This is all very hypothetical as i doubt I'll go through with it but a guy i know locally has acquired this little MG Metro.

Sorry for the rubbish photos, The cars a local car from new and with only 27000 miles on the clock, it's a bit tatty but better then a 29 year old metro has any right to be, The bottom of one of the wings is missing and the paints faded and the interior although complete is a bit tatty.

It's been sat in the blokes driveway for 9-10 months now whilst he decides what to do with it but he told me last weekend that if anyone wants it they can have it for £1000, It has got MOT and he's pumped the suspension back up again so it is usable.

Say it needs £200-300 spent on doing it up (I doubt it does though) and a bloody good valet and the interior has crap everywhere, would it be worth the hassle, I don't want it so all I'd do is sell it on if i did pay the £1000 for it.

Either that or if anyone else is seriously interested in it i could pass the number on.

Trigger, that ain't a misnomer. These are future Gold. Buy it or be forever laughed at for missing the profit boat.

It's not worth a grand, surely?

+1

But about £600 worth.

To me, it's £500 unless I'm missing something, hence why I haven't "saved" it, But like Alberto says, there a good chance of these going up in value pretty soon.

Shame about the newer one, it looks decent. Tell me it's hopelessly rotten underneath.

Not worth 1000 - so it'll end up rusting away on his garden until he realises no-one wants it at that price and weighs it in. :(

I'd love it as it has the same hue and wheels as my first (road legal  ) car. Couldn't part with a bag for one mind, especially as I sold the last pair for £50.

The MG's never worth a grand in a month of Sundays and the Metro he's breaking looks as good as new. This guy sounds like a total and unmitigated penis.

Sadly I must agree entirely. What a cock.

It might be a Mk 1 MG, but it aint worth a bag o' sand.

£500 - £600 tops on a good day with a following wind.

The other one sans donkey maybe £200.

Never worth a grand, however the fact it is a very early MG makes me suspect somebody somewhere may pay over the odds for it.

It's possible that early MG Metros will go up in value but I don't think it's any time soon.

I still can't believe the prices that Mini Clubmans go for compared to 5 years ago, it's possible that Metros will go the same way.

All of the above. I like Metros, especially early ones and the MG version. Sadly they have about the same second hand value as a fly encrusted white dog turd. For the car that saved AR that's a real shame IMHO.

Just as i suspected, I think I'll let it rust away in his drive way then, I must say if it was something of myore interest I would have soon found the grand for it.

Compared to a few years ago Metro prices have risen, and the Metro club in particular has played a big part in raising it's profile with attendance at events and media coverage. Hopefully values won't ever be on a par with Minis as they're just stupidly expensive, but it's good if they get to a point where mint ones are beyond your average engine plunderer. What always gets me is people bang on about the MGs, but I'd much rather see values of the base models and VDPs increase otherwise they'll be the ones that disappear.

As to this one, I'd say around £700 if it's solid and maybe a bit more if it's an early '82 build. Prices tend to be stronger for the mk1s whereas you do get a bit of fluctuation for the later mk2 MGs (personally I prefer the look of the early ones).

Why don't you make him a lower offer instead? It's not like it's a complete shitheap- it's got to be worth 600-700 notes.

He said he won't take any lower then a grand for it, I offered £500 but he said the price is £1000 fixed, he's sooner it just sat there then sell it cheaper. That's old people for you.

So, in this thread, 2 easily saveable 1300 Metros are doomed, one by engine bummerey and one by being over valued and left to rot.

Superb.

I bet he'll come back to you in 2 years when it's rotten and offer it to you for £950.

The sad fact is that if he holds on to it for a bit, it will be worth his asking. Give it a couple of years and if it hasn't entirely dissolved, he might be on the money.

There's a chap (a Mini specialist) selling a Triumph 2000 on Ebay at the moment. In the background is another lovely looking lowly-spec Metro being engine raped. Really fucks me off.

We can only hope that one day Metros become so rare that people start buying Minis as engine donors. Wishful thinking but we can dream.

Euromillions plan #29

Manufacture a load of very high quality 1275cc A-series clones and flood the market with them.

I think Metro's like this are probably worth a grand if you want a Metro, I think there is no guarantee you could sell it on for the same price or even a profit, but you might be lucky and find the one person who has that much to spend and wants it that much.

A mate bought a 1.0 City 5dr Mk2 on a B reg last year - initially went to look at it for the engine for his Mini! But it was the proverbial old lady's car - looked like it was 2/3 years old and we had travelled back to 1988. I'd not realised how scarce A-Series engines were as I thought he was mental looking at a £500+ car for a 998 engine, but its probably a sign of how the price of Minis etc have increased since I last had one 10 years ago.

Anyway he bought it just because it was so immaculate and was going to use it as his daily, but he does a fair few miles and suspected if it was pressed into high mileage daily service it would probably fall apart within 6 months! A garage is now trying to sell if for £1395 - they also has at least one car (Aggro) that someone on here used to have I think. I think this garage has a plan if they keeps the cars long enough they will eventually be worth what he wants for them. If you really want a B reg Metro then it is worth £1400 but to the rest of us its worth £500 as that what you could sell for without waiting for the right buyer.

Nobody wants Metro's and people need engines for their Mini's. You cant blame the people for doing it if its the simplest/cheapest way of getting them. You will probably get most of your money back by weighing in the Metro afterwards. Whilst it is a shame to ruin a perfectly good car it makes perfect sense sadly.
