Typical Autoshite Dilemna

Look. I trust you lot a fair bit when it comes to cars of a certain type/colour/level of shite. Mad I know but you are all decent peeps and the AS'rs that I have met have been ace.

I need some opinions on my latest dilemna.

I have a 1976 Toledo with a TR7 engine and running gear fitted. It is MOT'd. I used to own this car before the TR7 conversion and it is a potentially sweet car.

The body is sound and only has two issues. There is a dent in the n/s sill. It has been there for years, as has a small ding in the lower rear valance. The bonnet is brown. The bootlid is rusty but I have a NOS item. The interior is clean but the carpet will ideally need replacing as it is faded. The paint work is poor. No rust but it is shit and would need a full respray. The engine and transmission is spot on. Nowt to worry about there whatsoever.

I have taken the two drivers side doors off to strip down the shit paint from the sill and the door shuts. They were spot on apart from a couple of small finger nail size holes. Now rust killed, filled and painted in red oxide primer. The doors will just need refitting. Tyres are excellent and branded.

As it stands the car owes me not a lot. The going price for a solid non-MOT'd project is around a grand, maybe a tad more. This should see around £1200 as it is MOT'd.

I have the lovely ex-Wilko220 Rover 75 2.5 V6 auto which is a beauty and is a keeper. The Amazon which is also a keeper. I have the Sprint Project which I may or may not continue with. Need to think more about that. The MGF which is also a keeper.

Now. The problem.

I have seen a 2.5 V6 MGZTT - manual. It is mechanically spot on and has had a huge amount of money spent on the oliy bits. The downside is that it is described as being a bit tatty. It has a dink or two here and there. The interior is ok but the headlining has a couple of holes. Otherwise it is ok. I could swap the seats out for leather and sort the bodywork issues for myself with little real hassle. The price is £800.

I would have to sell the Toledo to finance the MGZT, but am torn about making the decision.

Thoughts folks? Help me out here.

If you're keeping the 75 then my vote would have to be for Toledo over ZTT. Why have two very similar cars in the fleet when you can have two which are so wonderfully different.

Plus, I suspect that there's far more potential money to be made out of sorting the Triumph and (eventually) selling it on than there would be from doing the same with the MG.

Still, I can see why you're tempted...

The ZTT that's already had a lot spent on it could still mean that there's big bills ahead too.  I'd give it a miss and keep the Toledo.

Don't worry about being tempted, you're just mentally playing with yourself.  We all do it.

Meh - my ZT-T is mechanically sound, belts done (2 months ago), good tyres, interior spot on (new drivers cover) and 11 months MOT. Full on 190 as well - awaiting airbag crash sensor to sort out airbag lamp and brushes for cooling fan. Will be around that money. Want some pics?

Pictures always good. Irrespective.

Yep, it had the TR7 engine fitted a couple of years ago. Neat job too.

There should be some kind of therapy available for this sort of thing.

that has a certain air of the Q-car about it! :-D

Keep the Toledo. You've got a V6 Rover already, so why have another one in a track suit?

The consensus is keep the Toledo. You have had it that long it would be a shame to move it on,with all the time and work put in when it is not quite finished. To get something so similar to what you have.Keep and enjoy.

Toledo. You know it, and as has been said, you have a 75 already. Also it looks great - especially with the AS version of a Capri black bonnet!

Cheers guys. Sam,  that looks like a bloody neat car. Thanks for the piccies.

Ok, further thinking required with a clearer head but the points about the similarities of the V6 are reasonable.

Am I being very suspicious in wondering why the MG is up.for sale cheap when it's had all the expensive jobs done?

Have to agree with the keep the Toledo massive, the car obviously means a lot to you and would be pretty nigh impossible to replace.

Ok. Toledo staying.

Thanks everyone. Sorry Sam.

I think you may have dodged a bullet there mate. Stick with the TR7/Toledo combo, it does sound like it has the making of a real beast of a car

Well it's all there apart from the paint tbh. It's all road legal apart from it being on SORN.

Right choice, as said above why sell the MG thingy after spending loads o' dosh on it.

For me the Rover 75 and the MG ZT or too similar, so if you are going to keep the 75 keep the Toledo as well.
