Go on,go on, go on, get a Citroen Xsara 1.4 Hatch, Not the people carrier type one. I can't fault mine, Ultra reliable, can't find any rust, 44 mpg most of the time if no air con fitted, quiet on the road and parts are cheap.

Agree with you about the Clio too as I hated mine and it just rusted before my eyes. I am surprised on how rusty Ford Focus and Ka's are in the same era as my Citroen and I love Fords.

Ka's came with factory fitted rust. One of the few modern cars that rusts worse than a 1970's BL product, and the Almera is £200 over budget & laden with electrics to go wrong. Need a few days to go serious chod hunting, as I prefer to see what I'm buying first hand, but all of your advice is greatly appreciated thanks :)

Daihatsu Sirion? DW seems to be getting on brilliantly with his.

Absolutely seconded. Not sure I've ever owned a car that was so cheap to run. Just watch for rust in the back end. Nowhere in particular, just most of it. They're hard to find at all, let alone within budget though (unless covered in crap drawings it seems).

Will keep you guys posted on any possible shittermobiles

If your no good at welding I can recommend an old A4

I've had mine for 4 years and it's still goes well been trouble free and not a spot of rot anywhere,

I went for a poverty spec 1.6 so that did away with a camshaft plus 8 valves plus a turbo so less to go wrong.

You may as well get the bus.

You don't seem to want anything!

Almera and electrics going wrong does not go in the same sentence.

That car with the possibly replaced clocks/untrue mileage, who cares?

View and drive it. For 'sock drawer money' you need to buy on other strengths.

If my budget ran to £600 perhaps for something like the Almera, but swmbo distrusts all the electric gubbins, all she wants is a small car, with sod all spec and a working fag lighter, and pref no sunroof, she's the main breadwinner between us, so she will be stumping up most of the cash. Anything much bigger than Fiesta sized she doesn't really like. I wouldn't mind a Mondeo, the FiL has a nice X reg one, but she's driven it and says its 'too big'. We are off to look at that white Felicia next Monday.

Have you tried being a bit more fussy? Obviously with £400 burning a hole in your pocket you should be as closed minded as possible and reject several good suggestions because someone on the internet told you Fiestas were shit/you're scared of blue cars/65mpg is not enough/my sister-in-law once went out with a bloke who has a Nissan Micra and his eyebrows met in the middle.

Shame about avoiding the Frenchies, too. An early 1.5 derv 106 is just what you want.

I had an S reg one for a year. Nothing went wrong. My mate owned it for about six years prior and it was great for him, too.

Ran on veg and fresh air. Slow as shite, but always returned 60+ MPG and had no electrics to speak of - otherwise I wouldn't have bought it.

The thing is, we haven't got the cash or time to travel around doing 'collections' etc due to the strange hours we work, and we rarely get a day off together, she works early shifts, and I do lates, so most days we see each other for maybe an hour at best, and we've had a Fiesta, and it wasn't a bad car, just became an absolute money pit very, very quickly. There used to be tons of chod dealers around here, but now most have all but vanished, and it's bloody hard work finding a car at the 'gutter end' of the market that she actually likes. A 306 would probably be ideal, the SiL used to have a poverty ZX which was a reliable car, which is related, and both would be ideal, it's just finding one that isn't a zillion miles away. I have spotted a 306 1.4 mk1 for sale in Leeds & my dad is going to give it the once over for me, so you never know. If I had time off work and a bit extra I'd be up north in a flash, and would no doubt find something easy for £400 with rent & rates, its just Suffolk is crap for chodhunting

What about an X-reg Astra, 1.6 16v 5-dr 'CD' model, few scrapes on the paintwork but has a fantastic stereo instead, 145k miles, has been totally reliable for 9 years, comes with 12 months ticket and a new cam belt, £400. Engine bay a bit grubby. Has got electric windows all of which have worked perfectly for the aforementioned 9 years.

A Hyundai Accent will do all that you want, but is extremely grim; anywhere else this would be regarded as a drawback, but here it is probably a plus point.

Worth stretching the budget a tad for?

I can second this - my ex had one in "Graduate" specification with no electrics whatsoever. Only issues I remember were a broken clutch fork (welded up for twenty quid) and a balljoint. Good fun to drive too.

I have a corsa B Envoy 1.0. It has: No electric windows, no power steering, no ABS, no traction control, no airbag, no aircon, no central locking and does 55mpg. Slow as fuck but who cares when you can laugh as the prick with the Lexus stands behind you in the queue at the petrol station kiosk and winces as you hand over £7 for your weekly fuel cost and he's just had to put £70 in the tank. Almost nothing to go wrong other than body corrosion, the odd sensor and keep the oil fresh otherwise the timing chain will start chapping it's bollocks off.

Another vote for proton here as they are pretty cheep cars and drive ok.

Also Mr Bs £400 squid ashtray as owt with 12 months mot has to be worth a punt.

This won't end well, I'll put money on it. There's never been a 'wanted' thread on the Internet when the person who started it either listened to advice or bought a car from a fellow forum member.

Obvious starter is the Megane 1.6 with MOT till april

next might be this Proton in 'the morning after the night before' piss yellow

Triggs I hope to save up a bit of cash to buy that in the spring, and I'm being serious mate. It would be funky as a second car, but I don't think swmbo would like it somehow as an every day car, especially as its a 60 mile commute for us both, she goes to work in the morning, then drives back, then I drive it back to work for my late shifts, it wouldn't be fair doing that to a potential classic, same goes for Eddie's Cherry, which is very similar to one my uncle Bob had in the 80's and wasn't a bad car. Got Monday & Tuesday off next week to do some chodhunting, wish me luck. Anyone know what days the 'shite' sales are down at Mannheim just outside Clacton?
