A Dying Breed -- Scrapyard content.

For the last couple of months James (MorrisOxide on the Blue forum/the chap with the Oxford Estate and Saloon) has been asking me if I want to go to a scrapyard he uses as its full of interesting old chod.

After a couple of false starts due to shocking weather, we finally managed to go for a poke about yesterday.

To say I was astounded by the place would be a huge understatement, I honestly didn't think that places like this existed anymore!

Anyway, I will chuck up all the pics and you guys can name/spot what you want.

Phew!

We were there for at least an hour, clambering and poking around, it really is a marvelous place.

Which got us thinking, would anybody be interested in a Saturday morning meet and convoy to this place to have a look around for themselves?

That Mazda looks in fairly good condition......

It is! Looks to have had a tap on the rear that has slightly deformed the rear quarters, and theres a few marks around it, but the interior is very tidy.

It was, at one time, knocking about on RR.

Great pictures. The problem with places like this is it's like visiting a dog pound, you want to take them all home with you.

Ace pictures of an ace place! This Avenger's been there since about 2003, the first time I went. It was for sale at the time as an "unfinished resto" - the piece of washing machine forming the inner sill repair under the driver's door was much whiter than it looks now!

A Saturday morning rummage would be tops, but can I suggest staggered arrival times, for obvious reasons?

I can sort of understand, although, I quite like the idea of filling their tiny carpark-esque bit with old chod. But yeah, we wouldn't want to scare the poor guy.

Brilliant stuff, just how all scrappies should be. I like the way the Riley looks in better nick than the Transit it's sat on too!

I mean turning up every 5 minutes or so, not at half-hour slots! So long as the other punters don't assume the carpark is an extension of the yard.

Ah, Balby...a few months ago my mate got a pair of good used wings, for the Farina Morris Oxford estate he is restoring for a client...it's now in the paint shop...

I am also 99.99% sure that the Wolseley Six peeking into this shot is this one that my mate sold to them a couple of weeks ago. He originally bought it for himself, needs some welding and the hydrospastics sorting, but time and client's cars meant it was taking up precious workshop space...he got rid of his 'golden grey' fergie resto as well...

Yep, that looks like the puppy does that 'Six' It was saggy on one side, but otherwise pretty darn tidy.

Like I said, I was most surprised, both by the cars that were there and the fact its 20/25mins drive from home and Ive never seen or heard of the place before.

Epic post, reminds me of clambering over all manner of stuff back in the 1980's.

Left handed surfing material sorted ? Check

If that is Balbys, they used to advertise fairly regularly in one of the weekly classic car papers.

I may have to pop down there sometime for a root around, it looks fan-dabbie-dozie. But agree with the dog pound comment, I am already looking at that landcrab......no shut up. Need to offload some other stuff first.

Tomorrow might be a bit difficult though as have lots to do on other cars.

I was going to have a go at organising a ride down for a couple of weekends time, maybe Saturday 22nd, or even the 29th. Either way, I sort a thread out this evening.

Also, Mr IMP, its the Leeds meet at Elland Road/B&Q tomorrow, just FYI

Wow great stuff.

Something fishy going on with some of these......

This is still showing as taxed.......

That Mazda 818 has only been in the yard since January 2011 too.

Well it's on SORN rather then taxed, I guess it's arrived during there after the SORN was first put in?

Have to say, these are crackin' piccys, thanks for putting them here.

Just realised it says SORN not due, does that mean it is SORN'd? Still a bit odd.

That makes sense. I was starting to think the yard had a bit of a side line in ringing.

Posted

Says SORN does that, probably been in there for long enough to have been pre-SORN and no-one has ever marked it as scrap...

The Mazda was locked up and parked down the middle of the yard, I was given the impression it's forsale as a whole car, along with a couple of others parked in the middle (The Wolseley Six was another)

Cool, keep me posted.

Should be able to get down there tomorrow. Will try and bring the Fulvia as it is on the road.

Oh wow, a 'proper' scrapyard. Time travel back to the 80's just happened :D

Posted

Sumptuous photomotography there. Looks like it's exceedingly satisfying to poke around there. I'd like to sit in some those swinging the steering wheel to and fro and making 'vroom' noises.

Posted

love that 2 tone 84 Carina....very nice indeed. Great pics, cheers for posting them up.

I used to love a good mooch around scrapyards. Sad git that I am, I used to spend many a Sunday afternoon salivating over 70's jap stuff, French crap & anything else interesting. Sadly most of these places have closed down due to the enviro / H&S pish. The best one round my way was Fallons Coatbridge. He was a robbing bastard who would never look you in the eye! The place was massive with a very tall wall of cubed cars keeping the tea leafs out. If you wanted it, he had it.

It was my Lada owning stint that got me into scrappies!!!

Happy memories.

As they said - GR9 pics of a GR9 place. Do they just let you in for a wander around?

I'd like to live in the houses at the back - what a landscape view :D

Looking at those pics makes you realise just how identifiable older cars used to be. I bet in 20 - 30 years time, it'll be bloody hard to distinguish the cars.
