As I'm sure many of you already know from the grin thread, I've recently made a start uploading some the Look at Life videos on to youtube, I discovered this brilliant DVD box set after Vin excellent screen grabs thread a few years back.

(Take notice, It's an example of what a proper thread looks like  )

and the DVD's available here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Look-Life-Volume-One-Transport/dp/B0030A0Z6Q/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1382897847&sr=8-3&keywords=look+at+life.

Any hows I thought I'd chuck the one's I've done so far up on here in one handy thread to share, enjoy.

Oh these are fecking awesome! I'm also amazed at how clear the footage is.

I hate to be the one who says it but this isn't a good idea.

The economics of minority interest DVDs like these are poor as it is, even though I consider 8-9 hours of films per box set to be great value - Vin's thread persuaded me to buy the DVDs, and bunging them up on YouTube can only work against future decisions to release stuff like this.

Maybe, but it's also a good way of getting younger people (as well as older folk) interested in our motoring heritage who wouldn't normally see this kind of thing.

Network will still sell plenty of copies and I bet there's even people who have seen my youtube videos and that has been encouraged to go out and buy the box set as presents for people.

This is truly amazing stuff ! Many thanks, Trig !

All I need now is a way to convince Mrs.Fraud that there's no better way to spend a Sunday evening than watching 1960s information videos...

There's no link back to the DVDs on YT Trigger.

I doubt the 1900odd views on Down in The Dumps came from here.

I respect the effort you've gone to but I still think its a bad idea. If Look at Life was popular enough to not worry about this then the box set would sell for half the price.

These are bloody great. I wasted usefully spent a couple of hours yesterday looking at some of these, looks like I'll be doing a bit more later.

These are absolutely brilliant Trig! Thanks for putting them up. I shall save these for when I've got a bit of time (probably tomorrow as I probably have no work again)

Companies don't usually complain about free advertising. Watching on youtube is not the same as owning the dvd, I can watch loads of concert videos on youtube but like them and buy the discs.

p.s, 29 reviews on Amazon since it's release 3 years ago hardly makes it that popular anyway.

I do see your point but don't think this will really impact sales much, if at all.

I would have thought that if the publishers had an objection to them being on YouTube, they could pretty easily get them taken down. Lots of other material seems to get removed for copyright reasons.

I have to say though, if it wasn't for these uploads I wouldn't have known about these films, so I'm much more likely to buy the DVDs now than I was before.

Thanks for the thread.

Fascinating stuff Trig, I really enjoyed watching those. Agree that seeing a few videos makes the DVDs seem much more appealing.

Jurassic Park is the 13th highest grossing film of all time having earned over 1 billion dollars at the box office.

It has only had 72 reviews on Amazon.

I have to say though, if it wasn't for these uploads I wouldn't have known about these films, so I'm much more likely to buy the DVDs now than I was before.

And if Trigger uploads all 54 films how likely is that you would you pay £13 for a box, a sleeve and four discs?

Let's put it this way, Jurassic Park was commissioned by Universal Pictures (turnover $4billion) at a production cost of $63 million with an advertising spend of $65million to earn over $1billion at the box office.

Plus merchandising.

Plus dvd/video/blu-ray sales.

Now if someone puts it on youtube and 2000 people watch it then

A) Lost sales won't bankrupt the studio and

B ) A business of that size will likely employ people (including lawyers) to combat piracy.

Whereas Network's business model involves buying old, unloved film stock and re-releasing it.

Let's imagine that when Network got hold of all the Look at Life films they realised that packaging up 54 transport related films in one box could be an earner.

Purchase costs, design, production and marketing means that they need to flog, perhaps, 30,000 DVDs to break even.

Now that Trig's vids are hitting 3000 views in 24hours (this thread has only just broached 200) someone at Network might just be looking at the time spent petitioning YouTube and the relative cost of employing an anti-piracy department to a company of their size and saying "fuck the transport geeks, this isn't worth it".

I just don't think they're big enough to take the hit.

I'm a realist and I know that piracy is going to happen, if everyone who watched something on the net went out and bought a legitimate copy then there would be no anti-piracy ads on DVDs and the music and film industry wouldn't spend hundreds of millions trying to stamp it out.

I can't tell you that I've never done it either.

I just believe that a few dodgy copies of Jurassic Park are equivalent to shoplifting a can beans from tesco whereas doing network out of a thousand DVD sales is like robbing the days takings from the nice little old lady who runs the corner shop at the end of your road.

Soon there won't be a corner shop.

Yeah. Anyway, the lorry drivers on Facebook LOVE the night trunkers episode, scammel trailer couplings and bacon and eggs at the diner. Lists of reminiscing about the good old days going on.

Great videos Trig - I'd never heard of this series until now. Amazing quality too.

Disagree RE the piracy thing - I'll now go look up what other old videos that network has released with a view to buy. I had no idea they existed before now

RE copyright and YouTube- how it works with regard to blocking/removing stuff is either people report it manually (very few bother) or it's picked up by "bots" which trawl the internet looking for copyrighted content, and then report it to YouTube. Often they're owned by the company who owns the copyright (e.g Disney) which is why you get "this video has been blocked on copyright claims by XYZ productions" messages where the video used to be.

You do get bounty hunting outfits (often registered in India for some reason) which seek out and report copyrighted material on behalf of whoever owns it. "RTI Productions" is one such outfit that comes to mind. There's probably loads of different ones now, but it's ages since I've done any YouTubing.

There's lots of myths about how you can cheat the bots-people have tried flipping videos: that doesn't work (they still pick up on sound) so IMO it's bollocks.

If whoever owns this footage really wanted it off of YouTube, it would be gone by now, end of.

I reckon 60% of what's on YouTube is copyrighted anyway, either from TV shows or it's music. Gone are the days when it used to be full of original, user generated content, and even some of that is ripped off!

I don't have a problem with it though. Otherwise I'd never know about this series, or be able to watch clips of told Top Gear :D

Watched most of those last night, was great! Caused me to be very late to bed...

I wholeheartedly recommend the DVDs. I've got the Transport, Science and Culture sets, as well as the smaller London DVD someone else put out. Amazing value considering how many films you get on each one. Picture quality is astounding and makes you realise how rare it is to see early '60s Britain in clear, bright colour.

I have been watching the BBC compilations of these which are called 'Britain on Film'. Its very good.

I was a bit cheesed off to see the Beeb had pulled the Private Life of the Ford Cortina vid you uploaded a while back trig - fair play its their copyright, but they NEVER show it on telly, and AFAIK its not available to buy anywhere. I certainly looked for it for ages with no joy - So why disallow it from You Tube so no one gets to see it ever?
