OMG OLD SKOOL RETRO KAO

An excellent hour on a 50 year old report of the 1963 "big freeze" featuring Cliff Michealmore no less! Even Ridley Scott in the credits too. If you've ever wanted to see an Austin 7 driven across a river in Oxford now's your chance. The footage of the sea frozen on the beaches being particularly surreal.

They don't want to encourage people to drive on the highest public road in the UK when there's a danger of getting stuck or stranded?

Health and safety gone mad, etc.

There's no snow at all here but I'm going to go to the shop and buy all their pot noodles just incase.

My boss used to have a 370Z (Auto) and it was the most hopeless piece of shite in anything even close to a mild frost. It just wouldn't move off the spot and if it did it was at a 45 degree angle.

That has to be the absolute height of embarrassment. Not ditching your 'flash' car, but having to be taken home in an Iveco.

Home on an Iveco, used to be the normal for me, and i felt no embarrassment.

Got about half an inch of snow in Southend today. Not exactly OMG SNO KAOS, but I'm glad that I won't be going out until tomorrow evening:

It isn't that bad once you get on the main roads, went for a drive - Hadleigh - Wickford and back. Sierra was a bit twitchy at times, but I'm still alive!

St Michael's road ...

I drove down the M65 in search of snow yesterday and found a reasonable amount at Colne and spent an afternoon chucking mself and the kids down hills - but most impressivly I came across this UNIMOG gritter.

Currently sat in Amsterdam airport waiting for a flight home to Sa'fend that was due to take of two hours ago, been here since 12:30 as it was cold outside and could be here a lot longer yet.

Nearly all the flights are cancelled and it's snowing heavy, it's packed full of people looking very glum too.

Wife's meant to be collecting me but can't get to airport now. Bloody poxy snow!

Posted

Trigger, my recommendation is to find a sleeping spot ASAP!

They will claim they've setup beds for you to sleep on, but they are on the WRONG side of the airport, so you can't get to them. Bleeding genius.

If you fail to find somewhere, i strongly recommend the kids jungle gym, it has a lovely soft floor!

I've never driven along that road (seen you emerge from it several times on weekday mornings in various cars, though), but it looks like it would be fun to do so in a RWD Volvo :)

Just found this photo on another website, dont know if its an old one or not but FFS.......

Had a skiddadle about in the Merc Wagon this pm, 52 plate C220CDI, bought cheap as 1001 'faults'.

Set of Trayal M&S tyres on it and a concrete bike park block in the back.

We've got about 4" here in Tonbridge, Kent.

Turned the ESP off* and drove up a steep switchbacked lane that runs at a right angle to Bidborough Ridge.

Case off keep it moving fast as poss and wheel twirling a go go and got to the top no probs at all.

Best bit was passing 3 "One Life Live It Let's Off Road!" winches etc festooned Landies on their way down, little toot and a wave a la Harry Enfield horse race sketch, rude not to

*switch takes it off 70% which is driveable, ON is useless and just gives no power at all.

Switching it off totally via getting into the master computer is errrrrrrr bests avoided - a friend told me. Ahem. Cough.

Hehe, fair enough... owning a Land Rover (and festooning it in toys) doesn't mean you can drive it properly.

Just been to Norwich and back in the Rover. The roads are utterly shit. I saw two snowploughs on the way back, but all they seemed to be doing was compacting the snow down. Even the main roads in Norwich were so slippery that changing down into second gear locked the front wheels up. I hope the gritters manage to get out during the night, or getting to work in the morning is going to be a right PITA.

On the plus side, on the 20 mile trip back I only got stuck behind two dithering twats - the second one was in a Volvo S80 and seemed to be taking the same route as me - 12mph through Norwich, then 12mph along a national speed limit A road. FFS. Getting past him was interesting - I think I might take the Stagea to work tomorrow.

The snow driving from Haverhill to Waterbeach in Cambs was a bit hairy. But the new Fiesta with its 155/13" tyres held well, stalling occasionally when catching second to brake the engine (Overcome by revving with the change).

Last night got my car stuck in mud on a back road (Letting someone pass); 3 RAC vans and one of their "Contractors" (Who was a 30 something lad with a Jeep Cherokee Auto V8 with stupid lift and 31" tyres who then ended up burying himself also - Hiliarious - Had to get a tractor in the end to rescue all FIVE!)

But it's been Okay. Bit worried about the morning when I come off shift in Waterbeach as the snow it still falling. Up to around 5" now :?

This I must share - new Mrs' neighbour has a cunning plan.

Drive up and down the shared drive, every morning, I shit you not, 5 or six times to compact the snow so people can get up and down the drive ok...

Hmmmm every tried curling with and Audi shaped broom?..........

I had thought she was winding me up, but no, this morning, popped out out, he drove up drive, then came back down, then went back up with a litttle wheel spin added to polish off any high spots.....

Posted

What twat decided this would be a good weekend for a jolly up in Amsterdam...

Still stuck here, smelling and watching people get more and more pissed, even if i do make it back the A12 is shut due to a crash.

That plan is almost genius. Our driveway was like that (it's a bit more of a track really). The neighbours and myself have been up and down the driveway a few times, and the compacted snow has iced up a treat. I went up the driveway with a shovel this afternoon and managed to lift huge sections of ice out at a time. Was very nice just tipping the ice out of the ruts - far less effort than trying to shovel the snow when it was fresh!

I'm guessing the folk you've described haven't done the 'remove the ice' bit though...

Posted

this is more of a track too, 'unsurfaced' being the technical term I believe.

Anyway, no ice removal in my case but a damn ingenius idea on your behalf!

Do you think I should suggest he boils water and pours and it up the track to melt the snow?

EDIT :Trigger go and shhmoke shum crayshee sheet and how you shay "chillout" No? Then go to she Shex Museum or Redlight District for shexy time.

A12 shut until tomorrow morning according to bbc news

Just got back to my in laws, not bad for a flight due to land at 6pm, the roads weren't amazing but the A12 was open, snows worse in Colchester then Southend though.

Wish i just stayed in a Amsterdam coffee shop now.

Got up the road to Helsby hill yesterday in the 306, despite some quite dodgy snow/corner/bottom of hills interfaces. A few behind me gave up (Astra Mk4, a Kia something and a couple of others) but going steady saw us up no problem.

Posted

That's how I got the ZX up the hills around here, 3k rpm in 2nd, nice bit of wheelspin, steering wheel at a 45 degree angle and up she went!

Until I hit the polished icy sections at the top, where I drove into the verge, up onto the grass and carried on regardless! Got a little scuff on the bumper now, it matches the massive on next to it from the previous owner!

Roads are OK in West Yorks today, despite lots of OMG SNO overnight...

Plenty of dithering mongs at the top of steep-ish hills though:

I overtook this lot, who were travelling at 0.00015 mph, at a reasonable 15-ish mph without skidding once:

Dug out TV2 this morning. Note the cut-out in the snow on The Volvo's roof, which I made for snowfall measurement proposes; it seems that the Southend area got three inches yesterday:

Once I got all of the snow off its body, I went for a brief drive around the area. All credit to Southend Borough Council, as all the main roads were clear of snow. I hate to think what they were like yesterday evening, though; in a way, I'm glad that I was in bed all weekend with a 'flu-like illness, as I would have had to have driven to work when the snowfall was at its heaviest.
