Excellent - thanks a lot!

I was just searching for 'Simca 1301' and 'Simca 1501' cos I have no idea what a wheel trim or centre cap is.

Do you need a seperate account for French Ebay?

I'd have those 30 Euro ones, just need to work out how to ask whether they'd post to England and how much it would cost...

Epic. Just epic.

By the way there's a right Simca nut in the local garage which does all my servicing work. Here's a pic I took recently of his 1501 on the road, believe he has a 1000 as well

Right...

I've been using the Simca this week, and the first problem is predictably to do with the gear selection process...

It now won't go into first or reverse without a load of crunching and general effort, the other gears are 'stiff' but not as bad, no crunching etc.

Any suggestions?

Posted

Well I would do a gear oil change for starters and lube up the linkages. That should help a lot

Posted

I'd almost forgotten about these cars, what an elegant looking car, very nicely proportioned. Great read too, cheers. :D

Posted

Aye, sounds like it could be gear linkage issues, my mates Ford Taunus was the same, although his problem wasn't helped by having the wrong clutch fitted as well.

Posted

Crunching gears could be a clutch issue. Is it easy to select the various gears with the engine turned off? Might just need a bit of adjustment. Column gearchanges are almost never dreadful in my experience (Tatras being the exception from the rule - a tiny stalk linked to a rear-mounted gearbox. Horrific!) but an iffy clutch will make a crunch-free change near impossible.

Is it a hydraulic clutch or cable?

EDIT - oh and obviously well done for buying it! An amazingly cool car and a great write up.

Posted

As above,

Difficulty selecting 1st and Reverse generally denote a mal-adjusted or worn clutch (a weak pressure plate). If it's a cable, it may just need tightening a couple of turns, if it's hydralic - there's not a lot you can do. Where is the clutch biting point on the pedal?

Posted

Biting point is right down on the floor pretty much.

It's hydraulic and a quick inspection today suggests a leaking slave cylinder could be the cause...

Posted

Top it up, pump furiously, pedal will rise (for a little while) & gears restored.

A dodgy slave is quite common on a laid up car- and about the easiest/cheapest part of the sytem to replace. Fairly simple repair- lucky chap!

Speedy Spares -just down the road from you in Portslade,-will have a repair kit, maybe even the cylinder.

Aah yes, I'd forgotten about them, I'll give them a try.

This seems to be the correct one

but the seller's away til the 19th.

Dunno if the top up/pump temporary fix method will work, as it's leaking to the point that there's a pool of fluid under it, but worth a try... also annoyingly it's right down at the bottom of the engine so only accessible from underneath really (and I don't have any axe stands/ramps or even a decent jack down here)

... And the best part is, I don't have to worry where I'm going to find a replacement brake master cylinder for a 1967 Simca 1301 that I need to get me to work on Monday....

Just call me Freddie Foreshadowing. Okay, it's the clutch not the brakes but I was close... Hope it gets sorted soon. As usual, the offer of some drive space/ another pair of hands is open!

Posted

The master cyinder reservoir thing is already full, and pumping seems to make no difference.

Posted

Too late then. Its either pissing on the floor (-the cylinder reservoir will be noticeably emptying) or its got an airlock. Try wedging the pedal down overnight- there is a slim chance the rubbers will reassert, swell slightly & function. Tis but a slim chance.

Too replace, find a kerb, its not a tough job. Slightly loosen the flexy first, before you undo the 2 fixing bolts. If the replacement doesnt come with a bleed nipple, loosen the existing -if you can, prior to anything else. (It'll be at the top -so hardest to reach)

Once the 2 bolts are out -you can wind the slave off the flexi -saving the copper washer(s). All the fluid will run down your arm now -unless you thoughtfully fitted the master cylinder cap with a plastic bag -the suction will diminish the flow.

Fitment will be the reverse of the above. Time elapsed 15 mins.

Bon chance, mon ami.

Must be airlocked then - there is a pool of fluid under the slave cylinder but the level in the reservoir doesn't seem to be changing.

Thanks for the instructions, I'll give it a go - if I can get hold of one! (Speedy spares helpfully shut at 1 on Saturdays)

Don't forget to wash the brake fluid off the bodywork. Hmmmm. Corrosive! This is why I prefer LHM.

Another nod for Speedy Spares.

I am! Unfortunately it's the 'reader's wives' section of Old Skool Ford magazine wearing a cheap wig and some bright red lippy. Even taking into account my voluminous facial hair I'm still better looking than 99% of the birds in there.

Not necessarily - I've driven one that was perfect because all the linkages were adjusted correctly. But there are lots of linkages and most people don't bother, I know I didn't. Column changes are ace, when you get back in a normal car you'll make at least one gearchange reaching for the wiper stalk :D

Good write up, and what Mr Bickle said about finding a kerb to work on. Sometimes carparks have high kerbs so you'll just have to look around. Keep driving everywhere slowly looking at the pavement and when the police stop you, tell them you're kerb crawling.

The new slave cylinder's arrived this week (hopefully it's the right one) so we'll be attempting to fit it this afternoon. Should be 'fun'.
