New svelte Peugeot shite - Update

Seeing as I reached 50 last year I've been meaning to treat myself with something just a tad more glamorous than the 405s. Ideally something with a bit of grunt, a bit of style and which doesn't cost the earth (i.e. cheap).

So I bought another Peugeot.

Must admit have had my eye on these for a while.  No one seems to want them or pay much for them - they surely must be at the bottom now and start to gently appreciate if you're prepared to look after one.  Trouble is there seems to be a lot of rubbish about and I'm not 100% sure about this one, but more of that later.

First impressions after two days (even though I used to sell these things new when they came out):

It's a fourteen year old French car, built in Italy.  Lots of things are falling off, trim especially

The steering is incredibly light, much lighter than I remember it.  Very different to a 405, although am just starting to acclimatise to it

Ride not bad but not as good as the saloon I had.

Very quiet, very refined

I'm already frightened of the thing going wrong, may keep it as a 'summer car'.

Of most immediate concern is the cooling, the water level seems to be dropping far too quickly.  I'm already hoping it may just be the rather manky looking radiator and nothing more sinister...

Let's see if we gel over the next few weeks.

They're still one of the best looking mass-produced cars of modern times IMHO.  Loving the oxblood leather too.

Was that the one for sale in Ivybridge with mega miles?

No I had to go to Sarf London for this one, it's a V6 auto.

Lovely! These are criminally cheap at the mo, great spec with the v6 and auto with that colour and trim. I cant see these staying that cheap for long once the ropey ones have dried up.

From a time when a coupe didnt have to look ugly, aggressive, or have stupid wheels and tyres to be a coupe.

This is a panini farina design isn't it? I love his cars and his toasted sandwiches.

I had a 2.0 one years ago that I loved looking at but wasn't as keen on driving it. I bet the v6 is a much better prospect.

Love these, and those seats look ace! Hope it turns out to be a good one.

I've got the urge for one of these soon. Might make one my next target. Remember having one as a demo when I worked at the rental place. Silver with red leather. Damn good looking thing, but unfortunately was a 2.0. so didn't go quite as well. Would love a go of a V6, would have to be manual, though.

Can you get these in HDi diesel flavour?

Yes, but only manual so no use for me!

I've always liked these, ever since they came out. I liked how they blended the 406 saloons signature features with a genuine coupe body so well. A great shame I feel non prestige true coupes are going the same was as the Dodo and Woolworths

With only a little bit of work you could be the envy* of everyone in Essex.post-17414-0-31353200-1398466921_thumb.jpg

Seriously, that interior is lovely, why is it only French and Italian cars that can use coloured leather without it looking tacky.

Thank you for that, I've been sick on my keyboard.

It didn't help that they followed it up with the 407 Coupe, which had all the style and grace of a beached Basking Shark

Apart from the plankton catching front end, those 407 coupes look pretty smart from some angles, especially the rear quarters.

Those 407 Coupes are okay. I looked at them before I bought my BMW and the 2.7 turbo diesels are great value but the nearly 500 quid a year car tax is a bit off puttiing.

Lovely. The mechanicals on these are superb although the electrics can be, let's say, French.  Regarding loss of coolant, radiator corrosion is a known weakness on the V6. Mine was replaced ~3 years ago despite the car leading a relatively pampered life in a dry garage and it's W reg like yours.

Be sure to tune into the 406 coupe owners forum which is the font of all knowledge for these beautiful underrated cars.

That makes sense, the radiator looks pretty ropey on mine and looks like it may be the culprit.  Are they particularly expensive do you know, parts and labour wise?  Looks like it may just pull out upwards but I suppose that's being naively optimistic.

I read in that forum that the auto box on these V6s is a ZF, much better apparently that the one they put in the two litres.

Well, had a blast in it this morning; roof open, sun out and going through the gears manually.  Have to say I'm hooked, what a toy.  Looks like a keeper with a slow fixing of the (many) niggles

I dug out the invoice from December 2010. The rad cost £175 plus VAT and I was charged an hour of labour to replace it. Sorry, I don't know for sure if this was a genuine Peugeot part or copy. I suspect it came from Euro Car Parts.

Oooohhhh lovely. One of these is definitely on the 'to own one day' list. What sort of mileage can you reasonably expect of the V6? 20-25?

Very good work.

Fatha Shitpez has been searching for a low milage lpg converted coupe for quite some time. With 0% luck thus far. I'm absolutely unsurprised.

My saloon with the same basic mechanicals is the later ES9J4S version with ZF auto box. MPG depends on how you drive obviously but also on the amount of cold starts and length of run. I used to get 25mpg driving 4 miles to work.  On runs with some stop/start with mixed roads it's normally around 32 to 34 mpg. In the 90s I had several Vauxhall models with the 2 litre 8 Valve and the mpg of the V6 is only 2 to 3 mpg worse when driven in the same way.

I was amazed driving it back 200 miles on the dual carriageway at about 70mph, it must have been doing mid thirties.  Wouldn't expect anything more than early twenties around the Devon hills though.
