Looking at all the rubbish everywhere could this image have been taken during the Dustmen strike of 1978/79 ?

Otherwise as the van has a Kent registration it could be anywhere in the Medway towns..

An image search suggests that it was taken in Brick Lane E1.

Just off Brick Lane - I think it's Cheshire Street. Also in the film Lock Stock. If not there one of the other side streets.

Likely the dustman strike - in those days was still a big garment and rag trade area hence all the business waste backed up.

Interestingly ...(well to me anyway 🤣)...

The van is not a Morris Quarter Ton van even though it is based on the Morris Minor - but a 'badge engineered' Austin 6cwt (also done in an 8cwt).

In the bonkers world under supremo Len Lord - BMC's policy was to provide Austin and Morris with complete commercial ranges to satisfy their competing dealer networks. Even though the combine had been in existence since 1954  Austin-badged variants of the Minor van (and associated pick-up) were created to fill the range out after the end of Austin A35 van production in 1968.

These have new Austin badging and the corporate Austin 'crinkle-cut' radiator grille installed... but were otherwise identical to the standard Minor commercials, and were sold as the Austin 6cwt and Austin 8cw until around 1973.

And people wonder why they went bust...

So even though it looks ancient - the van is not actually that old -  a 'new' post 1968 model

Of course whilst BMC were messing about sticking new badges etc on an old van - Ford had in 1968 introduced their new Escort van...a really different era...

And by the time the Morris/Austin stopped production the Escort had been available five years. Superceded by the Marina van.

Mad old BMC.

Thatcher was not PM during the winter of discontent, it was Jim Callaghan. This fact is usually forgotten by a lot of those in the media.

The Heath government also had problems. This may be then. Again it may be a local strike. The Council here was Tower Hamlets.

71 or 72 Mustang (possibly convertible?).

Heath had gone by the time that van was less than  4 years old. It looks a lot older than that. Especially as the trunnion has collapsed.

I’m guessing that small car in front got away quickest ( being light ) , but no2 is definitely going to win the 1/4 mile..

Bedford did a great job making those not look like a TK.

Double bumper look is cool.

Talking of Morris Minor vans, here's a PO one in Broughton, Hampshire, 1937.
