Me, on this day in 1987, in a car park, surrounded by shite

The 12th of August, 1987, Stourport-on-Severn, Worcs... a much younger / slimmer / coiffed 16-year old me, leaning on a stranger's nearly-new Merc SL while my mate takes a photo :-)

27 years ago... blimey. Just check out the number of Allegros, plus those two Golfs - the one "under my arm" with that hideous (Zender?) four-square-lamp grille that you used to see everywhere back then!

Some really interesting stuff in the background. Hunter top left?

Fiat 126, Morris Ital, Talbot Samba, Vauxhall Victor....

I bet if you went back to that same carpark now the ratio of 'normal ' everyday cars Allegro,Golf etc to the Mercedes and 7 Series would be reversed. Does that mean we're all better off ,or that Mercs and BMWs are nowhere near as prestigious as they once were?

Incidentally,I too know exactly where I was 27 years ago today- Milton Keynes Hospital, my oldest daughter was born at 15.30 that day( and I had a blue 4.2 XJ6 B593NLL in the car park- not mine ,a company car). I was 23, had hair,a waistline and the eternal optimism of youth.

You lost that bet.

Does that mean we're all better off

Actually, the standard of living has been in decline since the late Seventies,

which has vastly accelerated over the past decade.

Just look at how much more colourful it is than a modern car park

On this day in 1987 I would have been a 20 year old laddie driving my Cortina Mk5 2.0GL CHG 614Y somewhere.........not sure where but somewhere. What I cant really get over is how old fashioned things seem when I look at my photos from around that time.

I know its like 27 years ago but when I think back it really doesn't feel it. Oh and were we better off then??? If I speak as a 20 year old in 1987 compared to a 20 year old in 2014 then yep....without a doubt.

On that day, I was nine years old and most likely riding my new racing bike around the country lanes of east Kent, something which I did a lot that summer :)

I was 6 then, why does it seem like simpler times, thats why i drive old snotters, to get away from it all!

On this day in 1987 I was 14, and probably roaring about the fields on my KH100 or X7, along with about 20 other kids.

I'm about the same age as you! There seem to be a few of us; is it a shite age or a Shiteists age, I wonder?

The prestige cars - big Mercedes, BMW 7 Series or a Jag were much more prestigious then because they were so much less attainable. That Merc SL would have been the price of a semi in much of the North of England back in '87. And you could only get credit to buy one if you didn't actually need it!

I would have just turned 17 and would have been on probably my second driving lesson in a C reg nissan bluebird if memory serves me right. My mum at the time had a red Belmont. And I had my very first car sat on the drive a harvest gold austin 1300. Wow I could live the dream. Never did get to drive that 1300 on the road as it was as rotten as a 70's bmc thing could be. .

I was 18, had a mk 2 escort and, as it was the glorious twelfth, would have been grouse beating on the first day of the season.

On this day in 1987 I was about 9 months from being born.

The modern car park looks so bland in comparison to the '87 one. The mk2 Fiesta looks like something from another world in it.

In August 1987, I had not long bought my first house and was running a 1937 Morgan and a 1982 Cortina 2.3GL; I was about 4 stone lighter and still had hair.

I was a skint new dad back then with a crumbling Zephyr 6.   I am a skint grand dad now but still have crumbling cars.   My VW T25 was registered this week in 1987 too...

On this day in 1987 I was 17, owned a Holbay Hunter and worked as a FLT driver during my summer holidays.

That's what it looks like when I park mine (but red) it makes it easy to spot when I've forgotten where I left it

In a similar vain I would have been 11 this day in 1987 just about to go to high school. As it's my brothers birthday we might have been doing something but more then likely arguing :-)

I was 18, and my weapon of choice that summer was a red MG 1300 bought with no MOT for £60. Although I then spent another £100 having welding done.

I was waiting for my son to be born (later in the month was his first appearance) and driving a company Montego 1.6L. Also had a new MG Metro (D740 something or other) that I quite liked. It helped that a really good friend was sales manager at Wadham Kenning in Plymouth and I got an awesome deal... sold on a few months later and made a profit!

On this day in 1987 I had only just passed my driving test and I was blasting around the Scunthorpe area in my N reg mini listening to punk tapes and dreading my impending induction into the RAF. Ahhhh, happy care free days.
