Kia advert

I quite enjoyed it although I agree it was a bit of a advert for Kia, nice car mind, I wonder what the score is with them smashing up so many Kia's though, would all the cars be old prototypes and training vehicles destined for scrapping?.

Posted

I enjoyed that as well. Lot of Kia content but I quite like them tbh.

Presumably ex training cars / pre production models destined for the bin anyway.

I would have thought with that much exposure the loss of a few Kias wouldn't concern them that much. The rugby match was a bit tame, at least it gave them a chance to bring out the old willy joke again.

Yeah, even if they were all saleable, top of the range models that they smashed up, that's still very cheap advertising. Found it all a bit cringey and painful tbh.

would anyone in their right mind pay £5 less for a new Cee'd than a Focus??

You can guarantee the Focus will be worth twice as much 4/5 years down the line and you won't get sod all trade in for the Kia at anywhere other than the Kia garage.

Looks nice though..

From what I understand that it's the way things are nowadays - it might be that down the road the new KIA will be worth as much or more than the Ford, attitudes to Korean cars have changed - just like they did with the Japanese.

Add into the mix, the better KIA warranty and the likelihood that the Cee'd is possibly a better car for reliability and there's your answer

I thought they stood up quite well, certainly a good bit of PR for Kia. The worse I saw was that bucked wheel, which was still working!

At least in 10 years when they drop to shite prices that may have held up ok to a decade of being beaten about like the white good they are!

I certainly would.

In terms of residuals there's little between them, in the right spec the Kia is suprisingly good in terms of depreciation whilst the Focus whilst not terrible is no better than most mid market cars. Its not the case any more than anything from the far east has horrific depreciation.

The other thing to remember is that at four / five years old, the Kia is still in warranty whereas the Focus has waved its warranty goodbye a while back, thats massively appealing to some used car buyers.

I've just sold a 2010 Ford to get into a Kia of the same age and mileage on the basis that its a far better car. So there you go.

Posted

If I was a normal sensible family bloke looking at a new family car, I think that the Kia would win over the Focus, due in no small part to the 7 year warranty. As mentioned, residuals are pretty much the same. Kia are now pretty much where Skoda are in terms of brand acceptance, and Hyundai are catching up fast. The new Kia would probably be Dacia !

You'll always get knobheads who are badge snobs though.

They look alright, no better or no worse than most modern cars. Those self parking systems concern me though. If you can't park you shouldn't be driving, and how would it stand if it went wrong and hit something. Would it be classe as not being in proper control of a vehicle?

Having run a 2011 Ce'ed for just over a year I would describe it as "perfectly adequate." It does everything that a car needs to do as a means of getting from A-B and there was nothing to touch it price wise when we got it at less than a year old with 7k miles on it and most of the 7 year warranty to run. I've every faith in it giving us good service for the next 5 years or so (basically we'll keep it until the warranty runs out most likely) however, the build quality is absolutely shocking - a car with less than 20k on it should't sound like the interior is about to fall apart on every pothole. By contrast I also on occasion drive a 2010 Focus for work that has about 50k on it (and gets abused regularly) and it still feels as tight and well screwed together as the day it rolled out of the showroom.

Hopefully the build quality on the new Ce'ed is improved because it's the only thing that would stop me getting another one when the time comes.

Agree with this - not sure it should be allowed really. Would be a very grey area if a person got knocked down as a result of such a system being used, for example, and as NC says, if you can't park you shouldn't be on the roads.

Much as I hate to say it, I thought the Kia looked a better car than the Focus or Astra thing they had on earlier. (OK so not a direct comparison with the whizzo turbo ones they were testing, but same size/style of car). Still couldn't do it though.

I like TG but last night's was one of the most boring for a while. If I wanted to see a comparison between three hot hatches and a test on a Korean shopping car I'd buy Auto Express.

Top Gear is far more fun when they're screeching round the track in some ridiculous £300k supercar and dropping pianos on things.

It is worrying how modern cars are being sold to the facebook generation as being autonomous, so you can internet on your iThing while you drive instead of watching where you're going, but that's the way the world's going I guess.... :(

Posted

As much as I admire what Kia have done*, I still wouldn't buy one because like all these mid range nothing cars, they're too expensive. £17 grand buys a base model (but with air and 'loys) BMW 114i, the 1.4 Turbo thing. Not very exciting but it'll be worth a few grand more than a Kia in 5 years time and after 100'000 miles it should still be tight and rattle free.

Whilst the Kia warranty is enticing, it has plenty of get out clauses as well. Reliability wise, I doubt they're much better than anything else. Sorry, I'll keep Ellesmere Port open and buy an Astra if I want a mid range hatchback.

