No classic car fan would gratuitously trash the amount of stuff that those c***s have

TBH I bet most classic car fans would happily crush their own cars for a slice of the money those three get.

What makes me angry though is that they seem to trash rare stuff just for the sake of it. Most of the goons who watch Top Gear don't know one old car from another, so if you want to smash something into a wall / drive something off a cliff / fill something with water / etc, why not do it with a something that's 10 year's old and common as muck, instead of with something that's 30/40/50 years old and very scarce?

For example, have 99 per cent of the Top Gear audience ever driven a Marina? Or a Princess? or an Alpine A610? No, so what exactly are they finding so entertaining about the wrecking of those particular cars? It's just the BBC indulging three public school boys and their in-jokes. Wankers.

Lets be honest though, how many classic car fans have ruined or destroyed cars? No not by dropping a piano on them but by carrying out "restorations" or "improvements" where the enthusiasm outweighs the ability. Or buy a car and leave it to fall apart on the driveway for years. At least the TG cars go out in style and they have destroyed plenty of newer stuff as well

Aye, but how many have destroyed them on national television at our (licence payer's) expense in a sort of 'stick two fingers up' manner? Can take or leave T.G but it's a bit shit these days and the stage managed 'comedy' moments are mostly anything but funny.

I'm with Wilco on this one, find some ten year old tat to piss about with, ideally something that's heading for scrap anyhow.

Erm, can you guys please give me a list of the classic/interesting cars they've destroyed on our TV screens this past series please.

Not this series, I'm afraid, as I gave up subjecting myself to it a while back. But RedSparrow's list above brings back some painful memories.

I agree, and similarly you could argue that lots more have been destroyed by retarded pikies on banger tracks. But two wrongs don't make a right!

Time for some proportion here, I feel.

TG destroyed 4 Marinas...out of more than 807,000 originally produced for the UK market. Hardly a mass cull now, is it??

To be honest i enjoy watching it, James May i think is a great presenter, and holds it together with a bit of reserved sense. Most of the cars they have destroyed were shagged out scrappers anyway id wager, clinging onto MOT's by a thread...

We had it on because my 16 year old nephew was visiting, he laughed throughout while we grimaced in pain

Soz, meant 928!

I wish they would come up with a better way of identifying models.

I still watch the show, but is does sadden me a bit when they trash a car I like, but what can ya do eh?

How can they compare that BMW 1M to the original Golf GTi?, they couldn't be much further away if they tried!

forty flipping grand for a 'family saloon' hey folks, the real world is this way!

Several Volvos, including a 760 saloon, a 940 LPT estate and a 240GL estate. The consolation is that the 760's steering wheel broke Clarkson's thumb when he drove the car through a wall at 40mph

using a bank of england inflation calculator a Mk1 Golf GTi in todays money would be £25,200.

Posted

Which is still £15k less them the BMW, and the BMW is RWD, not a hot hatch and slightly more powerful them the Golf.

Yeah, but it is lovely though. One to order perhaps when the mother in law finally pops her clogs.

Yes I was grinning about the mention of the Fuego Turbo.

I don't like BMWs but I was impressed with that...1 M 2 door car.

Me too!

I thought it was pretty good tonight. Loved the E type feature and the clips of the old Minis. Even Mrs P and her mate came in to see Alice Cooper 8)

Err-I own 2 Fuego turbos (but one is french registered).

No -they cant have either.

And does putting Fuego turbo running gear in an 18 estate too, count?

I thought Mr Cooper was a great advert for the dental industry

I think Clarkson's point was that the Golf GTi was a landmark car because it sort of did everything small sportscars of the time did (Spitfire, MG Midget, etc.), whilst still being a practical 3 door hatch with four seats. In a similar way, the Beemer now does the same to cars like the Cayman and Evora, whilst being cheaper than them. Basically, all the performance, and none of the practicality drawbacks.

I think. He didn't make it too clear. I guess his point was that the Beemer had the potential to be seen as a game changer, in the same way as a Golf GTi. Not that it was a modern day Golf GTi.

I think. Possibly.

His main point seemed to by, why buy those, when this can do all that they can do, but for less dosh, and more practicality. Anyway, UK is only getting a few, and apparently they're pretty much sold out. Although I've never been an E type fan, his gist of "what have we built that's been as good since" does have merit.........apart, obviously, from the Austin Ambasador
