs'.

Gr9 suggestions everybody, I'm thinking that the stuff that interests me a lot is now all scene'd TO THE MAX for a good example:-/.

OSF popularity premium is unlikely to ever hit the Mk3/4 Escort cabriolet.

Rover P6 3500 would be my choice.

For £2k there's a whole world of unpopular tat out there. Stuff nobody wants but that is in decent nick. Go for the shit model of anything available in the early 80s and you'll probably find a minter for a couple of grand. You'll end up with a hateful car but you'll have this lot jizzing their undercrackers.

The Torslanda is just a base model 240 estate with elec windows and other gubbins removed, I read somewhere that they were produced originally for use in northern Scandinavia and the removal of elec equipment was supposed to make em more reliable.

Need to investigate more then, there's loads of stuff that's not 'scene' and in my eyes is desirable. The only downside is some of it is rare. Toyota Tercel is another I have a raging bone over at the moment...my Levin cost fuck all (and I paid over the odds for it) I suppose because it's a bit boy racer/chavy but I like it, balls to what gormless Scene victims think.

My top 3 would be;

Triumph Dolomite 1500 / 1850

Rover SD1 2300 / 2600

Saab 900

Not sure you can get a pre 1985 Scorpio, or 205 GTi come to that.

Earliest 205 GTi I have seen was a 1985 B reg, and Scorpio's on a 1985 C reg.

Classic rangies are demanding good money new, especially the pre facelifts >1985

A Fuego would be brilliant.

Even an allegro would suit me. Been looking at a 1978 brochure for them this afternoon.

Fuego being based on an 18 I assume it won't have very sporty handling but you won't see another one - and that's what it's all about.

I'm sure if you managed to find one you'd have at least £1k change too, they're rare but still dirt cheap.

The last road legal fuegos I've seen went for £1500-2k, so cheap for a rare motor, but I wouldn't call them dirt cheap. Station had one a year or so back and iirc got around £1700 when he sold it.

£1500 would get you a mint condition Skoda Estelle that has had the head gasket done

I've seen a couple for sale as I recall at similar prices to 18s, but perhaps I'm thinking of ones that need work.

I think there were a few about on an A. £2k's worth is likely to be a POS even if you can find one.

A really tidy and looked-after GS or GSa could be had for that money, if you can bother to do a bit of rust-proofing every August they're very tough and reliable. Plus as outrageous under the skin as anything this side of a 50s Tatra.

Well, you coulda bought my 1984 Charade ! negotiate with Junkman, he will do a deal !!

I reckon you could get a half decent Triumph 2000/2500 for that (not a PI), or Dolomite 1500/1850. Also Allegro or Maxi, if that's what floats your boat. An early Sierra (particularly an early GL or Ghia with those awesome wheel trims) was also be in range, as would a Mk5 Cortina.

The Mk3 Granada / Scorpio range was launched in mid 1984, so you'd need a very early B plate one to be pre 1985.

My top 3 would be

- Rover P6 V8

- Rover P6 V8

- Rover P6 V8

You can still get one for 2k, if you play it smart.

Do these not now suffer from Jesse Pinkman tax?
