My land rovers - the '64 SWB's turn

Recommended Posts

Two of my shite cars are in hibernation so it's land rover time for me. Don't know if old series land rovers count as shite here but I'll put some pics up of mine anyway.

Bought this BL era series 3 swb off eBay with no mot.

front.gif

Horribly blinged up checkqueer plate, spots and white gay spokes with white walls. Shoved it in for an mot and got two pages worth of fails.

I could have just replaced the rear cross member but as I was offered a half chassis on the cheap I decided to chop a bit more off.

nochassis.jpg

Extra bolt holes in the tub shows it wasn't on its first rear cross member.

I kept the body on to help line up the new half chassis.

New chassis offered up

Lots of other work on the hubs, brakes, swivels, springs etc which I'll gloss over.

Eventually got it roadworthy

Made a truck cab out of a hard top bought for 1p on eBay.

Once I had one I needed more.

Bought from the local scrappy.

Chassis was rotten, no brakes, holes in bulkhead, bulkhead feet dissolved, etc

Bodywork off.

tuboff7.jpg

Rear cross member replaced and about a square metre of new metal let into the chassis in various places.

This 2a is now sporting* a fork lift's Perkins 4203 power* plant but it started life as a 6 pot petrol. This means differences to the bulkhead and big front brakes. Thebrakes are a bastard to set up.

I like making brake pipes.

Check out the state of that bench.

Made this out of four pieces.

Had to do lots of welding to the dumb irons and bulkhead. The wiring loom was shagged so I'm halfway through bodging a replacement. Mot passed earlier this year so it's been on the firewood run.

Nice one Hum_Drum. I bet you feel like the proper Yarkshire faaaarmer hooning these around the countryside. I noticed one of your pics was your avatar. Nice.

There seems to be a rather healthy amount of these Landies around Birmingham.

One of my former jobs was working for a company that supplied the metal to JLR, whilst in the warehouse I found a wing for one of these Landies. It had some writing on it which I think was pointing out defects on the wing.

I loved my old Stage 1 V8, even more when I removed the intake restricters for real POWAAH

Almost all of my cars are photographed over an oil stain.  Giving the car its first service is a bit like the mechanic's version of The Plank with Eric Sykes.

The ride from the leaf sprung Landie wasn't great and the 12mpg (20 on a long run) wasn't marvellous either, I'd love a very early Defender 110 which would solve both those issues but keep everything else.

Nice Landies there sir.

I like the idea of an old LR, but don't think I could live with one, an old RR is probably as near as I'll get to one.

My B-I-L has 3 or 4 series Landies, the only one currently on the road is a 1973 diesel, but damn is it slow, noisy and draughty .... There's an older v8 converted SWB that should be hitting the road next year after a massive restoration, I really should have done a thread about that one.

There's a lot to be said for the proper Landy!  Top buying young man, may they entertain you for years to come.

My mate in Southport embarked on a bit of a Landy spree a few years ago, after he bought himself a V8 Disco2 to replace his Shogun V6.  First up was a blue 109 with the van hardtop, which had a TVR V8 under the hood.  I got to drive that one...:-D  followed by some I only saw in photos (we left the country soon after) beginning with a red 88" V8 which I think was a 2A.  He had two or three others too, seemed to be building up quite a fleet, but I haven't seen him for a long time now so I don't know what's happened to them all.  I do hope he's still enjoying them!

I'm collecting another one tomorrow but it's in several boxes. It's a series 3 109 with what the seller thinks is a Perkins diesel engine but when I went to see it I didn't recognise it. I'm no expert but it definitely isn't a 4203. Might be a diahatsu or something. He bought it and completely dismantled with a view to rebuilding on a galv chassis then lost interest so mega barg for me.

I've also got a td5 disco which is definitely shit if not shite. It was a cat D write off only the seller failed to mention it - tosser. Fortunately I found out before handing over the cash. It's got dents in the most weird places like above the rear side windows.

Nothing rots like a land rover chassis and I've had the metal glue on the disco's for its last mot.

So that's six land rovers with currently 50% of them roadworthy. Updates if anyone's interested in due course.

  • 3 weeks later...

A trailer load of the latest acquisition. The v5 came through and it turns out it was a series IIA 6 pot petrol but that engine is long gone.

Anyone who has a td5 disco will be familiar with this sight

That's the abs, traction control and hill descent warning lamps. The airbag light can be fixed with some underseat wire wiggling. The '3 amigos' are less easy to get rid of.

Where are you? I bought an amigo turning off box instead of buying the new hub dealer man said I needed. He was wrong anyway, knackered brake discs was triggering the amigos.

I think it's a sticky rear caliper that might be causing mine. I've had a go at it but was defeated by a rounded bolt head. Managed to free up the slider pins with it still on the car so I've ignored it in the meantime. Please tell me about the amigo turning off box. I'm in angus, Scotland so probably >300 miles from you!

It was laid up on a farm for several years before I got hold of it. I fitted new shocks, exhaust, brake bits, seat, sidelights, new clutch master cylinder, etc and all the bills hit at the same time as the PAS leak so it went on eBay. Bought by a German bloke so it may have go abroad. The export marker says 'Y'. It was a bloody good 'un, it ran sweet as a nut. Mrs. PBK wouldn't lend me the cash to get it all sorted as she hated it. I was annoyed for quite some time.

I remember working on a TACR1 when I was a mechanic in the RAF.

Slightly off topic but there was a seat at the rear of the body with a communication tube into the cab. I must admit, I preferred the TACR2.

6x4 range rover? Shame they weren't 6x6. All that's left of the communication tube on mine is the hole in the back of the cab.

You sound like an ideal candidate to come and recommission mine...
