dollywobbler Posted July 23, 2014 Author Posted July 23, 2014 Hairdryer unnecessary in this heat. Lots of glue being left though. I'll try Fairy. WD40 wasn't too impressive, brake cleaner worked sort of. It turned into smeary, gluey mess instead. I have also repaired the boot lid latch, adjusted the windscreen wipers and jets and am now planning to tackle a small patch of surface rot on the nearside sill. It has resisted various pokey things, which is good! Still solid then.
cms206 Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 All we use is thinners in a spray bottle; spray liberally, use an old cloth or an old towel and rub off. We're doing it on 6 month old coaches just now to rebrand stuff for the Commonwealth Games and it's A-OK with those.
cort16 Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 cms is right there's no pointing in pissing around just use thinners, make sure you wipe it all off and be ready to give the car a good polish when you're done.
trigger Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Kettle of hot water works perfectly. I used to do a lot of sticker removal for living. saucedoctor and forddeliveryboy 2
Noel Tidybeard Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 seemingly whoever did the grill didnt butcher the original hence the red trim under the lights when they facelifted these with the grill a couple i used to work with bought one new and the were given the option of no grill- so their car had small grill and long indicators
KruJoe Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 joe - makea wid da parts Hairnet - English translation: Joe, you have the parts he needs, don't you? Sorry, the bits DW needs went to Phil(busmo) as long ago as Shitefest 2012. They're stashed at his gaff waiting for the right project.
panhard65 Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 When I took the stickers off the maestro van I used a toffee wheel which done an excellent job of the ones I removed. The same can't be said of the stickers that had been taken off before I got it as they had left a horrid mess behind. Thinners should do the job if all you have left is the glue though as long as you do it straight away.
Micrashed Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 The flag is coming off. It has unfortunate UKIP/BNP connotations. Id be more worried about Meibion Glyndwr turning it into: Still, thes shape of 200 are lovely, we used to have a 216 GSi.
dollywobbler Posted July 23, 2014 Author Posted July 23, 2014 Right. I'll get on it straight after this brew then! 90% of the stickers have gone now. Mind you, the paint seems utterly borked. It's like it's been used for greenlaning or something.
dollywobbler Posted July 23, 2014 Author Posted July 23, 2014 seemingly whoever did the grill didnt butcher the original hence the red trim under the lights when they facelifted these with the grill a couple i used to work with bought one new and the were given the option of no grill- so their car had small grill and long indicators The red trim was yet more bloody stickers! Some sort of kevlar-look red stuff that had faded pink. It has now gone.
forddeliveryboy Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 This makes me angry. It is our national flag and will only be hijacked by the right wing if we allow it to be. If you don't want a union flag on your car, that's up to you, but don't use some sort of national embarrassment as the reason. Echoed here. What next, 'can't drive a car made in England'? Will the Rover badging and grille be replaced with Honda stuff? Little wonder our indigenous industry has vanished. Appreciate the St G's cross has been hijacked for now by extremists but let's not allow the Union flag go the same way - it may only have a few months of life in it anyway! I think this points to a serious problem of identity and confusion within the UK, perhaps we all need a bloody good shake up.
mrbenn Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Mind you, the paint seems utterly borked. It's like it's been used for greenlaning or something. And probably will be again in the not too distant future chaseracer 1
Noel Tidybeard Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 ^^^ they're not green lanes they're normal B-roads
Lacquer Peel Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Fuel consumption of a 2.5, power of a 1.6. Vince70 and barefoot 2
Jim Bergerac Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Good to see yet another R8 on here, in spite of the erroneous grill. Pretty sure it has been lurking on ebay for ages and ages unless it had been through another owner in the meantime.
dugong Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Right. I'll get on it straight after this brew then! 90% of the stickers have gone now. Mind you, the paint seems utterly borked. It's like it's been used for greenlaning or something. Knackered, cheap in car in 'shit paint' shocker! Junkman 1
cort16 Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 We'll just change that rocker cover no-one will suspect a thing Junkman, Cavcraft and Vince70 3
Lord Sterling Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Looks nice Ian, what spec is it? GSi/SLi? If its possible, you could bung up the holes temporarily as i was tempted to do on the borrowed 820e I had a few years ago: Re: Union flag, I had this on my G-reg Sterling: Junkman and saucedoctor 2
dollywobbler Posted July 23, 2014 Author Posted July 23, 2014 SLi. PAS, eleccy front windows and mirrors, manual sunroof. Most of the sticker gunge has come off nicely, but the two stickers on the back door have really left their mark, and the bonnet is still a mess. I'll get back out and get scrubbing some more, then maybe I can update my capers.
dugong Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 then maybe I can update my capers. Would you like a pizza with that? Junkman 1

Acetone if all else fails, but check a small area first.
Jim Bell Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Nothing good ever comes of flags. We'll done for peeling off that celebration of conquest, empire, and subsequent absolute abandonment. That includes YOU semaphore !!!! dugong, cms206 and costadelglosta 3
dollywobbler Posted July 23, 2014 Author Posted July 23, 2014 Carb cleaner seems to be getting there! Pretty knackered now. Oh and my wire brush did actually open up a hole in the sill. Bother. Should be an easy repair though.
saucedoctor Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Austin Rover did those grille kits, and dealers would fit them. I saw a few on the road that were obviously fitted @ Charles Hurst - they were wonky! TRW 1
Mr Livered Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 The flag is coming off. It has unfortunate UKIP/BNP connotations. That's a barmy thing to say! That flag belongs to everyone in this country - unless of course you take the view that UKIP and the BNP are somehow more British than the rest of us. Personally I think that the open minded and moderate are at least as entitled to display that flag as right wing nutcases are. forddeliveryboy, alf892, Cavcraft and 2 others 5
chaseracer Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 It's a union flag not an English one. Celebrate the union. We scots do. You had a choice. We were invaded... Ian, that Rover is ubershite; top bombing, sir!
KruJoe Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Wheel envy here, it'll look nice cleaned up on those Rover 45 Minilite-alikes. 15's though, right? I have loads of spare original 14'' steels if you want some... [pic of my engine] Fuel consumption of a 2.5, power of a 1.6.Only the autos. My 5-speeder gets into the 40's mpg up hill and down dale, which is quite impressive considering how well it shifts. The ex-Chompy_Snake automatic I'm breaking was apparently "damn thirsty for what it is".
Lacquer Peel Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 I had an R8 416SLi manual a while ago, seemed very thirsty for what it was.
KruJoe Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Must just be the 400's then I've photographed pez reciepts with the odometer reading ever since I've had it, I really should work out my actual mileage RobT 1
