Station Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 I often see these for sale, I know of someone who bought one for £250 and I turned down an offer to buy it purely because I didn't want it. He MOT'd it and sold it for 400 quid. I can't think of any other car with rear wheel drive, excellent handling and a good engine for the same money.Apart from one of these: Reliability and the plain 'they're just rubbish' claims from people who have never even been in one aside, I don't understand how something like this can be gained for a couple of week's minimum wage money with tax and test. At the moment, I can think of cars like a mk6 Escort, a mk3 Cavalier, a mk1/2 Vectra and the usual Clio/Punto to match them on worthlessness.
RedSparrow Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 I'd roll in an M(H)GF. Are they really that worthless now?
skattrd Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 I'd roll in an M(H)GF. Are they really that worthless now? Pretty much.I'd roll in one as long as the HG, belts etc had been done, as the belts and whatnot on these are a bit of a pig to get at.
Shep Shepherd Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 I had no idea that the second generation MR2 was available for so little money these days
HMC Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Im suprised how cheap ford pumas are, given thier reception new and the fact that it will one day be an OMG old skool ford
skattrd Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Doesn't Krujoe have a mk2 Mr. 2? Whilst we're on about worthless can someone please buy that Dedra that was posted in the ebay tat thread please. It's currently £300 with no bids and is winking at me .... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251293957926?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
worldofceri Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Nobody seems interested in Saab 9000s. This clean looking one with nearly a year's mot went for £361.
Split_Pin Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 My mate Richard had a Mister two like that. I thought it was fugging ace and went like the clappers after he fitted one of those 'Beams' engines. Nice interior too, leather covered dash.

Station Posted June 26, 2013 Author Posted June 26, 2013 Agree on the 90's Saab thing. A workmate recently said 'They're just Cavaliers underneath', which is correct, apart from the shell, the engine, the cast alloy wishbones and subframe, the interior, the the electrics and the build quality being different. So yes, the mounting points in the engine bay, the bellhousing, the front struts and the rear beam being the same, they are just Cavaliers underneath.I picked up a FSH OTR 2000 9-3 for 450 which isn't bad for a well built 205bhp car.
dollywobbler Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 To tell if a car is worthless, see if I've bought it! Saab 9000 = worthless. Nissan Bluebird = worthless. Mercedes W124 = worthless. Volvo 740 = worthless. All great cars if you just want something to get about in. None of them particularly exciting, but how exciting is any humdrum saloon really? I don't like the MGF. I made the mistake of driving one back-to-back with a BMW Z3 - a car I'd previously hated. I really liked the BMW but the MGF just felt plasticky and horrible. The MR2 is a genuine bargain though. If I like sports cars, I'd buy one. Another nomination for 'bargain' is the Ford Mondeo. Stonking value.
Cavcraft Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 You can add Mercedes 190E to that list too. No wonder most of 'em got exported, no bleeder in Blighty seems to want them.
Station Posted June 26, 2013 Author Posted June 26, 2013 Wasn't the Z3 the reason BMW didn't export the MGF in the US?I found the MGF interior isn't made of plastic, but rather some strange 'cast' foam material - it's all held together with a handful of screws, and a plastic clips that break easily. They cut sections out for the dials, gearknob etc. It feels tough, but it's not, er, clipped together well (especially when you've removed it).I bet the Z3 feels much better quality inside - they do look a bit dated now though, even compared to the MGF.
warren t claim Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 My old W124 sold easily so not all Mercs are unsaleable. I have no idea why the Mk2 Mister Two is so cheap other than the fact that they are so plentyful. In 10 years I'm sure they'll be fetching good money though.

warren t claim Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 How long can this thread go on for before someone calls the MGF a backwards Metro?
John F Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Doesn't Krujoe have a mk2 Mr. 2? Yep, I've driven it. It needs a pair of rear dampers and a smidgin of cosmetic tidying, but otherwise it's a sweet little thing.
Spiny Norman Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 The number of these things you see advertised for well under a grand is frightening.
Junkman Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 A collegue/friend of mine had a Saab 9000 back in the day and did about 50k miles of driving per year. I went on a few business trips with him throughout Scandinavia and have to say I was impressed with the comfort and performance. They are also a lot roomier than one would think just looking at the pics, they are actually quite big cars.Would I buy one today? Yes, if the price is right (I'm a tight bastard, so three figures beginning with a 2 would be my maximum outlay), I'd use one as a WBoD any time.
cort16 Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 It's because all the rx8's are shagged and the ones that aren't probably will be soon so it puts people off. It's the k-series effect. The Nissan Primulas seem massively unloved but they're reliable and nice to drive.
Junkman Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 I find these are ridiculously underpriced and about to enter Shite territory.
Rover414 Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 I'd quite like an MGF to be honest, must be the K-Series attraction! Speaking of which, I saw a 10 plate MGTF yesterday, seemed very late? I'd probably have an F over the TF though.
Barry Cade Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 I like my MGF. Head gasket 3 hours and 60 quid. Timing belt 1.5 hours and 40 quid including water pump- access is better than some front engined cars.40+ MPG even when playing silly buggers, comfy for someone like me at 6ft4... Misunderstood I tell ya....
vulgalour Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 When it comes to the RX8s I've been seriously tempted a few times to get a barely road legal one for peanuts just for the experience of owning one, they're one of the very few modern cars I actually like the look of. I was going to add a suggestion to this thread and it was completely derailed by musing over RX8 ownership.
xkjaguar Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 I had a mk2 MR2 and it was a hoot to drive, mind you i have 27kms of windy single track road from the nearest shop to my house which i could negotiate at between 100 and 160kph (62-100mph)i also had a SAAB 9000 before i emigrated (I had 2 actually an 2.3 normally asp and then a 2.3 turbo) and they were hoon mobiles, huge inside and i commuted 100+miles a day in great comfort-- wasn't worth a sou when i left so just abandoned it in Heathrow long term parking nearly 6 years agoNow have a 124 merc (300TE estate which is a nice comfortable thing for picking up the animal feed and handles much better in poor weather than the S320 lwb)
Tetleysmooth Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 You can add Mercedes 190E to that list too. No wonder most of 'em got exported, no bleeder in Blighty seems to want them. I wouldn't mind a 190e, particularly if it were a 2.6 They seem to be an appreciating classic.

garethj Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Most Jaguars go through a worthless stage, the XJ-S has been there for ages and looks like it always will be. But people thought the same about the E Type back in the '70s. The X300 has the looks of the best Jaguars, decent engineering and is a lovely place to sit, but they're dirt cheap. As dollywobbler says, most things I've owned have been valueless. The current Porsche 924 is incredibly cheap when you compare it to a Scirocco or Capri. The Pug 205 is much the same, the GTi versions are worth money but all the others are worth £500 max and considering they've got all the equipment you need (heater, 12V socket and can cruise at 75mph) but are fun to drive and cheap to repair they're a real bargain. They don't even rust much.
bub2006 Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 I've just been looking on the bay at rover 600ti. Quiet cheap and looks like a church going vehicle. 200bhp though so bit of a sleeper!
Lukas Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Every used car in the UK is absolutely underpriced and worthless for someone from Euro-country. Your prices are ridiculously low, can´t imagine what effect it would have on our used car marked. Look at www.gebrauchtwagen.at what prices are normal here. You all will have to pop your eyes back in. Lukas