*Feel the tickle of wool as it brushes your eyelids.

Mmmm, A can of this:

and one of these:

resulting in damage like this:

could prove funny. I could never fully trust it, even though it can probably park better than me! It seemed to lurch around whilst parking itself.

The Kia advert seemed to work; was sitting watching TG in the better half's folks house last night. After weeks spent convincing MIL that a Dacia Sandero was a good replacement for her Chevrolewoo Matiz it now looks like she's going to look at Kias. Grr.

All new cars have horrific depreciation, I was just really surprised the list price was the same. I'm sure in a dealer the Kia could be had with a bigger discount than the Ford and think most people would buy the Ford if it was their own money at the full list price.

So they do depreciate more then??

I'm certainly no brand snob, I was only saying the other day how nice the Hyundai i40 estate looked that a chap down my road has.

That VXR Astra.....£27k for a small hatchback...just crazy.

I saw a KIA Optima for US$37,000 the other month....

If I paid more than US$17,000... I'd be feeling robbed

I've no doubt that Kias are very admirable motor cars in their respective classes, but to have almost a whole hour devoted to them on prime time British television,on a channel funded by you and I ? Personally I think this is despicable, and what sweeteners did KIA give the BBC Clarkson and Wilman to do this over and above having a cee'd as the star in the reasonably priced car? So in the coming weeks shall they be featuring Fords Vauxhalls Peugeots Citroens and Volkswagons in equal measure to redress the balance? I think not, such blatent propeganda is unwelcome on non commercial television in my book.

MILLIONS OUTRAGED AS SOMEONE FROM THE BBC SAYS THEY LIKE SOMETHING.

There was rioting outside Broadcasting House today after Mr J Clarkson off of a car based comedy show said a medium sized Korean hatchback was actually pretty good and the proceeded to use a number of said automobiles in an amusing sport based section of the show.

'To think that my license fee is being used to pay for this rubbish' exclaimed Mr S. Righteous of Steins 'What a load of old tripe. If Mr So-Called Clarkson wants to express a opinion on a car then I demand that over the coming weeks he expresses an opinion, of equal length on each of its competitors.'

After a barage of complaints from readers of the Daily Missery Online, Bleeter, and some obscure car forum the BBC has apologised and advised of how it plans to rectify the situation.

'We plan on taking Mr Righteous' idea and running with it to give the most unbiased coverage of medium sized hatchbacks ever known. The rest of an extended series of Top Gear will contain the following segments:'

Volkswagen Golfs playing hockey,

Ford Focuses playing volleyball,

Vauxhall Astras playing tennis,

Nissan Jukes playing rounders,

Toyota Auris' bowling,

Hyundai i30s playing table tennis,

Mazda 3s playing basket ball,

Peugeot 308s doing synchronized swimming,

Renault Meganes playing cricket,

Audi A3s running marathons,

Citroen C4s doing a relay,

Seat Leons playing hide and seek,

MG 6s in a hot dog eating contest,

Fiat Bravos skydiving,

Alfa Romeo Giulettas curling,

Proton Gen2s playing darts,

Honda Civics extreme ironing,

Chrysler Deltas white water rafting,

Chevrolet Cruzes doing a tug of war,

BMW 1 Series playing Polo,

Mercedes A-Classes doing yoga,

And finally a Dacia Sandero clay pigeon shooting.

'Of course, this does mean that we are going to have to close BBC 4 and all of our radio stations apart from Radio 1 and 2, but we are choosing to completely ignore the fact that many people enjoyed it and yet still have no intention of rushing out and buying a Kia.'

/\/\ Nice one :lol::lol:

you just cant please all the people all the time

I quite like the ceed and i think 20 odd minutes isnt that much a problem to licence payers, its much better than half an hour of eastend shite nearly every night of the week

Friggin nora man. They were messing about in a new Kia, not advocating genocide or something.

I agree it's not exactly a big deal - but if the BBC must give a free advert to a car manufacture, I'd much prefer it if it was a manufacturer which at least makes some of its stuff in the UK!

Shouldn't we be looking at this not as an advert/propaganda/rise of the Kia empire etc. but as an in depth feature on futureshite? I reckon a 10 year old Cee'd will be prime Autoshite material...

I wasn't particularly outraged by it, just thought it was a bit hypocritical really. No doubt if TG weren't receiving obscene amounts of Kia's money they'd be slagging off the car merrily, not singing its praises every ten minutes and saying "how lovely and cool it was in the air-conditioned cabin'.
