1982 1750cc Maxi project FOR SALE.

Due to a bereavement and other things in my life I feel I will never get the chance to do this Maxi justice and get it back on the road. I obtained it just to prevent it being scrapped really. It has been stood outside a number of years but bodily is in fair condition. It will need a pair of sills, or atleast an extensive repair, plus repairs to the front panel and wings, although they could be fibreglassed. Door bottoms are a bit moth eaten. Apart from that it will need the odd patch underneath and under the bonnet, but overall the body is pretty good for what it is. Rear arches and the floors are mint, as is the tailgate and front screen surround, it would be an easy project for someone who is half handy with a welder. Its not nearly as rusty as many other Maxis and from what I have seen it has never been welded in the past and has never been bodged with filler.

I have had the engine running and it seems good.

All the hydraulics need an overhaul, plus the exhaust is shot thanks to the amount of time the car had stood but the hydragas is in good order. 3 part worn tyres have been fitted to replace the perished originals. The interior is shonky but will benefit from a very good clean. Unfortunately the previous owner had lost the keys so it will need a lock set BUT I have done a deal with a banger driver in Nottingham who is picking up a scrap maxi for racing in a week or so , things like locks, interior and trim can be obtained from him FOC and should really help anyone restoring this old bus. If it hasn't sold by the time he picks up his scrap maxi I will go over and strip it myself and this maxi will come with the extra parts.

There are lots of other things that will need attention but its best for anyone interested to come over and have a look at it to satisfy themselves that it's what they want.

I have access to a pair of fibreglass wings and a drivers sill but these were donated by The Organist of this parish, and seeing as I won't be using them I think it's only fair I return them to him. i'm sure they will be available through seperate negotiation.

£150 ONO, Stoke on Trent- to a good home only!

BUMP surely this must be right up someones street? Where is that guy who rescued a Polonez from a scrapyard when you need him? :)

Posted

You can leave the wings and the sill with the car if you want Tim, unless whoever has it off you really does not want them.

I may have a lock set with my batch of spares!

Too far...if it was still near newport I'd have bitten your hand off.

Bugger, spent my last couple of hundred quid a couple of weeks back :( What a fab car. I'd love a Maxi and the bodywork wouldn't faze me either. Arsebiscuits.

I'll defo have thi..... Oh hang on my monthly direct debit to the UGANDAN SINGLE PARENT LESBIAN COMMUNIST DONKEY SANCTUARY OF OLD LONDON TOWN has just gone out, can you hold onto it for 2 years?

If I could weld I would take it on but I can't and I still don't have mine MOT'd yet and I can't possibly park two tatty Maxis on the drive! I think the neighbours are getting fed up with seeing one, plus my tatty R14!

Hope someone does take it on though.

If you weren't so far away and if I had the cash and if I had the space and if I could sell mine first and my Misus would let me I'd have it in a flash.

Honist.

£165/ton at the moment. But there's always a free ad on Retrorides!

I could weigh it in myself and pocket the money but the reason I picked it up in the first place was to prevent it being scrapped. I just want it to go to someone who will do something with it.

Tim, I think the previous posts have been in jest, regqarding the propensity to post up about how if it was closer/the wife wouldn't divorce me/I had space etc., so don't take it the wrong way. There are many on here who would love to be able to help on this occasion if we had the space, but we don't. I'm sorry about that.

Its ok, most of the lacquer has gone so its more like primer grey.

I am already not doing enough work on all the cars I already have and for that reason I'm oot.

Sure it will find a good home.

My brother and I were trying to figure out how to rescue this one ourselves, but we're stretched thin as it is with the two we're working on and have nowhere to put it, sadly. As always with cars of interest to us, we'll put the word out with those we know and if something comes up we'll send them over this way for you.

I'm working on a plan, I have a space allowance but need tranportation to west/north yorkshire - shipley quotes to be got soon.

Posted

£111 is the cheapest Shipley quote so far.

It's farmer's market this weekend, anyone with an a-frame/trailer fancy a buffalo burger for lunch?

I can't do this weekend, but if it helps, the Heep's draggin' services are available.

Bit of a thread hi-jack, but I can't find the Stupid Question one & it's about Maxi's & it gives it a bump...

Maxi = shit gear change

My Scirocco developed an action that was very similar to that of a Maxi

Select 2nd first if you want 1st

a disappearing 5th

& a propensity to baulk 2nd changing up at low speed.

But with some new/improved bush things & a replacement ball at the bottom of the stick

have transformed it to the slickest of slick things.

My question is; is it possible to update/upgrade/refine a Maxi gearbox in a similar manner?

Posted

I think they made a bit too much fuss about the gear change (IMHO)!!

The only problem I noticed with the two Maxi's I have had was an occassional disinclination to go into first, never had a problem with the other gears and can't say the change is particularly bulky. It is certainly not the smoothest but was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting from road tests, pub talk and the internet in general!!

Early Maxis were pretty dreadful by all accounts, but they soon sorted it. It was never brilliant, but the Maxi I drove (a very late one) was no problem.

I learn to drive in my parents cars - a '66 Morris 1000 & a '75 Maxi HL

The 1000 was replaced by a '75 Datsun 100a.

The driving instructor had a Mk2 Escort 1100.

I appreciate that everything is relative, but that Maxi had a heavyweight 'Wrestler' box.

Gearchange was probably the best thing about my 78 Maxi, but that doesn't say much! I think the problem was, the earliest ones had cables rather than rods, which made finding a gear a matter of luck (secondhand info). I believe this arrangement lasted no more than the first year or two, so Tim's Maxi being a very late one should work as well as can be expected. Good luck re-homing it, Tim.

All 1750's were rod change as were the 1500 'wooden dash' cars from late 1970. It was the early plastic dash Maxis with the cable change box.

The rod change gearbox is alright as long as you don't rush it.
