"Scene" twats.

The difference between the AS 'scene' (if such a thing exists at all - which I doubt) is that we just like to run and celebrate the slightly aged, the whiffy and the unloved, rather than actively encouraging modifications to cars which at best severely limits their resale appeal and their ability to function as cars, and at worst actively makes them dangerous and gives 'car enthusiasts' a bad name.

I've nothing against people modding cars as such, the first car magazine I bought regularly was Custom Car (not just for the titties, honest!) but some of the abortions you see really shouldn't be on the road. How would something like this react if the driver had to suddenly brake or swerve to avoid an obstacle on the road?

"patently undriveable, dangerous shit"

I had the cheek to criticise that Celica when it was posted on R-R, as it was clearly a dangerous concept, and very dangerously put together. From the reaction I got, you'd have thought I'd murdered someone's mother and fed her to their dog.

Edit: here's a link, in case anyone's interested. http://www.retrorides.proboards.com/thread/127725/warning-potential-controversial-cambered-celica

Sorry to piss on everyone's chips, but Autoshite is just as much of a "scene" as the Caravan Club or Trampdrift.com. Just with different values. Differing values will always inspire hate.

I don't agree that Autoshite is a "scene"; we appreciate the unappreciated but there's no particular AS "look" or "looks". I don't insist on that point of view though; perhaps we are a scene.

However, when all is said and done, the simple fact is that it's jolly good fun to take the piss out of those who do bizarre things to their cars, especially as John F put it so well, "most of them just haven't grown up enough yet to realise that they can't just copy 'individuality'".

And, the wider point, which is very important indeed to me: there's nothing wrong with taking the piss. We're grown-ups and we can deal with it. When people take the piss out of me, particularly when there's no malice intended, that's absolutely fine with me. A pisstaking thread has great appeal partly because it's not allowed in the home of the pineapple. I don't like to be told I can't say that a car is shit - or even mention the word 'shit' without an automatic censor deciding that what I really mean is 'curse word'. That really bugs me.

Let's feel free to criticise. After all if everyone thought the car I was knocking around in was completely ridiculous and made me look like a total twat, I'd want to know about it rather than have people sniggering behind my back. Wouldn't you?

It absolutely is, or has become such.  Look how everyone reacts and gets all sycophantic when someone joins with or buys something that is actually rare/unusual/useless as opposed to the daily shiters so many people use.

Some people like doing silly stuff to cars.  Other people are happy with the compromise that car manufacturers come up with.

I've driven cars that many people think are too low to get over speedbumps since 1993.  Hopefully I'll never grow up and get something other people will tell me is sensible.

OK old chap, fair enough.

If you drive around in a modified car because that's what you like, then you have my respect. People who go their own way in life, wear what they want to wear, drive what they want to drive, etc, I will always take my hat off to. Don't grow up, because you sound like a top fellow just as you are.

I'm still likely to take the piss out of you though.

I think there is an Autoshite scene, or actually, there are two. Both stick two fingers up to the world and feature cars that no-one else likes. The difference is that one school finds great joy in driving around in cars that look pretty ropey, while there's a separate school that likes these unloved cars in truly superb condition. Long may it continue as I find great joy in both.

I love factory standard, though I'm not absolute purist - my 2CV is proof of that.

As for 'scenesters,' it's like any sort of modification. There are those that do it well, and those who make a real flamin' mess of it. Sadly, there are far more in the latter camp purely because to modify well is not easy and can be expensive. How many Morris Minors had proper half-job "V8 and Jag back axle" custom jobs back in the 1980s? And Mk1 Escorts for that matter? Some were superb. Many were hopeless.

I'm responsible for that black Allegro estate.  I would do that.

I like it. But then I liked Custom Car magazine too. 70's cars were customised to make them better, not sure the same can be said about scene VWs.

I don't mid a bit of 'scene tax'. A car tastefully lowered properly can look nice. For instance I really appreciate the Polo 3 lowered (not chopped) with a nice set of wheels.

However I do have to say that mongy exhausts like the one pictured by the OP are pretty daft as are any mods that effectively personalise the car to such a point that its never going to be taken on by anyone else as the cost to turn it back to normal will probably outweigh the value of the car.

But ho hum, each to their own. Its always been the same but with a different craze for each generation.

Bob on. Theres nothing wrong with modified stuff, its when its taken to extremes, is unsafe or effectively ruins the car irreversibly that annoys me. That and the fake ratlook stuff which seems to be following the same formula of rust + dents + wacky stickers. Similarly the stretchy tyres and silly amounts of camber thing is daft as far as I'm concerned but I do like a nicely modified motor. Allow me to demonstrate -

Less arguing, MOAR PICS OF SHIT SCENE MOTORZ PLZ.

I'm all for people enjoying their cars, even if I think they do look a bit daft but some of them are just plain poorly modified dangerous shitters that deserve to be destroyed by a monster truck or something.

I’d never heard the story of the Swagrabbit before, beautiful!!! Loving the sheer hassle and misery that guy put himself through in order to look cool, only to ultimately result in losing his car and becoming an internet legend of sheer sacklessness.

Otherwise, shit thread with yet more pages of the same folk moaning about the same folk they always moan about, i.e. everyone but themselves.

This is meant to be a a funny thread about funny looking scene cars not a philosophical discusion on the merits of the individuality of one's person FFS.

Look at the state of this!

I don't follow ANY scene! I don't regard autoshite as a scene, for me its about running some old heap as cheaply as possible whilst feeling smugly superior to people with 4 year old repmobiles on finance. do what you like to your own vehicle. just expect to be called a belming joey if you drive a camaro on 32" rims or a polo that runs on its sidewalls.

anyway enough philosophical discussion, here's a video of USA scene.

Autoshite most certainly isn't a 'scene'. Not unless you can imagine a scene that's broad enough to encompass all cars, vans, motorbikes, buses and trucks from all manufacturers and from pretty much all eras (even some comparative moderns are creeping in, e.g. DW's Daihatsu and TooSavvy's Savvy), modified and unmodified, pristine or tatty, and where there is no requirement to like, appreciate or even understand cars owned by other forum members.

It's just a place on the Internet, and occasionally a field somewhere in Britain, where sensible* car enthusiasts can get together and swear a lot. Fucksticks.

You have to admit, this is a bit wank. I followed it up the motorway once and it was bouncing all over the place and could barely reach 45mph.

I just don't see the appeal in them.

Making your car crapper than it actually is seems a bit moronic. Autoshite is keeping the generally unloved, unfashionable ticking along. You don't make your  car more rusty or put a beer keg on the roof.

If you deliberately screw the number plate on at a jaunty angle you are definitely a twat! (IMHO of course). I hadn't heard of the word 'scene' used in this context until about a fortnight ago so keep the pics coming. This is an education for me.

To be fair I seem to remember that when I saw it it has a stack of camber on the wheels, and was obviously difficult to drive. It doesn't look too bad in that pic.

Shamou! Rusty, I said in my post about modifying cars to the point that they are uneconomical to turn back but it made me think of an Imp that was badly billy boy'd up in the 80's that some chap bought and restored back to normal.

Can you remember it and do you have photos? *

*actually I think it might be on the LongGoneJohn (TooSavvy) thread.....will look when I get home.
