Reg Nutsack's TOP TEN 2-LITRE BEATERS - NEW BEATER CHIN SCRATCHING

It might surprise y'all to learn this, but I worked as a towbar fitter for about 5 years and Scotchlok were the industry standard then. We fitted hundreds of towbars in the time I worked there and NOT ONE ever came back with a bad connection issue.

True story.

I still don't use them myself though.

Checked the calibration of the mileometer with my phone as well. Although the speedo over-reads by 8-10%, the mileometer is pretty freaking accurate, less than 1% discrepancy I'd say. So my MPG is better than I thought, averaging 37+ MPG!!!!! What a car, I love it.

Was going to say this is the case, speedos normally over read by about 10% but the odometer should be very accurate.

Scotchlocks are the work of the devil but are meant to be good as they push the insulation back and they are meant to seal up around the conductor. Sometimes called insulation displacement connections. The reality is that they are cheap and nasty and the w shaped blade bit corrodes and spreads into the wiring .I always solder my towbat connections but it's a right twat if you get it wrong.

I've always found a new scotchlock connection to be OK, but old connections made with them (like on an old car I've bought) to be flaky. I put it down to me being the king of scotchlocks and everyone before me is crap. But perhaps, the different metals causing corrosion is actually the sensible answer.

Still shit though.

Scotchlocks are fine if they are used properly and kept dry, the majority of towbar electric problems are in the screw terminals in the socket or plug. I think "chocolate block" connectors are the work of the devil, and will almost certainly give trouble if they aren't used with ferrules.

IDCs are used extensively in Telecommunications and you never hear of connection problems in that industry.

Top threading Bol. After threatening to buy one of these for years, I think I'm about ready to copy the cool kid and take the plunge. Ta for the 'review.'

Annoyingly, my neighbour has just traded her Primera in for some MPV thing. I wasn't quick enough!

Driven this 1500 miles over the last fortnight without the slightest hiccup, even fatha ba11s drove it for 6 hours on the return leg and declared it the nicest car he's driven (that's not saying much like). Got from Luxembourg to Wisbech on a tankful as well. Its even up for a bit of gentle green-laning.

I say 'not a hiccup' but it did start to hiccup a bit about 10 miles from home on the A50, seemed to temporarily limit itself to 4500rpm for some reason. Not sure what that was about but its not doing it today.... Annoying

Fatha_ba11s got flashed by a French speed camera within about 20 mins of getting behind the wheel!! Dont think owt will come of it like.

BUMP FOR A REAL THREAD (I had forgotten about that)

The MOT is up on this Primera next week, meaning that i have been driving it for 1 year (minus 3 weeks of Rover 75 propulsion) and I've done 18,000 miles in this £200 scrapyard save. Brilliant!!! I hope the MOT will be a fairly painless experience cos everything is working OK on it and I dont think its got any horrible rot issues lurking, beyond the ones I sorted last year.

ONe thing thats not great, is a clicky CV joint. As I drive out of my works car par every night I have to make a sharp right turn so I am reminded EVERY FLIPPING DAY of a job that needs doing on my car. Well today I tackled it!!!

P1070088.jpg

Bought a new CV joint from euro car parts, only cost £28 (so probably made of monkey metal) but to be fair to ECP I didnt have to exchange it, they gave me the right one first time. Had to take the driveshaft out but thats not the end of the world.

Anyway it was such a beautiful day, how could anyone grumble about fixing motors on a day like today?

P1070085.jpg

I am pleased to report that the job went swimmingly and now the clicking noise is gone. I hoovered out the interior as well while I was on making the driving experience 50% more agreeable.

Now i feel i will be putting this in for a test at least having made a token effort to prepare it (I looked for rot, knackered bushes and torn CV boots and found none) so fingers crossed for next week.

Good stuff Mr_B.

I saw a green Primera Si at the Morrisons pez station today and thought of this.

Have any of you guys used j and r driveshafts?

I've used them a fair bit now and they are so so cheap . 2 year warranty and I haven't had a bad one yet . A cv joint kit for a hilux is a 70 or 80 quid job from the factors but 26 delivered from them .

The boots are thick and aren't universal so fit the joints well . Kits come with clips nuts etc .

No connection to me just a happy customer

Knocking about round to work and back Mondeo 2.0 does easy 32mpg which isn't too bad. I do about 100 miles a week. A car doing about 50 to the gallon might save me a fiver a week so considering I'd have to get some awful disaster prone deeeesal, I think it does well.

Ha! My 2CV had the advisory "body corroded all over" a good three or four years ago. Are you going to sort it or is it Rovers Only from now on?

Posted

Ooh not good, especially as it seems such a cracking car in general. Zealous testing or reasonable comments?

Posted

Hang on, that's only advisory - from the Latin "advisory" meaning "ignore and hope nobody finds this thread when you lob it on eBay in 10 months time"

Posted

And hide it when you take it in for the next mot and watch them disappear

Le sigh.....

Its a 14 year old Nissan, who cares so long as its not in huge great holes.

MOT tester either

i) Being over cautious in this day of litigation culture and drawing your attention to potential issues to look over in the next 12 months

ii) Being a twat because he had a row with the missus this morning
