Q1: Chips Away Q2: detailing

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any experience of Chips Away? I have a large number of chips on my modern that need to be addressed -more to prevent corrosion than concerns over appearance. Aside from results being at the mercy of the operator I'm concerned that the repair won't last - a few jet washes (not that I use jet washes) or a few really thorough polishes and the repair will thin or 'drop out' which leads me onto my second question...

What is 'detailing'? Is it simply cleaning and polishing a car really well or is there a strong element of hiding rather than attending to paint defects? For example, the Dolomite looked very fresh when I bought it but looks a bit sub standard now the seller's 'professional detailing' has worn off. Doesn't matter as it's a project car but I'm inclined to think that if anyone tries to sell me a car that's been professionally detailed in the future it might be best to avoid it or anticipate disappointment.

Thanks

Any good detailer would try and repair defects. Light scratches, scuffs and faded paint can be polished away but there is a limit to what can be done. I think a 'valeter' is more likely to hide a defect rather than repair it.

We got the local Chips Away guy in to fix a scuff on the Mrs' Bini. He made a right good job of it, paint match is perfect as far as I can see, and it looks fine a few weeks later.

A lot of detailers use waxes and polishes with 'fillers' in them.

They do as they say and can be used to mask certain light damage - until it is either stripped off by shampoo, or just naturally wears off.

"Detailling" in the context of this forum involves rattle cans from the pound shop, copious amounts of wet and dry paper and half a can of Mr. Sheen.

Heh, probably not far wrong. When my mothers Volvo V50 went for it's last service it came back all shiny and clean on the outside. However...

^ Lazy bastards!

Reminds me of a mates cars, in a way. He is a detailer.

Except for under the bonnet. Under there is all honest dirt and splattered polishing compound.

Just bought some Chippex stuff as Ben's car has gained a scratch on it. Mine has more. Seems like an option to ChipsAway and that sort of thing. I'll update when I can be arsed doing it.

I heard that one a few times for things like boot carpets and mats when I valeted at dealerships, i can hand on heart say I never did it myself as I like things done properly

The wheeler dealer guys rattle canned a whole parcel shelf on a 205 that was the wrong colour.

Mega bodge or wot?

To be honest, I did that when trying to sort out some faded patches on an old Triumph 1500FWD, worked a treat too. Not entirely sure I'd classify it a bodge but sometimes a necessity.

FWD Triumph...? Black rattle-can...?

STEP AWAY FROM THE IMPENDING MEME!

Round here, it involves 'rain'.

How dare the valeter who gets allowed 15minutes to do a service wash not clean all the door shuts . 😃

I always thought detailing meant making sure you got the filler roughly straight before you went in for the kill and got a 5 year old can of primer out the shed.

A few years back I got chips away to come look at the stone chips on the bonnet of one of my motors. He said it would be cheaper to get it resprayed as they charge per chip, and it adds up quickly.

Get them round for a quote and make your own mind up.

How can they colour match so precisely out of the back of a van?

I got a 'chips away' friend to spray a grille off an Astra which he did, but the paint 'chipped away' so quickly and wilfully
