Top drawer Sierra shite £ COLLECTED AND RE-HOMED!

Stick it on Barrett's driveway and sorn. New screen on the insurance, s/h radiator from Ebay. Bonnet hinge either modified with hammer or replaced by one from a breaker or Ford. Should be able to get it back on the road for a lot less than £500 - hopefully, it would be a huge shame to see this one die.

Windscreen should only be fifty quid off the insurance surely ? Doesn't affect your no claims. Scrappy/sierra forum should see a replacement hinge for pennies and £3 worth of rad weld should appease the radiator for a good six months at least.

Mind if I put this on the Sierra forum as well? I'd really hate to see this one baled.

Arse.  This day just gets better and better... :-(

Windscreen could be a bastard as it's heated so might be awkward to get hold of - although presumably a boggo one would do.  Bonnet hinge I can't see being a major issue.  As long as the roof didn't get dented it doesn't sound like it's beyond hope.

Unfortunately I'm not in a position to rescue it at the moment though, especially as my only road-legal tow car is being a cock at the moment.

I can't believe it's already a year since I slithered it through the snow to the MoT station.

My mate had to do an insurance claim for a heated screen on his frog face Scorpio last month and Autoglass had no trouble finding him one and fitting it the same day... So maybe not as hard to track down as you might think

Well it's worth a go I suppose - you might even get one with all the heating elements working, rather than just a narrow strip in front of the driver's nose.

New standard tinted windscreen should cost about £120 fitted   a new heated one will be nearer £300

A standard  Twin cam Radiator  should be about £60

fit a separate oil cooler for the autobox  like this

and i have a bonnet hinge you can have for the price of the postage

As already said screen will be easy enough, i got from off the shelf from pilkingtons for a mk5 cortina was only £110

I'm gutted to see this as I wanted the car myself, the screen will be claimable on the insurance for £75 excess, it won't affect your no claims, the rad might be a issue but I'm sure a specialists would be able to recore it if needs be, I used to use Colchester Radiators and they could pretty much fix anything.

Sorry to hear its been in the wars! I feel it's definitely worth someones time and persevereing with, the glass thing should be doable on the insurance, £50 excess and the dismal b5 passat I owned last year was sorted with a new screen and this is way more worthy of a new screen.

Hope Gary/ one of the autoshite collective manage to sort it. If anyone is thinking of buying it DO IT it's a lovely old thing

I've edited the thread title to reflect your post above Gary, hope that's ok?

My mk1 2.0 auto sierra had an oil cooler fitted that looked original (i had to take it out as it leaked like fook)

Box worked fine without it, although i didnt really put heavy demand on it

A  standard 1.8 CVH Sierra rad will fit  if you block off the extra pipe

Is nobody able to step up and save this? It is a seriously good car other than the obvious problems and absolutely deserves to get saved. Sadly there are dead Triumphs taking up all my off-road parking at the moment so it can't come and live here with no T&T.... its a bloody lovely old bus, somebody PLEASE come and save it

Thing with the insurance is, I doubt they'd be keen on paying out now the MOT's run out...

Realistically, as I've nowhere to store it, and there's no way it's gonna be MOTd by Friday when the tax runs out, I'm a bit stuck.

I really hope someone can take it on and have a go at saving it, it's too good to be bridged. I don't wanna get all "buy it or I'm gonna scrap it", but er, that basically. That will only happen if there is literally no other option though.

Posted

I don't want it (sorry!) but would it go through an MOT with a new screen, Gary?

Posted

Dunno, but I don't think it'd take much. The advisories from last time were:

Front number plate (now replaced by brookjm)

(Sill) Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is corroded but not excessive - both sides. The sill ends seem to have been done at some point, not sure what bits these refer to. Possibility of a bit of welding.

Various brake hoses slightly deteriorated.

Play in lower steering column bush, and in adjustable steering column. Can't see this being a fail, I've not noticed it.

Slight bind on osr brake

Battery insecure (it's wedged in with a bit of cardboard)

Seat belt missing (middle rear, not a fail)

So although there are quite a few points there I don't think there's much to worry about. It is making a sort of chirpy noise that sounds a bit wheel bearing or warped disc-y, so something there might need looking at, I've not investigated as I was just gonna see what the MOT man said.

Is it worth taking it somewhere and seeing what they say? You could even be cheeky, tell them you're going away for a couple of weeks and will leave it with them. That way you can MOT it to see what it actually needs and score some free storage for a short while to buy you some time.

It's worth noting that the lad who did the MoT does like his advisories.  He's pretty fair at not failing stuff, but he will advise anything and everything.  I shouldn't imagine it'll need a huge amount, unless it's seriously deteriorated since I sold it (which I doubt, given the owners it's had).

^WWuvS.  The advisory list from last year looks alarming at first but are minor, and such things as brake hoses being slightly deteriorated are a given considering its age.  Rear of the sills are a bit crusty so might need a bit of weldage there but not lots.  With a bit of radweld this could be a reliable old workhorse for someone.

Brighton/South Coast area I believe. I hope someone can save it before it ends up on the oval.

Cons:

No MOT,

Screen needs replacing before MOT,

Previous MOT advisory mentions corrosion and ball joints (the darlings of the MOt tester)

Radiator leaks within half an hour.

I'd suggest taking a radiator with you if anyone wants it - 100 is very cheap though!

Pic from happier times.

Ive just re read the thread, found myself missing having it around, but I'm not able to entertain taking it back with the pug 504 taking my time and money at the mo.

I do hope someone can as its a decent motah, well worth a bit of effort and really relaxing to pootle about in. The alloys are near mint, all the tyres are decent, its a lovely colour, the interior is brimming with the little details that mark it out as the top specced estate you could buy from ford uk at the time. Its even got pneumatic lumbar adjustment!!!! The windscreen issue is a  shame but do it on the insurance and get a spanking new fully functioning heated front screen back. (as wuv said only a few bars were working on the old one) I lobbed a  leather cosworth 4x4 steering wheel on it so take that off, flog it and it should help to offset your costs.
