These seem to go for cheaps. This one sold for less than 500 notes (granted, it's got no prop and no ECU).

'Rollin', in my five-point-oh with the rag-top down so my hair can blow.' Can't do that in a Lexus.

No prop, no ECU and I think one other thing is missing...

Yes it absolutely is, just find a local small garage with a bloke who knows about American cars, and preferably is a member of one of the clubs.  You'll know you're in the right place when you see a 70s Firebird and a Chevy pickup project....

Or just ask the Junkman.

Note: Yes, it is possible, but it isn't free. To the contrary, it costs money. Lots of money.

There isn't a handle on the outside of their front door?

Is that from the days when BMW names gave an indication of the engine size too? I presume its a 5 litre? How thirsty are these? Still would.

Yes, yes and very. It's about exactly what I was looking for a while back before I got bored and bought something else

Haven't read through this thread 'cept the last page but Lexus 400's fall into the category. (Sorry if someone's already said).

Wasn't the BMW 750 a V12?

Hey Dugong, does it have to be v8 or is v12 allowed?

Surely a GS400 is the way to go for a shiter, it was a strange choice to buy one over a LS400 in the first place so it's quite rare and only those Who know anything about cars know that it's a V8 plus older Lexus don't really have any points for style or class that some older BMW, Audis or Jags have.

This Lexus is on the blue at  £1,195

EFA - Price drop!

Those GS300's are below most people's radar and so you'll get the best one in the world on this budget. Shirley a £500 disposable snotter would be more fun.

Edit: Bollocks- we didn't get the V8 over here :( Only the 3.0 straight six.

Soarer V8 with blinky dash problems.

They go into limp mode when the dash starts blinking (well mine did) which is excellent fun* when hooning along in the overtaking lane.

I'm not about to be murdered.  The Dodge motorhome has been sold, and not to me.  I still think left-field Detroit is the answer though.  Take away all those Krautmobiles with too many/not enough pots, and the horrendously-overcomplicated and plastic-topped Lexii, and go to the home of the Proper Engine, usually attached to a Proper Gearbox and if you're really lucky (you'll need to be on this budget) driving the Proper Wheels.  You know it's the way to fly.

Where was the Alpina ish black 750i when I was looking a few months back? Local, too. Budget now swallowed by something with 4 pots.

Suspect Jon has bought the 500SEC as he has gone quiet because he is trying to fight off the women (day of the dead style).

Surely the cheapest, shittest way into V8 ownership is the Jaguaar S-Type?

One of the most expensive ways into V8 ownership is a W126. Great cars when they're working but when they break they can cost serious serious money. My old 500 SEL had needed a new metering unit not long before I bought the car. I paid 1/3 the price of the metering unit for the car. Also, I've never driven an old V8 Mercedes with a decent auto box. The gearbox always seems to be either slippy or thumpy in them, often both.

I drive a Ewing spec 1980 380 SL fairly often, it's shit. The V8 sounds lovely in it, those old M-B V8 engines do sound great, but the rest of the car is a disappointing experience. The gearbox is really lousy and considering the 3.8 it isn't even slightly quick. Steering is also shit.

It's not a battered and abused old shitter either, it's done under 110k miles and gets a full service from either M-B or an M-B specialist every April before it goes on the road for a few months. It does around 1500 miles a year and then goes back into storage.

The Lexus V8 isn't all that as they have a habit of knackering exhaust valves on the rear most cylinders. That's often not helped by people buying LS400s and not being able to afford to service them.

Rover V8s are cheap and simple. Strong once they're set up properly and not that bad on fuel when they're running right. My last P6b cost me the same to run as an 850 T5.

Jag V8s are strong provided the oil is clean. Timing chain will rattle on any one that has been neglected. That's enough to kill the engine. Same as the BMW V8s in that regard. I prefer the Jag V8 as it is less needy of revs. Always found the BMW V8 to be weak on low down torque.
