Oh wow. Only watched a few minutes but I can smell that factory all over again! Did work experience there in 1995. Had a full tour of the production lines, and assemmbled dashboards for a day. Still love the looks of the LDV 400.

Now I know why the dashboard of my '95 Pilot was so shonky.

Sadly the factory is completely flattened now.  But my Glass Eye still weeps.

Considering their sole product for most of their existence was a 1980s refresh of a van designed in 1975 which incorporated even earlier bits, I think the lifespan of LDV, 1993-2010, was pretty impressive.

 

If Daewoo hadn't gone tits up the Maxus would have been launched in 1999 or 2000 and a bigger version to replace the Convoy would have followed (the Maxus started life as a JV with Daewoo Europe in the mid 1990s).

 

Plus I believe the Maxus lives on Chinaland, you can buy new ones in NZ or Aus.

We can go further back than that;  If DAF hadn't gone bust, what is now Vivaro/Trafic/etc, would now be 200/Pilot series.  Just sayin' like...

Didn't know that, what was the link between (L)DAF(V) and Renault/Opel?

Sherpa/DAF had designs drawn up for a new model range and guess what?  When push came to shove, they had no money and went bust later that day.  So somebody else, another firm with an understanding and subsidising Government came along and snaffled the designs.  That was the first Renault Trafic.

You mean the just-replaced model, not the 1980 Trafic, right? If you mean the latter my mind is totally blown.

They should have made more of the excellent LDV Cub.

There was advanced plans for the Bedford (nee Isuzu) to be fitted with the Perkins Prima in a joint Freight-Rover and GM Bedford tie-up too.

They do in New Zealand apparently.

 

Made in China, respected in Europe and used by the British Royal family, according to the website linked to by Stuno above. Unless it's a spoof. 

 

What's NZ $29,995 in £?

£14,614.30, so bloody cheap for a van, but I suspect even worse quality then the original maxus

To buy the cheapest Transit add $30,000 to the LDV base price

Loved the vid, I spied N109 and N110SOC. My first

 

lorry after passing my test in 2001 was a Leyland Daf 55 17 ton rigid, N108 SOC.

I did a magazine photoshoot there a couple of years ago. The security bloke let us in and left us to it. No buildings left except some with transformers or somesuch in but you could see on the ground where machines had stood. Around the perimeter edges there were a few odd portakabins left and more than a few van doors and assorted bags of LDV labelled clips, bolts etc which had just been chucked on the ground. I picked up a few blank LDV vin plates from a puddle!

STOP IT!  My Glass Eye cannot take anymore.....I loved that place and its products.
