James Mays Cars of the People

I have a sneaky feeling this was actually written for Clarkson, but he couldn't be bothered to do it, and as may wasn't doing another series of 'James & Oz get pissed', he was given it.

Sounds plausible.

Plenty of opportunity for sneering and self-aggrandisement. So yes. Possibly written for Clackhorn..

I didn’t even know about this programme and was blissfully watching a DVD of ‘The Big Lebowski’ while you lot were getting worked up about another old motor getting trashed by the top gear crew.

Though if we all kept quiet and did only what others agreed with this would become a very lonely place indeed...

Can people please stop whining about the Lada getting destroyed? If it offends you that much, refuse to pay your license fee and \ or don't watch it.

Hardly in the spirit of 'here' old chap!

Whining is part and parcel. Bit like moaning to pals in the pub! It is just part of the wider conversation surely?

I really enjoyed watching it, not offended by any of the content and will watch the rest, its better than that 'Car SOS' shit anyways......

I enjoyed it. Thanks for the heads up, I didn't know about it.

There were a few historical inaccuracies I could be petty about but meh.

It really didn't, Jon.  I've driven one, and one is enough - they are SHIT!  ;)

I enjoyed it. Wasn't going to bother watching it but had nothing else to do and I'm glad I did.

Can't say the Lada destruction bothers me. Similarly the R4 and 2CV later in the series. They built millions of them and theres still loads around so it really doesn't get me all hot under the collar and frothing at the mouth when a tv show smashes one up.

Just out of interest like, how much would it cost to start up a new channel on Sky.....?

Maybe called..... Errr, dunno. How about

'Autoshite. Drive it. Live it'

or summat.

If we all chipped in a quid or so it might* work.

Who would you have as a presenter?

(Opens popcorn, sits back to watch......)

Dugong/Dollywobbler double-act.  There is no other option.

For me, a lot of stuff I knew already, rehashed in a not-very-interesting way with lots of waffle about the short Austrian with the 'tache. Ha could at least have given Hans Ledwinka a passing mention...
I'd hoped something with James May's name on it would be better than this, and I say that as an avid TG fan who doesn't give a fuck when they trash a rusty old snotter.
But...as I've said many times in the past, the Top Gear franchise isn't a TV version of a car magazine and isn't aimed at the likes of us. I doubt I'll watch the next one.

I didn't watch it but I'd like to think I'd have been offended if I had.

Who do I complain to?

Good choice of alternative viewing!

I enjoyed it. The Lada destruction was worth it as people who watched the program hoping they'd blow something up had to watch to the end to get their reward. Some may have learned something in the process.

I'm hoping the next edition involves a game of dominoes using 1000 Rover 800s all laced with high explosives. In Wolverhampton.

Just watched it. Thought it was pretty good. Lada destruction was pretty much entirely pointless, but a damned good mainstream telly programme. Even my wife enjoyed it. Personally, I'd like to learn a bit more about each car and how it drives and I also think he was entirely wrong about the Fiat 500 - they're utter shite. But certainly not bad viewing at all.

I don't think I've ever seen destruction of a car on Top Gear (or any of its spin-offs) that hasn't been entirely pointless. It's never (or very rarely) done for an actual reason, or to demonstrate anything interesting. It's just in order to appeal to the sort of inbred mouthbreathing pikeys who post videos of themselves smashing shit up on YouTube COZ ITS WELL LOLZ INIT.

Yeah, it was an alright programme otherwise.

Sean of the Dead was on ITV 2 at the same time and they smashed up a Megane. The BASTARDS. Don't see you up in arms about that you bunch of hypocrites.

You didn't even get to see that crash as Sean had gone inside the house to hit Philip with a cricket bat.

I just watched the programme and thought it was quite enjoyable. The big thing for me was why are the BBC using Range Rovers? Shirley there must be a cheaper alternative to that?

Controllable air suspension and horizontally split tailgates.

I think that should narrow down your list.

That's the normal excuse, and difficult to argue with. But in this case it was an old type Sport,ie no split tailgate and presumably a bit tight in the back for a cameraman.

Well I enjoyed it, little I didn't already know aside from the Italian labour disputes making BLMC look like a disagreement in the lunchroom as to wehther they should use skimmed or semi skimmed in their coffee.

Actually that was probably one of the reasons they did go on strike

Yeah - but massive, stupidly low profile tyres in Russia? You'd have fitted the 16"s, surely?

I watched it and the same as some others I didn't learn that much, but as someone else has said "it's not for us*"

I don't really care that they dropped the lada (I once used one to block a parking spot on purpose for months) I just don't get why they did it if was meant to be a factual* programme

Mrs_Pillock did a little cheer when they dropped the Lada.

She spent years being driven around in one as a teenager so felt entitled to celebrate the destruction.

I thought it was great, just that the wanton destruction added absolutely nowt to an otherwise good programme.

It's like some uncontrollable urge the BBC have. "Lads, what this needs is some SMASHING!!11 YEAH!"

Posted

You need the 18s to clear the small brakes, I think the one they had was fitted with the bigger brakes so 19 or 20" wheels.

Not sure what the rental options in Russia are though...

Can't really comment on the space (never sat in the boot) but they do have a split tailgate.

Sport's don't have a split tailgate in the manner of proper Range Rovers and even Disc3/4s ,they have an opening window like most big estates and 'SUVs' it's one of the reasons I won't buy one ( that and the fact they're unreliable and cost a fortune to repair,at least the ones I can afford!)

I didn't watch it and won't be bothering. It was always going to be target audience for the Clarkson wannabes and spark interesting* debates.
