Usually free cars are hand-me downs from family members to help out someone when they're stuck for transport.

 

My cousin got a free Fiat Bravo when his Laguna's automatic gearbox packed up and was going to cost £2k to replace. It was a super car for him, except that the passenger seat sliding mechanism had no catch so you slid back and forth with the movement of the car

 

Once the clutch packed up he weighed it in, job jobbed.

 

Remember the free cars that you used to see on the parts for sale section of PC, years ago?

thanks for your humourous replys but i had a word with the fella nin the garage where it was being mot,d and they are letting me have the car back tomorrow as i have managed to scrape togehter half the cash to pay them for the work done 2 new tyres front pads and discs new screen (insurance claim not mine) and a couple of bulbs had a free brake check in halfords 3 weeks ago they quoted me £800 for the same parts plus labour so im sticking with the megane

Still, £385 for another 12 months is good - My K11 just rushed me £250 and next year it'll be more because the crossmember only passed this year by the skin of its teeth.

Tyres - you can see they were fooked even if you gave the barest legal monkey's and a cursory glance. How much less than 1.6mm were they??

Surprised you didn't just get a newer car cos it's £20 a month more but thats better than paying £800 in one lump.........

 

This is exactly why I got out of the motor trade!

The amount of times when presented with the equation of Need MOT( oh and service ) + £150 Budget = my answer of 'I have a spanner not a magic fucking wand'.

 

As someone's said even of you save £5 a week thats £260 a year pot to spend on your car. Pay due diligence to your tyres and you can shop around in your own time and get the best deal.

Exactly. Everything posted by him in this thread kind of goes against the Spirit of Autoshite. I feel for him because a lot of people get screwed over on stuff like this, but expecting tea, sympathy and a free car is a bit much!

Talking of paying someone to take your cars away, My dad paid £40 for his A reg toyota corrola saloon and renault 5 to be taken away for scrap. Don't think there was even anything wrong with the corrola apart from needing a battery, the renault had HG issues.

I have sympathy for bones - at the end of the day he was more likely to put his faith in a car that would have potentially being given away than a 7 year old megane.

 

The renault is at that funny age - if it shits itself it is potentially going over the bridge.

I did give my aunt's partner a free car - although he ended up giving me a bit of cash for it - a V reg Mondeo that had sat outside for about a year, albeit getting started up and washed every two months or so. I said if he paid for transporting it to his place he could have it, as I felt it was still a car that had a bit of life left in it, plus my dad didn't want any scrap boys visiting the farm. It didn't have any MOT though.

 

Recently the electrics have started playing up though, so I guess sitting outside through a Welsh winter didn't really do it much good .

I've given away a few cars and motorcycles, all in good working order and with at least 6 months T&T.

 

I gave them to people that genuinely needed a vehicle at that time, but didn't have the money to buy and insure one.

 

Not one of the people I gave to had asked, and they were shocked when I offered.

 

I occasionally wonder if the Escort, Lancia Delta, SS50 and Puch Maxi are still rolling, (I know the Ami and Mini City went over the bridge years ago due to terminal rot).

I once got given a J plated Sierra Estate (MOT failure with 8 months tax).... I had no space for it.. I got it a year's test, and discovered a workmate's Dad was in need of a car. His current Sierra hatch had expired, and they were due to go on holiday a week later. I suggested to my Wife that we give it to them. It had cost me about £70 to pay for the test and parts to fix it. She agreed, and we dropped it off that night. He ran it for 7 years. When he died, his Wife rang me to ask if I could collect it, and the hatch that had precipitated it's need. I also got given a Vectra petrol, and I collected an donated the lot to a local Deaf College for their Vehicle workshop. They were building a kit car, and needed a single vehicle donor. Good news all round. One car was donated three times, and did good, 7 years after it has passed the end of it's "usable" life. None of the people involved had ever been gifted a car before. I could have given them to the Fire Station , but decided they would do more good at the Deaf College.
