Buying cars you really don't need.

Why do we do it?

I've got a Galaxy as a family bus, a company focus, an RS Sapphire I never ever use and a spitfire that needs re commissioning.

So why am I soooo tempted by a cheap 4x4 that has popped up locally?

I have no real use for it, no time to get it mot'd and limited space to store it.

I might ring them up about it later. :-)

Well I wouldn't be daft enough to go and buy an extra sofa that wouldn't fit in the Front room or get a secondhand washing machine to put next to the one we already have..

But as its is a car, then it seems perfectly logical.

I can't be the only one. A quick look around here proves that.

I believe you have answered your own question...

It must be nice to have no car at all but need one, money to spend and all of auto-ebay-boncoin-tree to choose from. So easy to buy, so hard to sell.

I really don't need three cars. If I manned up a bit, I could use the 2CV for almost all of the motoring I ever do. That'd be a bit boring though. So I own three cars.

I do believe you missed the point with my reply.....which proves the point..

I need all four cars.

  • The van is a van and therefore is the most needed four wheeler. Plus it's the only thing that will tug the caravan with no complaints.
  • The Leon was gifted to us and the better half is very much attached. Plus it's always there just working and up for some merciless spanking when I need to carry more than the two who will fit on the bike.
  • Cortina, sort of turned from daily driver into a (long forgotten) project car. Everyone needs at least one hopeless old crock.
  • Clio, chip oil chugger 'cos non of the others offer much in the way of economy.

The eleven motorcycles all have a different purpose too though too be fair three of those are spares bikes. Numerous engines lay about the place, some bike some car though I think I'm nearly rid of all the spares for vehicles I no longer own which means I'm defo on top of things.

I have a reliable, economical and tidy hatchback which is all the cars I ever need. I also have a reliable, tidy and briskish convertible 2 seater which is a luxury. I am also drawn like a moth to a flame by a BMW 750i or perhaps a Mercedes S500 for no logical reason, got off lightly so far as Ebay bids not been man enough but pretty close.... It's only a matter of time.

I understand perfectly the want for stuff in no way justifiable!

BIG MISTAKE: eventually dissing spares of a car you got rid of years ago usually means you are going to acquire another one almost immediately.

I went through an era of "saving" chod and ended up with the shitemare of 8 cars dotted around at one point which was completely unworkable. The neighbours got angry, the postman delivered near daily dvla paperwork and I could never remember what I was insured on and what had lapsed.

It was nearly always a waste of time as the cars I'd saved just got killed by the next owner anyway.

I saved a 40,000 mile FSH one owner cortina crusader after the 95 year old owner died and it faced weighing in by the daughter. Didn't need It, couldn't afford it etc but bought it anyway and spent time and money tidying it and moving it on at a loss.

Next owner brush painted it matt black, ran it for 6 months then banger raced it "cos it needed plating on the seatbelt mounts"

Another cortina - a mk4 GL with 59k.. I actually bought off a racer, mot'd it and sold it... New owner wrapped it round a lamp post less than a week later.

Realised I was wasting my time trying to save shite so now I only have 2. A daily and the cortina S.

It's sort of inbred into me. I just see a car I like, realise I can (or can't) afford it and if it's the former, I buy it! I love going on ebay, going to all vehicles within 25 miles and seeing what comes up. My usual search cuts out classified adverts so it's a nice change occasionally to include them.

Random searches throw up some great stuff, it's how I got the 205 and saw the SAAB, plus I've also got my eye on something really ace that I found yesterday, plus I've bought quite a few oddball motors from doing so.

Don't anybody try to sell me a Citroen XM...

I now own four cars. I've had three before - usually briefly - but this is a new high point, chodwise.

I can't give a sensible answer but with four cars and six land rovers, I know I need another one. Preferably something large, prestige and auto (and sub £1000 obviously).

I'm going down to four cars this month, because they're the ones I can justify. I'll have a diesel boring car for the Mrs's commute (Mazda) and one for my everyday use (Saab). Then one old car (Minx) and a camper van for hols. Hence the letting-go of the Merc and the Renault 5. The Merc is spoken for; the 5 will be next (anyone?).

Also, and I'm sort of hoping it's not just me here, I see a car I really like and because the price is right I'll just buy it anyhow. I swear to God if I won the lottery, my drive would be ram full of Corsa Bs. I'm honestly more than happy to buy as many cheap ones as I can.

I am the Battersea dogs home of cars and am seemingly terminally unable to trim my fleet in any way, shape or form. I've tried. Failed. Am now resigned to it all. Until I get something else.

Like DW, anything I've bought since the 2CV is a bit unnecessary. A 2CV really does do most things very well, it's just nice sometimes to have a little luxury and be able to talk to passengers on the motorway :-)

I need more cars!

300E any use to you? It runs, mostly.

Agree with what's being said. There's no hope! Agree with what Cortina Dave says though. Have spent a fortune over the years keeping cars going only to eventually get rid and find they've been scrapped soon after for minor reasons which I would've sorted if I still had them. Am currently down from twelve cars to six...which common says is still five too many. There's always a danger of the number going up again though, for no legitimate reason.

I know that feeling well

I own 5 Rover 800s. I don't need them at all but I like them, I like the fact that they are rare, unloved and that I own them.

I've got a feeling that I will be adding to the collection at some point. Whether it'll be an 800 is yet to be seen, but I know I will be buying more 800s in the future.

Well I've 4 fiestas, new one my wife mainly drives, my daily and 2 in garages. We're both tempted to get a van or 4x4 but we just don't have anywhere to store it. There's a rule of no more stored on the drive after I killed a capri by j st leaving it there...

As someone who used a broken collarbone as an excuse to buy a Jag then I don't understand the question. It is of course the perfect time of year to buy a 4x4 just now so carry on...

I sold a perfectly good, working car and bought a broken one. Does that count?
