Hyundai redneck pickup

I was driving through the glamourous Wiltshire village of Crudwell yesterday and stumbled across this glorious automotive achievement. A cold call, some lengthy doorstep negotiation and a trip Lloyds TSB later and it was mine.

I've spent a lovely morning scraping scunge off it. Results:

I think it's the prettiest car I've ever owned... Giorgetto Giugiaro loveliness with just the right amount of South Korean adulteration. I'm also very taken with the dashboard, which has buttons for features that don't exist - including air-con. It also has a sundial.

And having driven it in the rain yesterday, I can confirm that it is indeed Retro Drift Cool.

That looks unbelievably ace. They are super well proportioned those things. Give you a race!

What a lovely old tub! Never thought I'd ever see one of these in such good nick!

Are these the ones that are basically a mk5 cortina underneath?

Posted

Bloody hell I thought these had all rotted to buggery. Where do you find these things?!

Is that an all vinyl floor? Luxury.

Was it you who got the Moskvich van too? Any updates?

Cor, that is one very, very tidy pickup. That looks almost mint inside and the rest of it looks pretty much unscathed apart from that annoying dent on the tailgate. You really have to get that sorted and you would then have a potential show winner methinks. Top find, especially as it was 'as you were passing'. Fab!

Absolutely magic, can't believe how tidy it is too.

Wow, what a honey. Had one years ago we called the chicken chaser and yep they're rather tail happy!

Seem to recall mine had Ford wheels on it but they rust like crazy so waxoyl it to the hilt.

Lovely useful thing.

Terrific find, and I too would have wanted it at first sight!

Love these Pony pick-ups, easily the best thing Hyundai have made.

I would love one to just tootle about in 8)

Last one I ever saw round our way was at the long gone 'Caistor salvage' - it was very rusty, but was used to haul the gas axing gear around the yard.

I was in a yard (Alloa Auto Breakers) during the week and they're using a Rover 400-shape Honda Civic estate to haul the tools and gas axe about. Quite bizarre.

Anyway, top buy Sam, it looks absolutely bloody miserable. This is the only one I ever recall seeing, not sure if it still lives...

Top work Sam! We NEED to see this in PC at every opportunity!

I love the very idea of a preserved or restored van/pickup. They lead short hard lives and are ruthlessly thrown away at the end, so seeing any survive is totally grin-worthy.

Have a Cypriot contribution....

Air con must have been a very expensive factory option!

That looks fantastic Sam and well photographed too, I can't believe how tidy it is, there's a burgundy F reg one locally with big front spot lights i often see but yet to photograph.

'Kin 'ell! That looks (almost) factory fresh

The all blue vinyl flooring reminds me of one of those 80s childrens soft play areas.

Now vinyl floor coverings is a WINNA in the floor mats game, particularly in a pick up 8)

Now that is very, very sweet.......saw one hiding in a barn in an episode of the Hairy bikers last year......did ratDat not have one as well? if you decide to sell it any time, give me a PM, I'll have it....please

Top find! I haven't seen on of those for at least a decade. Old Tom McWilliams from Cable Road Garage in Whitehead had a red one which was totally hanging, and that was 15 odd years ago.

That's a brilliant save, nice one. Last one I saw belonged to Ratdat and that needed a fair old weldathon to get it something like.

Ace.

That looks brilliant, and I am genuinely amazed that it survives.

My grandfather had one from new in 1984 until about 1995. It was already epically rusty by the early 1990s, and there's a picture of me below helping my grandfather paint over the rust with bitumen!

Yes - that is a blue vinyl floor, with wipe-clean functionality. Ideal for murdering and other hobbies that involve fluids.

What I've skirted around in these photographs is alarming localised rust around both rear wheel-arches. To avoid this plunging into the turgid depths of my 'to do' list, I may simply throw cash at the problem.

And phwooorrr... your saloon is highly erotic, Mr Bo11ox.

I like the Mk I three-door even more... extremely sharp. It's what the Morris Ital should have looked like:

And here's a hot sport version. I love the conflict between the spoiler and the 1200TL badge:
