Take My Cherry

The famous* AS black Cherry is available again.

post-4559-0-61298800-1384621294_thumb.jpg

It's had six months with me, covering my daily commute and a handful of local shows.  In fact I've used it for almost all my round-town work, it's ideal.

1986 Nissan Cherry Spirit 1.3 GS, 3-door hatch, in black.  Model N12.

Scroll back far enough and there's a thread by MrDuke offering it; I was tempted because it was the right price and just what I needed at the time.  I don't really need it now, and I've bought Rawy's Volvo 940 which I also really didn't need, because the third car in the family is a blob that I could surprisingly live with for almost all purposes.  But, you know, once you've had an old Volvo, it's an itch you just have to keep scratching.

Anyway, about the Cherry.  While I've had it I've treated it to a better set of tyres courtesy of dave862 of this parish; a new exhaust, cambelt and service.  It also has a lot more tax and test now than it did when I bought it, and a mere 3,000 miles more on the odometer (now totalling 44,000).  It has the OEM radio and cassette deck, both integrated into the dash (yes, two units) but neither appears to be working.  It also has a glass sunroof, which does work!  It would stand a little bodywork, as the front valance lets it down a bit and there are some sill repairs that could be tidier.  The bonnet doesn't hold a shine for very long either.  The interior is much roomier than you might expect, very light and airy, and the whole package is a positive delight to drive.

I'm talking myself out of selling it now!  You know what?  If I could, I'd keep it, I like it that much, and it takes a lot for me to say that of a small car.  Sadly, living where I do now, having three cars is a bit excessive.

I don't think I'm being unreasonable offering it back into the AS family at what I paid, four hundred shiny smackers.  Form an orderly queue at M6 J36.

Please, please, please will someone buy this, preferably in the next few minutes. I've got enough stress in my life without divorce papers adding to it.

GLWTS, it would be cruel me buying this and running it into the ground with the commute we do of around 250 miles a week

Thank you both for your support!

On a serious note, I have the original dealer plates for this (sorry Eddy!!!) along with a mint HBOL, which I can forward to the new owner (or the present one, if he decides to do the sensible thing and keep it) just to add to the already irresistable appeal. Oh, and don't forget the gen-you-wine JNC stickers, which automatically make it 78.3% cooler.

Seen this and it's ace. Someone buy it please.

I have nothing more to add to this except to say it looks superb, nice to see such a tidy original one as these are getting rarer, good luck!

The present owner would point out that he's already taken it to four shows where he could and would have displayed the original plates..... lol.

I'm not expecting it to leave me this weekend, which is fine; and then I'm off to Foreign Parts for a week, so really, it'll still be here in December.  So yes, please do send me the items!  I'll perv over them by the light of my sunburn for a few days then they can go in the boot for the new custodian. 8)

And yes, the stickers are still present; you're right, they do add to the coolth.  It was a tough decision, ok?  I don't want to sell, I just need to have less cars about me.  Having said that, rather than give it away I would just keep it.  At least then I'll still have a classic for next summer's shows.  Trouble is, there's nowhere I can put it for the winter.  It's outside on the street now, and not even in front of my own house.  The Volvo isn't even in my street!  So you see my problem.

Somebody buy it, garage it, pamper it.  Please.  It both needs and deserves that.

This is crying out for an Alfa 33 1.7 boxer conversion.

Was the supplying dealer AFG Southend by any chance? I used to see loads of old Micras, Bluebirds and so on with their plates, and the YNO reg would fit.

That looks lovely! Unusual in black, it really suits it. Had I not taken a dip in the autoshite used car pool recently I would have been interested.

This looks excellent out of interest how much tax and test does it have?

Would have bought it in a heartbeat.

But I too have just paid for another AS car.

No, 'twas Gemini Swindon.

Also, I do hear that CA18ETs look right at home in the engine bay 8) . Forget about the 1.5 turbo they originally specced - the blocks change hands for stupid money (I believe the ECUs fetch around £200 on their own).

I wonder if my son would accept a Cherry rather than my K11 as a fettling car?

Mind you (unhelpful comment time) I think I would need to sell the bike first and currently its a horrific box(es) of parts.

I'd just like to mention that J36 is very close to J35 where I spend many weekends and not that far from J29 really where I kind of live.

Photys of the Cherry from last time

Ca18DET won't go in without a bit of work! :(

It doesn't need it, the Nissan/Datsun engines from this era are great.

Absolutely right, it doesn't need it.

Tell you what, if I even thought a potential purchaser was going to do stuff like that to this car, I'd shut the door on him and he'd never get it.  Ever.  Not even cubed.  It's that good as-is.

In answer to the serious questions, the MoT was August or September (it happened with so little drama I barely noticed!) and the tax, I think ran out at the end of August so the next time will be the end of Feb.  Without going out to the car to look (it's dark now) but I know I only did it for six months.  It's only November now so there's plenty of both on it.

Micrashed: give him the K11 and you have the Cherry.  Sorted!  And yes, I know you're close by... ;)

Thank you for the link to the original thread, bbtw.  I was just too lazy, or inept, or something, to figure out how one does that.  But I've just re-read it and relived all the tension and excitement!  The photos do it justice, thanks to MrDuke for those; and it's pretty-much unchanged from those.  I didn't realise it had tipped over 42,000 before I got it, so I've done less than I thought!

On the plus side the lad likes it a lot.

On the down side, I really do need to sell on the airfix kit then if he is going to have that.

I need to have a chat with someone over the Airfix Honda first. Sorry I cant be more decisive than that right now Eddy

Lovely. I passed my test in a beige cherry 1.3. Any chance of a pic of the dash for old times sake?

On second thoughts, better not. I've run out of garage, drive and shed space.

How much for the mk1 Escort estate in the background, just out of interest? :)

The Escort is one I spotted one day as I was driving around back streets.  It claims to be an 1100.  If so, it's a miracle it's survived at all, as it would have been a very unwanted spec from about the time of its first MoT.  It certainly does appear to have survived pretty much unmolested, which is great, so I thought it deserved to be immortalised with another survivor!

Drum, if you follow the link to MrDuke's post, there are dash pics in that.  I haven't taken any, sorry.

I've just checked the MoT and tax, given that it's now daylight.  Tax, as I thought: Feb.  MoT: I got a bit of a shock, it was way back in June!  I had Martin (my classic-friendly one-man garage) bodge the exhaust for the test, it was some weeks later that the back box fell off.  Just in time to scupper Drive Your Classic To Work Week, lol, I had to do most of that in the Tacuma.  Cherry did get to do two shifts though, so it wears the sticker with pride on the back screen.

:?

Was one button press away from sending the PM.

Will have another chat with the management and see what the opinion is about ebaying off Airfix and getting this in the driveway before I end up having my knackers taken off with a fret saw.

Sending a PM doesn't commit you to anything... ;-)   ...yet!

Are these genuin jap tin or made by wor lads'n'lasses in the land of nukie brown?

S_A: take a guess! :P

FFS: honestly?  I have no idea.  I think they were making the Micra over here, but whether they bothered with the outgoing Cherry I couldn't tell you.  I just assumed it came on a ship from the Rising Sun.
